Deputy Principal’s Report Learning and Support Engadine West PS The school learning and support team plays a key role in ensuring that the specific needs of students with disability and additional learning and support needs are met. The team: supports teachers in identifying and responding to the additional learning needs of students; facilitates and coordinates a whole school approach to improving the learning outcomes of every student; coordinates planning processes and resourcing for students with disability and additional learning and support needs; designs and implements the supports required to build teacher capacity so that all students access quality learning; develops collaborative partnerships with the school, parents and carers, other professionals and the wider

school community. Every school has a learning and support team. The composition of teams may vary as they are made up of mem-bers according to the needs of the particular school and community in which they work. At Engadine West PS our learning support team (LST) includes our school Principal, Deputy Principals (LaSTs), School Counsellor, Reading Intensive Program (RIP) Teacher and volunteer staff members. The learning support team meets each Tuesday. An agenda is set for students to be reviewed each week by the Deputy Principals (LaSTs). This is based on current reviews and the monitoring of student progress and pending referrals. During their lunch break, a referred student’s teacher will attend the LST meeting as will their stage’s Assistant Principal. Evidence of student learning difficulties, reports from specialist medical practitioners and therapists, reports from parents and historical intervention is discussed and strategies are formulated to address targeted goals in an individual learning plan. Parents are consulted in this process to ensure a strong partnership in supporting the student. This ensures that there are strategies in place to provide every student opportunity to reach their poten-tial. In 2018 Jason Wilkins and Ross Edwards are sharing the four days per week school LaST allocation. Below is the actual role statement for a LaST from the Department. This role was significantly remodelled recently. The school has been operating under the old model and for this year will move to a transition model for the new roles. This means, part of the LaST role will be the familiar approach of teaching students directly, and part of the role will be the new model that seeks to collaborate with and develop teachers. There is also significant administration, organisation and community contact time within the role. NSW Department of Education role statement for Learning and Support Teacher The Learning and Support Teacher will, through the school’s learning and support team, provide direct and timely specialist assistance to students in regular classes with additional learning and support needs and their teachers. Many of these students come from diverse cultural, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds. The Disability Standards for Education 2005 provides the context for the role and activities of the Learning and Support Teacher. Emphasis in the role will reflect the needs of individual students and school priorities and programs that support students with additional learning and support needs. The role will be underpinned by a collaborative and consultative approach so that the student and/or their parent or carer are actively involved in the student’s education. The Learning and Support Teacher will: work collaboratively with the classroom teacher to support assessment for learning of their students

with additional educational needs and identify specific learning and support needs; plan, implement, model, monitor and evaluate teaching programs for students with additional learning and support needs in conjunction with regular classroom teachers; plan, implement, model, monitor and evaluate personalised adjustments for learning where required,

with the classroom teacher, student and/or parent or carer; model exemplary classroom practice when tailoring adjusted learning programs for students with ad-

ditional learning needs;

Deputy Principal’s Report provide direct support for students with additional learning and support needs through a range of strategies (including direct instruction, delivery of adjusted learning programs, assessment and monitoring

of progress) including the areas of social integration, language and communication, literacy, numeracy and behaviour. This may include students with confirmed disabilities;

provide professional specialist advice, support and mentoring to classroom teachers on:

how best to cater for the diverse learning needs in their classrooms, and how to effectively work in partnership with families to maximise learning opportunities for students at school and at home;

provide professional specialist advice and assistance about students with additional learning needs to the school’s learning and support team;

assist with professional learning for class teachers and school learning support officers within their school and local network of schools where appropriate.

In undertaking their work the Learning and Support Teacher will not be used to provide relief for teachers/executive or to establish a separate class.

Congratulations to all the students who have trialed for PSSA winter teams. Even though Engadine West PS enters the maximum amount of teams into competitions unfortunately, we can not take every student who wishes to participate. Our teachers do take care and consideration when trialing students over two sessions and make decisions on what is observed during the trials. If a student is not selected they still have wonderful opportunities for sport. Our school sport program is skills based, well organised and engaging and includes a range of sports and games. Swimming is also offered each term as an option. Representative sport is an opportunity for identified students to further develop their talents and skills and demonstrate good sportsmanship when competing against representatives from other schools. Our sport selection policy is on the school website:

http://www.engadinew-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies If your child is disappointed about not being selected for PSSA, try to encourage them to be proud of doing their best, being a good sport and promote the development of their resilience by being proud of their effort.

Visit http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/developing-resilience-in-your-child for more information. Ross Edwards Deputy Principal

Coles Sports for Schools

This year Engadine West PS has registered for the Coles Sports for Schools program. The race for Sports for Schools vouchers has begun! The vouchers will go towards the purchase of sports gear for students to use at the school. For every $10 spent at any Coles supermarket, customers will receive one Sports for Schools voucher. We are asking all families and friends to start collecting and send their vouchers to the collection bins located in the school office foyer or directly in the bin provided for Engadine West PS in Coles Engadine. Thankyou for supporting our school!

Street Library Launch The library proudly launched the Engadine West PS children’s street library on Monday. The engaging and brightly painted street library house is located outside the library which provides all students the opportunity of taking a book home to own and enjoy. Donation of pre-loved and unwanted children’s books will be greatly appreciated so the supply of books can be regenerated. The initiative has been extremely well received and very popular amongst the students. A parent/adult street library will also be launched shortly…….stay tuned for more details! Margaret Evans and Janet Evans Teacher Librarians

A big thankyou to Charlie Roach and team for constructing our wonderful street libraries and to Sandra Kiris for her amazing artwork on our children’s library!
