Page Two Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate Independence Day, it’s not hard to imagine that our Founding Fathers felt like they were, quoting Jesus from today’s gospel, “lambs among wolves.” Great Britain was a world renowned military power. Those who signed the Declaration of Independence all knew that they were putting their lives on the line for what was undoubtedly seen as a treasonous act against the British Empire. There have been other “lambs among wolves” in American history, men and

women who opposed very powerful forces. Voting was a right restricted to white males until Susan B. Anthony in the 19th century, and, in our day, Dr. Martin Luther King spoke out in favor of universal suffrage. Advocates for Pro-Life who speak out against abortion and capital punishment, along with those who advocate just and fair wages for workers, are the “lambs among wolves” among us today. It has always been a struggle for those whom society has thought of as weak to stand up to the powerful. Yet, let us never forget that the Lamb of God is always with those who stand up and speak out so that God’s peace and justice will one day rule our world. May you and those you love have an enjoyable and safe Independence Day celebration. Let us not forget to pray for all who sacrificed their lives and who continue to sacrifice their lives in service to our country. In the Word,

The harvesting of much of our fresh produce is very labor intensive. So is harvesting the “kingdom of God” labor intensive. The fruitfulness of this labor is not measured by bushel baskets, boxes, or bottom line—or by being accepted or rejected. It is measured by presence, proclamation, and perseverance in pursuit of Jesus’ mission which brings about the “kingdom of God.” Jesus tells his laborer-disciples what to do when they are not received: shake the town’s dust off their feet. They are not to waste time, but to

get on with the harvest elsewhere. Their labor will always produce fruit, for the “kingdom of God” cannot be shaken off—it is here, at hand, to stay. We are disciples who must shake off the dust of temptation to quit when facing difficulties or opposition, the dust of discouragement when there seemingly is not fruit for our efforts, the dust of indifference or ignorance. What keeps us present and faithful is a growing awareness that we do not labor alone or in vain. Whether facing rejection or receiving acceptance, our labor for the “kingdom of God” is guaranteed success, for the guarantor is Jesus.

WEEKLY OFFERTORY The offertory collection for June 25/26 totaled $11,093.

451 envelopes were used for an envelope total of $10,401. Loose offertory totaled $692. May God bless you for your generosity.

The budgeted offertory for each week is $14,808. This week’s collection was $3,715 under that goal.

E pluribus Unum (from many one). This was the motto of our country until the

1950’s. It describes how the colonies united to form a union of individual states which became a great nation. Together they found the courage to sacrifice for a common cause to benefit all. Over the years many gave their lives in the goal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. True life is found in the belief that there is no greater gift than that of giving one’s life for another—the sacrifice we celebrate every time we attend Mass. This act allows us to live free from sin through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What greater happiness can we experience than to live in complete union with God? While we are many, we become one by the grace we receive in the Eucharist. Just as the individual grains of wheat and the grapes are pressed together to make the bread and wine that are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, we are transformed into the mystical Body of Christ by our participation. Thank God for our country and the life he has provided for us!

What questions do you have about the Catholic faith? Please send your questions to Carol Schubert by calling 630-628-0900 x104 or e-mailing [email protected]. Why did God rest on the seventh day? God’s rest from his work points toward the completion of creation, which is beyond all human efforts. [349] Although man in his work is the junior partner of his Creator (Gen 2:15), he can by no means redeem the world by his toil. The goal of creation is “new heavens and a new earth” (Is 65:17) through a redemption that is given to us as a gift.

Thus the Sunday rest, which is a foretaste of heavenly rest, is superior to the work that prepares us for it. The glory of God is man fully alive; moreover, man’s life is the vision of God. Why did God create the world? “The world was made for the glory of God” (First Vatican Council). [293-294, 319] There is no other reason for creation than love. In it God’s glory and honor appears. To praise God, therefore, does not mean applauding the Creator. After all, man is not a spectator to the work of creation. For him, “praising” God means being grateful for his own existence together with all creation.
