    Dirasol Rapid, 22, 29 and 32 are formulated for use with solvent-based and UV curing inks in graphic and speciality screen printing. Dirasol 25 is specially formulated for printers of T-shirts, sports and fashion wear, using water-based or plastisol inks.Dirasol T is for the textile reel to reel flatbed printer with either automatic machines or tables.

  • Instructions for UseSafe LightingAllhandlingofDirasolemulsionsshouldbecarriedoutinlightoflowblueandultra-violetcontent.Aphotographicsafelightisnotessential,butitisadvisabletouseyelloworweaktungstenillumination.Ausefulformoflightfortheworkroomisprovidedbygoldfluorescenttubesanddaylightshouldbeexcludedorfilteredbyayellowlacquercoatingorfilmappliedoverwindows.

    SensitisingDirasoldiazoemulsionsaresuppliedasatwopacksystemconsistingof:1. ColouredEmulsion

    2. DiazoSensitiser

    whichshouldbemixedasfollows:i) Partfillthesensitiserbottlewithwatertonotlessthan80%

    ofitstotalcapacityandshakeituntilthesensitiserisfullydissolved.

    ii) Addthesensitisersolutiontotheemulsionandthoroughlystir-inwithaplasticorwoodenstirringstick.Ideallytheemulsionshouldbeallowedtode-gasforonehourbeforeuse.

    Preparing the ScreenDegreasethemeshinautomaticscreencleaningmachinesusingXtendPrep300SprayableDegreasingConcentrateorbyhandwithPrep102DegreasingandEmulsifyingConcentrate.WhendegreasingbyhandusingPrep102wetthescreenandapplywithaspongeorbrushandthenrubthemeshwithalightcircularmotion.Ensurethatbothsidesofthescreenarethoroughlytreated.LeavetostandforafewminutesandrinsewithcoldwatertoremovealltracesofPrep.Themeshmustbedrybeforecoatingwithemulsion.

    Coating TroughsFujifilmCoatingTroughshavebeendesignedfortheaccurateandconsistentcoatingofdirectphotostencilemulsions.Thetroughsarecomposedofprecisionextrudedaluminiumchannellingfittedwithinjectionmouldedendpieces.Thealuminiumchannellingofthetroughshasahardanodisedfinishwhicheffectivelysealsthesurface.Thisfeaturemakesthetroughseasiertocleanandalsoprotectsthemfromcorrosion.Theendpieceshaveaspecialshoulderwhichensuresthatthecoatingedgeisconsistentlyattheoptimumangleinrelationtothescreen.Tohelpeliminatethebeadsformedattheextremitiesofconventionaltroughs,specialslotshavebeenincorporatedintotheendpieces.Thesefeaturespermitevenrelativelyinexperiencedoperatorstocoatscreensfasterandmoreconsistently.FujifilmCoatingTroughsaredesignedtodepositmediumcoatingthicknesses.Itisthereforepossibletocoatascreenuptoagivenstencilthicknesswithfewerstrokesthanwouldberequiredwithasharperorlesspreciseedge.

    Automatic CoatingWhenusinganautomaticcoatingmachine,applyasimultaneoussinglecoattoeachsideofthescreen,followedbyasecondcoattothesqueegeeside.Ifahigherbuildisrequired,extracoatsshouldbeappliedtothesqueegeesideofthescreen.

    Hand CoatingDirasol Rapid, 22, 29, 32 and 25Standthescreenonedgeslightlyinclinedawayfromtheoperatorandprocessthescreenasfollows:Applyoneortwocoats,wetonwet,ontheprintsideofthescreenandthenapplyextracoatsonthesqueegeesideofthescreendependingonthestencilbuildrequired.

    Dirasol Diazo EmulsionsDirasol TStandthescreenonedge,slightlyinclinedawayfromtheoperator,andprocessthescreenasfollows:

    1. Applyoneormorecoatswetonwetontheprintsideofthescreentofillthemesh,thethicknessofthefinishedstencilbeingcontrolledbythemeshgrade.

    2. Ascrapecoattoimprovecosmeticappearancemaybeappliedonthesqueegeeside.

    Coatingfrombothsidesisneithernecessarynordesirableasthiscanentrapairbubbles,givingrisetoweakspots.Thisisespeciallylikelywithmonofilamentmeshescoarserthan43.80.

    DryingDrythescreeninahorizontalposition,squeegeesideup,indarknessorsubduedyellowlight.Awarmairfanorwellventilatedheatedcupboard(upto40C)maybeusedbutcareshouldbetakennottoblowdustontothedryingscreen.Dirasolscreensmaybestoredinthedarkatcooltemperaturespriortoexposure.SeeparagraphStorageforrecommendedmaximumperiod.

    ExposureCorrectexposureismostimportanttoobtainoptimumresolution,definitionandstencillife.Toestablishthis,withanunfamiliaremulsionorlightsource,theuseofanexposuretestscaleisrecommended. Thiscanbedoneby:

    1. Usinganexposurecalculator.

    2. Placingafinedetailpositivefilmoveracoatedscreenandgivingitaseriesofsteppedexposuresusingablackpapermask. Theexposuretimeisusuallydoubledfromonesteptothenext.Thecorrectexposureisthelongestexposurethatcanbegivenwhilststillobtainingoptimumstencilresolutionanddefinitionafterwashout.Over-exposedareaswouldresultinlossofdetail,whilstunder-exposedareasmayresultinweak,thinstencils.

    Positionthepositive,emulsionsideincontactwiththeDirasolcoating,ontheundersideofthedryscreen,securingwithtape.Thenplacethecompletescreenintothevacuumprintdownframeandensureperfectcontactbeforeexposingtolight.Thelengthofexposuretimedependsonthelightsource,thethicknessoftheDirasolcoating,thefinenessandcolourofthemesh,andthetransparencyofthebackgroundofthepositive.Thefollowingguidecanbethebasisofaninitialtestexposure.

    Theexposurevaluesquotedarethetimesrequiredtofullycureandthereforecompletelyhardenthesensitisedemulsionona120.40dyed(62.64whiteforDirasols25andT)monofilamentscreen,witha2+2coating(seealsoDirasolTtechnique).Usingthesethrough-cureexposurevaluespreventsemulsionbeingwashedawayduringdevelopmentandensuresstencilsofoptimumresolution,definition,durabilityanddecoatability.Stainlesssteel,dyedfabricsandmulti-coatstencilsrequirelongerexposure.

    DevelopingPlacethescreeninasinkorautomaticdevelopingmachineandgentlyspraybothsideswithcoldorwarmwater(notabove40C).After1-2minutesthespraypressurecanbeincreasedslightly.Continuedevelopinguntilallpartsoftheimageappearcleanandsharp.Immediatelyafterdeveloping,removesurfacemoisturewithascreenvacuumorbygentlymoppingbothsidesofthescreen(whichshouldbeinahorizontalposition)withasoftmoistchamoisleather.Thiswillspeedfinaldryingandalsoremoveanyimpuritiesthatmightclingtotheopenareasofthescreen.

    Final Drying and Spotting OutDrythestencilwiththeaidofawarmairfan.Anysmallblemishesorpinholes,usuallycausedbydustspecksorspotsonthepositive,canbefilledinbyspottingoutwithabrushcontainingscreenfillerorsensitisedDirasolemulsion.Afterspottingout,thescreenisreadyforprinting.Dirasols 25 and T should be re-exposed when used as a spot out with resistance to water-based inks.

    Waterproofing Dirasol Stencils(SeeProductInformationSheetonXtendScreenFillersandStencilTreatment)

    Sericure (SCK81)Sericureisasolutionwhichcanbeusedtoproducewaterresistantstencils.SericureissuitableforusewithallDirasolstencilsonpolyesterandstainlesssteelmesh.StencilstreatedwithSericurearemoredifficulttoreclaim.

    Instructions for use1. ApplySericuretobothsidesofthestencilusingasoftbrush orsponge.

    2. Formaximumstencildurabilityallowtreatedstenciltostand overnight,orleavetostandatroomtemperatureforonehour andthenplaceinfrontofhotfans(above40C)forafurther hour.

    Reclaiming the ScreenInautomaticscreencleaningmachines,removeinkresiduesusinganXtendScreenCleaneranddecoatstencilusingdilutedXtendStripLiquidConcentrate.Whenremovingbyhand,removealltracesofinkwitharagsoakedinXtendScreenCleaner.RinsethescreenwithwaterandthenapplydilutedXtendStriptobothsidesofthestencil.Leaveforafewminutes.Thestencilcanthenbeeasilyremovedwithastrongwaterjetorhighpressurewatergun.
