Phonics workshop for Reception parents !
We would like to remind all our new Reception parents and carers about our phonics (letters and sounds) workshop next week on Wednesday 30th September at 9am. The workshop will let you know how we teach phonics in school and how you can support your child at home. We look forward to seeing you all here!
PTA AGM and Cheese and Wine night Wednesday 4th November !
We know it’s a little while off, but put this date in your diaries! Wednesday 4th November is our annual PTA AGM and free cheese and wine night so come along for a (free!) glass of wine and a bite to eat. Whilst you’re here you can help us vote
in the new PTA committee!
Don’t forget that as a parent or carer at Ashmead you are automatically a member of the PTA. If you would like a committee role, please come along and offer your services.
Reading volunteers We have had a few parents who have enquired about volunteering to support reading in the school particularly in our EYFS and KS1 classes. We already have some parents who come in and support us already which we are very grateful for. If you already volunteer or would be keen to volunteer, could you please come to a short meeting in the small hall on Tuesday morning at 9.15am. We welcome support from people who can offer a minimum of 1 hour a week. If you are unable to attend this meeting but are keen to be a reading volunteer, please could you email me at [email protected] outlining what days/times suit you best. Many thanks, Faye -‐ Inclusion Leader
!Report from the Curriculum and Achievement committee chair,
Sharon Shrubsall !Governors met this week to discuss the end of key stage data for children at Ashmead for 2014/15. Governors discussed the anonymous data results for children in Early Years as well as for children in KS1 and KS2. The governors, with Sean and Jane, not only looked at this current data but compared the data over the last three years to consider the progress made. !The results are very impressive showing that children are making signicicant progress each year. Governors were particularly impressed with how thorough Sean and Jane were. They explained the things that went well to enable the progress, as well as the areas of focus for the school to work on to ensure the children’s future progress. !The data results put Ashmead school above the national average. These positive results illustrate the impact of consistently good teaching, as well as targeting the individual support the children need in order to thrive. !
Whole School Art Project This year we decided to launch the new school year with a whole school art project. Our project is based on an image titled 'Mr Linden’s Library' and is taken from a collection of images and corresponding captions by Chris Van Allsburg called 'The Adventures of Harris Burdick'. The caption that accompanies this interesting image is 'He had warned her about the book. Now it was too late' and as you can probably imagine, the caption itself has given the children even more fuel to cire their imaginations. The children from across the school have been given time to draw their own ideas and thoughts from the image and these have been the basis of a series of activities, skills and techniques that they have been learning and taking part in over the last few weeks. We have been particularly focused on talking about the processes behind pieces of art and teaching the children specicic art skills and techniques so that they can recine these and create a fantastic end piece of art work. The process is of course as important as the project (and sometimes more!). Furthermore we have used the image as the base for various different types of writing -‐ we can't wait to read some of the poems, spells and stories to come from it! We will be holding an exhibition for parents and carers after school on Monday 6th October so that everyone has a chance to take time to look at some of the imaginative and creative pieces we have created.
School Councillors 2015-‐2016 One of the ‘fundamental British values’ that we are now required to promote in school is ‘Democracy’ and over the last couple of weeks, the children have been exercising their democratic rights by voting in classes for new School Councillors to represent each class from Y2 -‐ Y6. We’d like to congratulate all the children on being voted in as a school council rep and will look forward to hearing their views about how to improve the school throughout the year.
Data information sheets Next week we will be sending home your child’s information sheet for you to check. This shows your child’s details like their name, date of birth, address, any allergies, your emergency contact numbers etc. Is it really important that you check these, update them if necessary and return them to school by Friday 2nd October, even if there have been no changes. Please see the ofcice if you need further clarity.
