Approximately 300 people came together on a warm, wet November night last month to help the blues society celebrate its twenty-second anniversary. Our thanks to everyone who came out to see Jimi V and Screamin' John, the Stray Cat Blues Band and the Shaun Murphy Band. I would first like to thank our sponsors for making the night possible. This year we re-ceived backing from Guitar Emporium, Interfaces, Nina Wilson, Crescent Hill Radio AM1650, Bonnie's Professional Dog Grooming of Jeffersonville, IN, WFPK 91.9FM, Voluforms and the Galaxie Agency. On Friday, December 10, Michael John Robillard, better known as “Duke,” will make an appearance at Jim Porter's Tavern on Lexington Road. Duke Robillard has a long and distinguished blues career. He was one of the founding members of the band Roomful of Blues and played guitar for The Fabulous Thunderbirds replac-ing Jimmie Vaughan. He has been nominated for numerous W.C. Handy and Grammy awards and has ap-peared on over 50 albums. Duke will take the stage at 8:00 pm. Admission is $10 in advance, $12 the day of show but is free until 10:00 pm for Kentuckiana Blues Society members. Local blues/rock band D Man and the Alleyhounds will play later in the evening.

On Saturday, December 18, V-Groove and the Greg Foresman Band will take part in a benefit for the Multiple Sclerosis Society at Gerstle's. Gerstle's is located at 3801 Frankfort Ave. The special “jam for a cure” will fea-ture a raffle for several items including U of L basketball tickets, an Alvarez guitar signed by several musi-cians, dinner at Proof on Main St, a New Year's Eve package at the Downtown Hyatt, and basketballs signed by Rick Pitino and John Calipari. Admission is only $10.

It's time to start voting for next year's Stevie Ray's Hall of Fame Benefit. Vote for two of your favorite local blues artists from now until Christmas at Stevie Ray's or you can send an email to Todd at the bar. His email address is [email protected]. Past recipients include Bob Ramsey, Jimmy Gardner, Lamont Gillispie, Mike Lynch, Ricky Mason and Steve Fergu-son. The winners will be announced at a show next year that will benefit the Animal Care Society of Louis-ville.

New Music Reviews!

The Mighty Jivesters Side One

The Mighty Jivesters is a 4 piece band hailing from Denver Colorado. Andres Csapo (“AC”) plays harp, piano and sings. Dave Foret plays bass, Jasco plays guitar, and Ryan Sapp plays drums.

There are six songs on the CD, all originals. Jasco started playing guitar at an early age, developed a love for classical guitar, then flamenco. He saw a Chris Duarte show and the blues bug bit him. After forming his own

band, he went on the road for 11 years and played many festivals such as the King Biscuit Blues Fest, and several venues in Europe. During that time, he also developed a love of jazz and became a follower of Django Reinhardt and played in a couple of groups that focused on Django’s gypsy jazz genre and wrote some songs in that vein. He currently plays in groups that walk the line between blues and jazz….which brings us to this CD.

The CD’s songs are indeed a mix of blues, jazz and a little soft rock. The lyrics are pretty good but not exceptional. The musicianship is very good and the recording is professional even though it is not on a recognizable label. The songs are original and grow on you after multiple listenings.

Matt Hill On The Floor Vizztone

Matt Hill's debut CD is intense and high energy with 10 original tunes on the 14-song list.

With a large supporting cast of 11 musicians joining him, Hill basically rips through a set of what the PR sheet calls "deep-fried rhythm and blues." Produced by veteran artists Dave Gross and Bob Margolin (also guest on at least one track), Hill is still left to be the unmistakable leader in the final product.

Hill proves multi-talented, not only singing lead vocals but also accompanying himself quite skillfully on guitar, lap steel and even bass on occasion.

The young Greensboro, North Carolina-based artist tears it up with rockabilly, Texas boogie, Chicago-style and even Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis-influenced material. While most of the tunes are up-tempo, track 12 is a slower Delta/Chicago combo with slide.

This young man will be receiving lots of notice in the future--and is likely getting it already.

Kentucky Thunder ‘Bout Damn Time Self Produced

It was just a matter of time--perhaps a long time, however--before these four powerful veteran Nashville-based singers with Kentucky roots released an album. For 14 years, this quartet has been thrilling audiences in Nashville with roots, blues, rock, country, funk and gospel-style tunes sung in a way as to cause a delightful meltdown for

anyone listening. This 14-song CD of mostly originals, recorded live at Nashville's 3rd & Lindsley, recreates just such a feeling. To say the effect is stunning would be understatement.

Kentucky Thunder is Jonell Mosser, Vickie Carrico, Etta Britt and Sheila Lawrence. While Jonell may be familiar to most of the readers of this review, perhaps the others are not. However, all have had stellar music careers of their own. Each takes vocal solos on this CD; however, together, these four voices are nothing short of breathtaking regardless of genre chosen for any particular song. They are joined by lead guitarist Bob Britt, bassist Steve Mackey, Jon Coleman and Randy Leago on piano and Hammond B3 and Chris Eddy on drums. These are highly skilled musicians who do an admirable job backing up some of the finest vocal talent anywhere.

It is nearly impossible to pick the best tune on the CD. The songs are a good mix of high energy, up-tempo, slow ballads, gospel-style, funky blues and piano-driven country rock delivered as only these four ladies can do. They explode right out of the blocks with John Hiatt's "Paper Thin" on Lawrence's lead (sounding a lot like Cher here). Most of the more "familiar" songs are those by Mosser ("One Thing I Know" and "I Am On Your Side"). The more bluesy and funky tunes are those either written or vocally led by (or both) the spunky and powerful Carrico ("Love Is a Gift," And "Better Fantasy") as well as Britt's bluesy ballad "What about Me" and the boogie piano blues of Willie Dixon's "I Don't Care Who Knows."

While this might not be a true blues CD, once you strap on your seatbelt and put on your hardhat (because the ceiling's comin' down, folks), it won't matter. Besides, as they prove on this CD, these soulful sisters can sing the blues with the best of them--when they .want to.

Nicole Christian Run Rabbit Runn Self-Produced

WRITER's NOTE: This review will be a little different and more challenging to write because there is a story in-side the review that needs telling. It involves Stephen King. Yes, that's right: THAT Stephen King. And what's he got to do with blues?

Dayton, Ohio born, Toronto-based blues singer and songwriter Nicole Christian has released a CD of 11 slide-guitar driven, bouncy, toe-tapping, old-style, percussive sometimes dark chorded blues songs with some rockabilly, alt country and jazz influences thrown in for good measure through the use of no less than 17 instruments (spoons included). Press material says the 28-year-old wanted to capture the feel of a live jam--and that she's done--and done very, very well. The young lady is talented, as is her producer Mitch Girio, who undoubtedly had quite a challenge with this one yet pulled it off without a hitch.

But, what about King? What's the story? Space won't permit the whole nine yards, so here's the capsule version: New York state fifth grader writes letter to hero, who happens to be horror writer King, whose books Christian is already "devouring." Response from King, framed as keepsake. Fast forward, years later, to the "present." Christian reads "Bag of Bones," where King writes about a murdered blues singer in the 1920s. Inside the book, an incomplete blues song appears, line by line, sometimes separated by many pages. Blueswoman has idea to combine some of that with her own lyrics and melody--which takes about two years. May 2010, working on this CD, Christian has title for special song: "Barn Dance." Suddenly, "copyright" "bells" go off in her head. Quick permission letter sent. End result: through King's assistant, permission granted. To quote: "She can use the words, but I don't get the sole credit. She and I share, with her name first. Steve."

So, the toe-tapping track seven, "Barn Dance," is on this CD, co-written with none other than Stephen King. And it's not a scary song at all.

Speaking of collaboration, as numerous as the aforementioned instruments is a rather impressive lineup of studio musicians, not for name recognition but more for sheer numbers. And all are talented.

Any tunes here where slide is prominently featured get the nod for favorite/best cuts. A mention must also go to Alfie Smith, who ably cuts a mean swath through a few tunes here with his greasy and skillful electric lap steel to complement Christian's nice work on her Ruby metal body resonator.

As is her hero, Christian, through skillful lyricism and instrumentation, is quite the storyteller. Now, if she can just get King to learn slide guitar....

Joe Pitts Ten Shades of Blue Kijam Records

Joe Pitts is a singer and guitarist. He's not a lyricist--at least not on this recording. This new CD acknowledges that as he covers 10 different style blues tunes from various artists with his own signature stamp on them.

Pitts is a soulful, sometimes gritty singer who at times vocally resembles David Clayton-Thomas of Blood Sweat & Tears. He can sing, as well as play guitar, with any style of blues. Special mention needs to go to blues harp

player Gary Getts, who is prominently featured throughout the song list.

The CD opens up with the groove-heavy and slightly funky version of "Breaking Up Somebody's Home" (Jackson, Matthews), followed by Muddy Waters' Chicago-style "Crosseyed Cat." Pitts then gives the "Jimi treatment" to Walter Trout's "Clouds on the Horizon."

Other notable songs are the very typical (but so enjoyable) "I'm Worried," by Elmore "Mister 1, IV, V-with-the-usual-slide-riffs" James, the easy blues of John Mayall's "Walkin' on Sunset," featuring slide gutar by Terry Bradley, and finally Peter Green's dark and somber "The World Keeps on Turning," which features Pitts and a very staccato acoustic guitar.

Pitts has done an admirable job with all these songs. He's put his own spin on them while keeping the original spirit of each tune alive, and very well.

Friday August 20th This year was different in that as I walked past Pigmania – there was one that I Iiked (besides me) – it was a shiny pig: brown and light brown and didn’t look like a concrete pig. A slick pig. A pig with a finish like a rebuilt ’57 Chevy. However, I didn’t bring it home with me – as in other years – I returned my focus to my favorite pig—me. Much to the vendors’ de-light. Who is the mastermind who books this Madison event each year? How is/are he/she/they able to top all the years before, “greatest yets”, with this year’s “greatest yet” lineup? Beats me – but they do it – and here was the lineup: 6:00 p.m. Greg Foresman. What a picker, what a singer, what a showman. What a band. I’m getting low on adjectives on the first group. 8:00 p.m. Stacy Mitchhart. Superb showman – walked out into the crowd and played among them for a half hour of his show. Never missed a lick or dropped a beat. Great show. 10:00 p.m. Davy Knowles and Backdoor Slam. Youngest performer on the show this year: Picked his guitar a million licks guaranteed – knew where he was gonna end up when he started, the band stayed with him and the young ladies in the swooned and panted and worshipped a young guitar master who – if he doesn’t let the lifestyle eat him up – will be around the music scene for as long as he wishes to be. Saturday August 21st 1:00 p.m. Hambone. He’s been around for a few years. He’s played lots of festivals...he’s amazed us before – and this year he was back on the Madison stage for us. He gets better every time we see him and he did not disappoint us this year. Sorry ladies, but I think he got married since we saw him last. 2:30 p.m. The Tyrone Cotton Band. We see this group in Louisville regularly and they regularly amaze us. Smooth vo-cals, great guitar playing, good song selection. Like fine wine – this group gets better the longer they stay and play. When you mention Tyrone’s name you’ll hear comparisons to other heavyweights such at Tom Waits and Dylan, among others. 4:00 p.m. Big Al and the Heavyweights Big question for this groups 1st appearance in the area: Which one is Big Al? I decided it was the guitar player – short in stature – hence the nickname “Big Al” – but long in his craft – but, but, but – no one agreed with me and they were right – Big Al was the drummer of this very lively group. All you for a southern swamp stomp, boogie-ing, mud dauber whomping, shrimp eating, easy going, in your face, get down to it and do it Lou-isiana house party. A live wire group from the first notes to the last and real crowd pleasers. THE CLOSERS…and we got 3 BIG acts here, starting with: 6:00 p.m. From California by way of Texas – Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps. I think that Teresa, Delbert, and Bonnie Raitt are all in some fashion half related. Half brothers and sisters of some folks who voices never quite cleared up, always sound kinda scratchy but nice, growly but sultry, forced but pure, like you’s in a Honky Tonk hoping or in a Church needing. There is a T-Shirt accredited to a Mayor of someplace that says: “Teresa James – She can sing like a bird or like a bat out of hell” – and that prolly sums up her range. Great band – husband/co- writer on bass. 8:00 p.m. Jimmy Hall, voice of Wet Willie of 1970’s fame. Works with Delbert, works with Greg Martin of The Kentucky Headhunters, branching off with a group called the Mighty Jeremiahs. Women love him. When gets on stage – all the estrogen for miles seeks him out. THE BIG DEAL. DELBERT McCLINTON “Delbert McClinton is one of the greats, bar none. While some people may not know his name, they will recognize his music because it is played on almost every type of radio station.”

Delbert came up and did a few songs. The estrogen hanging around the stage from Jimmy Hall didn’t leave but called more estrogen up. Then Delbert called on Teresa and they teamed up to sing a beautiful version of “Cryin’ Time” (from Teresa’s CD “By Request”) that prolly had people from Cincy to Louisville polishing belt buckles. Delbert’s band is top notch… with them and Jimmy and Teresa, Delbert closed the Madison 2010 Ribberfest with 3 songs that featured them all. Delbert hosts a cruise each January, Sandy Beaches Cruise, that usually sails from some Florida port. Punch in delbert.com on your computer and read all about it. Get out your suntan lotion and take a boat ride in January across the Caribbean Sea for the vacation of your life.
