Message from the Principal:

We have now completed the second quarter and are half way through this school year. A copy of the third quarter schedule is included in this Chalk Talk.

Report cards were sent home on Tuesday, January 31st in the students’ backpacks. Attendance and effort awards were also sent home. Parents, please discuss your child’s progress with him/her. Report cards should stay at home. However, please sign the report card envelopes and return it to your child’s teacher. Although we do not have parent-teacher conferences at this time, teachers will gladly meet with parents and answer questions you may have about your child’s progress.

Outside in Winter: It is very important that all students come to school with the correct clothing in cold weather. Unless the temperature is less than 20 degrees, students are expected go outside for recess. They all either walk home or wait outside for their rides. A student who wears the correct clothing for Cleveland’s winter weather is much more comfortable in school and warmer for their trip home.

Important Reminder: It is necessary that all drivers follow our system as well as observe legal and safe driving practices. The Lakewood Police will monitor the traffic around the schools and enforce the law. The following is a short summary of the safest procedures for all students and drivers.

1. If possible, students should walk to and from school. 2. Unless drivers park their vehicles in legal parking places and walk their student to school property or pick them up after school, the drop off/pick up route is to be followed. 3. Students who are dropped off in the back parking lot are able to enter the building using any back door – they do not have to walk around to the front or side of the building.4. No student should be dropped off or picked up on Lakeland or Summit.5. The drop off/pick up line is always single file. The parking lot is not a cut through between Lakeland and Summit.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:Hard to believe we are half way done with the school year already! It will certainly be a busy second half of the year. Last month, I began a series of community engagement meetings across the city that are very important in helping to determine the future of this excellent school district and to help me become better acquainted with the people of Lakewood. My number one goal is to listen to you and hear what you have to say about what you would like to see in your schools. I also will share with you my administrative team’s vision for maintaining a high-quality, top- performing district in these challenging economic times. Overall, my goals for these meetings are:

To maintain and build upon the high degree of trust that currently exists between the Lakewood community and its school system leaders

To inform internal and external stakeholders of the community about the financial challenges of the Lakewood City Schools and the need to affect decisions to balance the budget

To inform the community about Phase III of the Lakewood City Schools’ construction project. To secure feedback from the community about how they view the current challenges and

opportunities of the district To identify the best short- and long-term solutions for addressing district financial challenges and

capitalizing on the opportunities of the school system To maintain support for the next Lakewood City Schools operating levy

The remaining meetings, which will last about 90-minutes, will be as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 2, Horace Mann Elementary, 1251 West Clifton Blvd. (child care available) Wednesday, Feb. 8, Roosevelt Elementary School Gym, 14237 Athens. Ave. Wednesday, Feb. 15, Lincoln Elementary School Large Gym, 15615 Clifton Blvd. Thursday, Feb. 23, Emerson Elementary School Cafeteria, 13439 Clifton Blvd. Wednesday, Feb. 29, Harrison Elementary School Cafeteria, 2080 Quail Ave. (child care

available)

When the meetings have wrapped up, I will report back to the community what I have heard so that you may know what your fellow citizens have said and have an idea of the direction we might be going when the tough decisions are made. That meeting will take place on March 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school’s East Cafeteria. We are fortunate to live in a community that has shown tremendous support for its public schools. Community conversations about the future of our schools will result in a higher quality education for our students.

Staff Appreciation:  I just wanted to thank everyone who helped out during the conference week to make our Lincoln staff feel loved and appreciated.  We had an amazing group who made main dishes and provided all the filler food that makes the week go so smoothly. Thanks to:  Karene McBean for cooking the entire dinner on Wednesday night.  It was amazing, and the staff loved it! Also, thank you to Susan Chamot for cooking the main dish for Thursday's lunch!  We are so grateful to both of you.  It saved us a lot of money, so we can do other things for the staff throughout the year.  And then there were all the mom's who pitched in the little extras that make the staff's day: Kara Goeller - for pop & water the three days. Ann Reali-Watts - breakfast foods and juice on Friday Heather Barlow - Salad on Thursday Lisa Majeski - pumpkin rolls Sarah McClintock - bagels and candy for the three days.            Melinda Bees - dessert Liz Gabella - for getting Caribou coffee donated!  Love that! If there is anyone I forgot, please forgive me.  But I truly appreciate all your thoughtfulness and I know the staff did too.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.  Holly Roe

Dear Lincoln Families,

A Huge Scholastic Thank you!

You made a difference more than you’ll ever know.

First, thank you for your support of One for Books program. We raised $100.00 just in loose change! This money will be used to buy books for our school library.                                                                                                                           The One for Books money we collect also helps readers beyond our school and community. Scholastic matches monetary donations with a donation of up to one million books. The books go to national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping families in need. These organizations include the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc., and the Kids In Need Foundation.

Also, thank you for your support in attending events and purchasing books from our fair.  We collected almost $7000 in book fair sales!  Scholastic profits will be redeemed in Scholastic Dollars in the amount of $4000.00!  These dollars will be distributed among our teachers and staff to use on Scholastic materials to update our classrooms and LRC.  We could not have done it without your generous support!

Books enrich children’s lives – and we all reap the benefits. Thank you for your support of One for Books, Classroom Wish lists, “Grand “Event and Family Event at this year’s book fair.

Hope to see you next year!

Sincerely,

Elise Stois&Tiffany Bryson

Your Lincoln PTA 1st VP’s

BOXTOP UPDATE

A big THANK YOU to Lincoln parents, students and teachers for collecting and sending in boxtops. Our October collection totaled over $300, and our one year total has exceeded $1200. Our goal for this school year is to raise $1500 from the boxtops programs, and we need your help to reach it!

Keep saving and sending in your boxtops (over winter break and beyond) and ask your family and friends to save their boxtops for you. The Lincoln PTA earns cash for those boxtops to support programs for Lincoln students, and it really adds up.

The classroom that has the highest boxtops earnings will earn a pizza and ice cream party at the end of the school year. Below are the top five classes to date:

Room Grade Teacher202 4th/5th Mr. McGuan211 5th Ms. Ferrone203 4th Mr. Browngardt210 3rd Ms. Masgras109 1st Ms. Maisonet

Not Familiar with the Boxtops Program? For those of you that are new to this program, Boxtops are an easy way for the PTA to earn money for Lincoln students. Just clip them off participating products, gather them in an envelope or baggie, and send them with your child to their classroom. We earn 10 cents for each boxtop. Visit the boxtops website btfe.com to view a list of all of the participating products and bonus boxtop opportunities for buying certain products each month (they print out with your cash register receipt).

If you have any questions regarding Boxtops or any of the Easy Fundraisers, please contact Kelly Jablonowski at [email protected].
