Pi Phi Chapter
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Mighty Sixth District
3301 Statesville Avenue
Charlotte, NC 28206
To the Mighty Sixth District
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the 41st Basileus of the Pi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am excited to present a summary of activities of our
chapter for the previous year. This scrapbook is all about Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, highlighting the
best of what we do as Brothers. As we pause to reflect on all that was accomplished during the
previous year we are once again energized to accomplish great things over the next 12 months. Last
year Pi Phi Brothers played a vital part in delivering an outstanding year of programs, community
service, and Brotherhood in the Charlotte area. Pi Phi continues to thrive in the community, the
District and the Fraternity leveraging the collective voice of Omegas in Charlotte!
Here are some of the highlights of the Pi Phi Year in Review:
Once again held the largest African American Blood Drive in the Carolinas
Provided over $14,000 in scholarships and charitable contributions
Partnered with the Deltas on a historic three day Habitat for Humanity Build
“Survived” outside of the Frat House for 4 months when it was under renovation
Supported and helped to elect Bro. Mayor Patrick Cannon into office
Supported the campaign to elect Bro. Antonio Knox to the office of Grand Basileus
Celebrated the 15th year of Comedy @ the Frat house
Welcomed into Omega 18 Brothers, the largest line we have had in over 10 years
Launched Pi Phi University as a way to educate and give back to Brothers
We even competed in a Step Show!
Throughout all of our activities I must also acknowledge our loss of 6 sturdy trees in Omegas
forest. These Brothers served their community and fraternity well and will be missed…
The Brothers of Pi Phi Chapter are committed to the community, upholding our four Cardinal
Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift in all that we do. I wish to thank our
chapter brothers for humbly serving our community in the name of Omega. Our chapter is full of
heroes who continue to work for our success each year. It is truly a pleasure to work with men who
serve for the good of Omega.
God bless Pi Phi Chapter, the Mighty Sixth District, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Fraternally Yours,
Joachim Rogers

The Brothers of Pi Phi chapter kicked off Achievement
Week with a Rededication Ceremony on November 10, 2013.
Brothers were led in a formal ceremony of recommitment
to their fraternal oath. The ceremony was followed by the
singing of Omega Dear and a fellowship dinner.
Achievement Week Activities continued on Monday,
November 11 with Pi Phi’s annual Veteran’s Day Program,
which was themed, “A salute to Pi Phi Chapter Military
Veterans.” Activities began with the posting of colors by
an honor guard comprised mostly of active duty fraternity
members from the U.S. Marine Corps. The event commenced
with a viewing of the national presentation of the history
of Omegas in the military and continued with the
acknowledgement of the 42 living Pi Phi Military Veterans.
The event concluded with the presentation of a plaque
recognizing Pi Phi veterans that will be permanently and
prominently displayed at the Omegas of Charlotte
fraternity house.
On Tuesday evening, November 12, Pi Phi hosted a
“Historical and Ritualistic Workshop.” The workshop
invited brothers to learn and then dialogue about topics
relating to fraternity ceremonies and traditions and the
impact biblical and classical literature had on their
origins.
On Wednesday, Pi Phi kicked off its annual Achievement
Week Service Project. The chapter again chose to support
the Second Harvest Food Bank by sponsoring a food drive.
The brothers collected over 300 pounds of food that will
be used to fight hunger in the Charlotte region.
At noon, on Thursday, November 14, Pi Phi’s Annual
Brotherhood Luncheon was held. Over 50 brothers
convened at the frat house for barbeque and fellowship in
honor of Achievement Week.
Pi Phi’s Achievement Week Banquet was held on Saturday,
November 16 at the Crown Plaza Executive Park Hotel in
Charlotte. Over 175 brothers and guests attended this
black-tie affair. The evening included a reception, viewing
of a presentation covering Pi Phi’s activities and
accomplishments over the year, a performance by Pi Phi’s
2013 Talent Hunt runner up, Elizabeth Burgos, a reading by
Pi Phi’s local winner of the 2013 International Essay
Contest, Zaria Livingston, and musical selections from the
Pi Phi Ensemble. The highlight of the evening was the
presentation of the chapter Achievement Awards for 2013.
Award winners were:
Omega Man of the Year – Bro. Kipling “Kip” Wilson
Superior Service – Bro. James Gaither
Founders Award – Bro. Kenneth “Tito” Koonce
Citizen of the Year – Bro. Herb Gray
The evening concluded with remarks by Pi Phi Basileus
Joachim Rogers and the singing of “Omega Dear.”
Pi Phi’s Achievement Week concluded with church service
on Sunday morning, November 17. Rev. Bro. Dr. Michael
McLean, hosted the brothers at East Stonewall AME Zion
Church in Charlotte, where he is the senior pastor. The Pi
Phi Ensemble provided musical selections during the
service. After an inspiring message from Brother McLean,
the church hosted the brothers and their families to
repast in their Family Life Center. Brothers and guests
enjoyed additional musical selections by The Ensemble.

The Pi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity
Inc. has a proud tradition of promoting and
supporting their Cardinal Principle of
Scholarship. The Scholarship committee is
charged with soliciting and encouraging high
school and college aged youth within the
Greater Charlotte Area to apply for one of the
six (6) scholarships offered by Pi Phi Chapter.
This year the committee was proud to receive 46
applicants for the various schools and
community organizations in the Charlotte area.
After all applicant packets were received, they
were read, evaluated and scored according to a
rubric designed to assess financial need,
scholarship and community involvement. Each
applicant that applied was worthy and it is with
great regret that the committee cannot award
scholarships to each and every one of these
worthy students.
The final six students were very worthy
recipients and we are so very proud to announce
the Scholarship recipients; Jalen Ryant and
Ja’Lynn Gray of Phillip O' Berry Academy, Itane’
Coleman of Harding University High, Gabon
Williams of West Charlotte High, Angela Pak of
Butler High and Keyonte Easter of William A.
Hough High.
The Scholarship Committee, our Basileus
Joachim Rogers for his guidance and support,
the Executive Board, the Brothers of Pi Phi
Chapter, all School and Community
Organizations and all participants who helped
make this year a very successful year.

Toys being bagged for Angel Tree
Toy Drive
Cars lined up and ready to deliver
toys Toys at drop-off location
Bikes are among the donations
The Brothers of Pi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi reached its goal for this years Angel Tree campaign. The brothers’
mission? Fulfill the dreams of 100 Charlotte kids, through the Salvation Army’s Christmas Bureau. That program
provides struggling parents with gifts for their children, paid for in part with money donated to the Observer’s Empty
Stocking Fund. The fraternity comprises about 250 members, all college graduates, working in an array of fields but
all committed to service and social responsibility.
Dino Miller has organized the chapter’s Angel Tree drive since 2001, he said, when they took on about 20 kids to buy
for. That number began to grow, eventually hitting 50 by 2009. As the national fraternity – which counts Mayor Pat
Cannon and Police Chief Rodney Monroe among its members locally – neared its centennial in 2011, Miller
approached the membership at the November 2010 chapter meeting. We should double it to 100, he said, to celebrate
our 100 years. But “the brothers are very willing to go for stretch goals,” said Miller. Joachim Rogers, chapter
basileus (president, essentially), said the group particularly likes knowing gifts go to children who live near their
north Charlotte fraternity house: “A lot of the toys stay right in that area.”
Once the brothers had gotten their gifts organized – supplementing with last-minute purchases (“Look! This
skateboard has a carrying case and everything!”), then bagging and tagging and loading them into four SUVs, a little
pickup and two cars – a cadre of the men caravaned to the south Charlotte Christmas Bureau. They waited a few
minutes in the cold to meet bureau coordinator Lindsay Duncan, then carted everything in.
Duncan loves these guys, all clad in fraternity purple and gold : satin jackets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, jerseys, each with
the knight and swords and lamp of their crest. “You’re a memorable group!” she told them. “You let us put faces to
names.”
Miller held up his phone to show the panorama photograph he’d taken three weeks earlier, when the place was
cavernously empty. Then he took a new one, this one of the space filling up with hundreds and hundreds of bags of
gifts waiting for more than 12,000 needy kids, seniors and families. “What we’re doing is just a small contribution, part
of a whole community, trying to do something for the whole community.”

Pi Phi Chapter partners with the American Diabetes Association, who is
dedicated to changing the future of diabetes by promoting awareness
and raising moneys for research. Our ultimate goal is to do our part
to stop diabetes once and for all. This year we participated in the
Walk for Diabetes and raised dollars through pledges for the
walkers.
North Carolinians are increasingly feeling the effects of diabetes as
thousands of people suffer from the disease, and many others may
have diabetes and not know it! It is estimated that one out of every
three children born after 2000 in the United States will be directly
affected by diabetes. In the Charlotte Metro area, roughly 160,000
people have diabetes.
That is why Pi Phi Chapter is committed to supporting the efforts of
the American Diabetes Association's Charlotte office in educating the
public about how to stop diabetes and support those living with the
disease.

2013 Event with a monetary donation
and volunteers. This is an initiative of
the U.S. Department of Housing and

strengthen the bond between children
and their fathers, who are often absent
n the lives of their children who live in
public housing. Statistics show that
when fathers are absent children
suffer in a variety of ways, including a
higher tendency dropping out of school
before graduation. CHA, with the
support of Pi Phi and other community
organizations celebrated fathers who
are present in their children’s lives and
offered resources that may help absent
fathers reconnect with their children

Basileus Joe Rogers launched the
“Pay it Forward” Program for
Pi Phi Brothers at the start of 2014.
Here is How it Works
1. Brothers are asked to be attentive
wherever they are for opportunities to
help another Brother or his family
2. They can assist or just do something nice
for a Brother and if the Brother wants to
"repay" (that is, pay it "back"), let them
know that what they would really like is
for them to Pay it “Forward”
3. In addition when a brother notices that
somebody has done something nice for
them, they make a note in their mind to
practice three acts of kindness towards
other Brothers, as described above.
4. Finally they document the act by submitting
either by email, or dropping it in the “Pay It
Forward” Box to be read anonymously at
Chapter meetings.
THE CONCEPT
WHY DO IT?
Promotes Brotherhood by
highlighting good deeds already
being done by Brothers
Turns our focus away from
ourselves
Centered around giving rather
than taking
Helps us to remember that we are
FRIENDS first

Construction Scenes at the Frat House during
Renovation
For the first time since
the Frat hous e was
opened it was forced to
close for an extended
period of time. Due to a
leak in the roof, repairs
were necessary to make
t h e F r a t h o u s e
habitable. During this
time Brothers opted to
make improvements on
the house as well with a
f u l l m a k e o v e r .
From the months of
F e b r u a r y t o J u n e
Brothers were forced
to “Survive” outside of
the Frat House. It was a
challenge as Brothers
h a v e b e c o m e
accustomed to meeting
and socializing there.
Thanks to a partnership
with the Urban League
of Central Carolinas
and the generosity and
f l e x i b i l i t y o f t h e
Brothers we made it
work with out losing
pace on our activities.
The Frat House opened
just in time for our
Annual Blood Drive and
Chapter Cookout and is
now one of the top
Fraternal facilities.
