Coober Pedy is Australia’s real ‘DownUnder’, famous for its fabulous opals and bizarresubterranean homes. For generations, minershave dug into the white and orange rock to extractthe valuable, sparkling stone. The tunnels andchambers were converted into undergroundshomes in order to escape from the desert heat.

Coober Pedy ‘evolved’ as the result ofa massive post war Opal Rush where hardypioneers developed a make or break preciousgem industry in the desert terrain.

6 of 8 Coober Pedy residents living a make-shiftexistence in Adelaide and Port Augusta while theyhave regular kidney dialysis treatment welcomedthe opportunity to return home when the dialysis

bus visited Coober Pedy this month.

The dialysis bus, visiting remote communities includingthe APY Lands was stationed at the Coober Pedy Hospitalfor two weeks allowing 6 of 8 local residents to spendtime at home with their families while continuing withtheir treatment.

Dialysis is a treatment that does some of the things doneby healthy kidneys. It is needed when our own kidneyscan no longer take care of our body's needs.

The incidence of end stage kidney disease for Indigenouspeoples is especially high in remote and very remote areasof Australia, with rates almost 18 times and 20 times thoseof comparable non-Indigenous peoples.

Joanne Dingaman pictured below, is the most recentcasualty of kidney disease.

Joanne was flown out of Coober Pedy on 14 November2013 and diagnosed with end stage renal failure and willnow spend the rest of her life waiting around for dialysistreatments.

“I was intially taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, andhave been in Adelaide ever since,” said Joanne.

“First I stayed in Kaanga Wadli which is a step-downunit, but that is only available for three months. After thatI had to find my own way in the wider Adelaide communityand was able to stay with people that I knew, who reallyhave no room for me, and then find my own way intodialysis, and the Kaana Wadli shuttle bus service was nolonger available to me as an outpatient,” she said.

“This is what happens to country people when they haveto stay in temporary accommodation and have a permanentproblem.”

“We would like to see the AMYAC board support the localmembership who are now suffering with kidney disease”.

Joanne aged 55 was put into the Umewarra Children’sHome as a child. She said her mother and other womenwere pregnant at the time of the Maralinga bombings andlived and travelled through the desert not knowing of thecontamination dangers.

”My mother died of kidney disease and failure three monthsafter I was born. There was no alchohol involved, just10 years of bombing,” she said.

Kidney disease is considered an epidemic and is 10 timesmore common among among Indigenous people thanamong non-Indigenous people.

Statistics based on ANZDATA Registry analysis, from1999 to 2009, showed that the number of people receivingmaintenance dialysis from Central Australia more thantripled from 62 to 209. This figure was expected to doublein the following 5 or 6 years.

Joanne has her own home in Coober Pedy and haspreviously worked at the Coober Pedy Area School, andthe Coober Pedy Hospital.

“I have worked as a Cultural Consultant for Child andFamily Health in Coober Pedy and was working as a Para-Legal for the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement when Iwas diagnosed with kidney disease.”

“This part of my life is about getting to know my familyafter many years of growing up in the mission and missingout on those early relationships.”

“To pack up and move again would be financially difficultand emotionally draining, when I am just getting to knowmy family at last,” said Joanne.

The dialysis sessions in Coober Pedy took 4 hours everythree days.

Joanne said that she appreciated the two weeks that shewas able to spend in Coober Pedy before setting out onthe road again to live temporarily elsewhere in order tohave regular dialysys treatment.

Bobby Brown pictured above has done 20 or so moretrips with his family on the Stuart Highway since we spoketo him earlier this year. “We want to come home to mycountry,” he said.

“I have a lot of hope now because some of the AMYACElders approached me and said, “we are going to dosomething”, Bobby said..

Dorothy Williams has lived in Coober Pedy all of her life, but for the past 10 years she has been receiving dialysistreatment in Port Augusta.

“My sister was on dialysis after me, but because ofdiabetes she had her leg amputated, but died and becauseshe died she is back here now!”.

“I would like to see dialysis in Coober Pedy permanently, then I can be at home. All of my family and cousins arehere,” said Dorothy.

The South Australian Government is continuing toinvestigate how the repeal of Queensland’s Wild

Rivers laws will affect local irrigators.

Minister Hunter said Lake Eyre was dependent on waterflows from the Cooper, Diamantina and Georgina Riversin Queensland, and any changes to the management ofthese Rivers could have a significant impact on SouthAustralia.

“Our water resources are integral to our ongoing economicprosperity,” he said.

“Pastoralists, tourism operators and Aboriginalcommunities in the region rely on the Lake Eyre Basin fortheir livelihood.

“The changes made to the management of these rivernetworks in Queensland could have serious impacts onthose local communities.

“We’ve repeatedly expressed concerns about what thesechanges will mean for local communities – and are deeply

Fears over local impact of WildRivers Act repeal

concerned about what this may mean for flowsdownstream, groundwater recharge and the base levelof flows in the Lake Eyre Basin.”

Minister Hunter said the State Government has nowreceived data and modelling from the QueenslandGovernment.

“We want to ensure these changes do not affect thequality and quantity of flows into South Australia, orhave a detrimental impact on the Lake Eyre Basin,” hesaid.

“We now have information from the QueenslandGovernment, but further detailed modelling is required.

“Once that analysis has been completed, we will be ina better position to respond.

“But our priority here remains the sustainablemanagement of the Lake Eyre Basin, and ensuring thatthose South Australians who rely on the Basin are notleft disadvantaged by changes made by the QueenslandGovernment.

Lindemann Drive

Karl Lindemann was the District Supervisor for theE&WS in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Known in Coober Pedy as Charlie, he started with thewaterworks in 1966 as a general caretaker, administrator and maintenance man. He marked thewater ration cards when people came to pump theirweekly allotment into 44-gallon drums and collectedtheir fees.

Charlie was there when the solar still was built. In thosedays there was a bore on site at the eastern end of thewater reserve and a reverse osmosis plant too.

Karl came to Australia from Berlin in 1952. Timeswere hard in post-war Germany so he signed a contractwith the Victorian Railways, left his wife and daughter, and came to Australia where he agreed to work to payoff his passage. He paid off his debt and, at the sametime, saved £450 to bring his wife Gertrude anddaughter Christina out to join him. Karl had learnedEnglish at school and also as a POW in an Americancamp in France. The Lindemanns lived in Geelongwhere Karl was a train guard.

In 1958, Karl came to Coober Pedy for a visit with aHungarian neighbour. This friend used to work inGeelong most of the year and come to Coober Pedy inthe winter to gouge opal.

After his return, back in Geelong, Karl applied for ajob in Darwin with the government stores.

by Sue Britt

He won the position so the Lindemanns sold their houseand packed up the family (now with 3 children) andheaded off for Darwin in their Austin A40 towing a trailerwith all their possessions.

They stopped in Coober Pedy on the way. Karl hadsome friends here. He found some opal in JewellersShop and they decided to stay. Harry Hammerstallsupplied them with a large black tent where they liveduntil they found a dugout. Karl mined opal for 7 yearsand his family grew to include 5 children. He decidedto take the job with the E&WS for a more secureincome.

Back then “Coober Pedy was like a family. Everybodylooked after everybody.” Karl gave as an example astory about the time when they were living out at NineMile in a caravan and one of the kids got sick. Theyhad to take her to the nearest hospital, which was inTarcoola. After a week there, they were on their wayback when the car broke down. A passerby took thenews to Coober Pedy and their neighbour drove downto pick them up.

Gertrude didnt have any nursing experience or trainingbut she took on the responsibility of the medical box andradio because no one else was willing to do it. Theywere living in a caravan by the current site of the hospitalwith a small house with a red door. Gertrude had todeal with some serious injuries in her time as medicalofficer on call. Once, a man came in with a nearly-cut-off arm. Another time it was someone who had beenhit on the head with a crowbar in a fight. Karl helpedher deal with the emergencies. They often had to givefirst aid for hours before the flying doctor plane arrived.

Charlie worked with Coober Pedy E&WS until 1974when he asked for a transfer to a place nearer Adelaide. He was transferred to Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valleywhere he was the District Foreman until his retirement.

Bill Lennon - a man of history,a family of Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is a fabulous mix of cultures:European, Asian and Aboriginal. Although

physically it is an amazing, fascinating moonscapeof an environment, the real fascination for me, asan anthropologist, is in the extraordinary cultural

diversity in the Coober Pedy township.

Dr Timothy K Haines JP, FAAS, MMIA

several of Australia’s military involvements since then),seemed to have little to do with this country, but fromanother perspective was formative in Australia’sdevelopment.

Think of Breaker Morant, for instance. James Lennonand his brothers Ted and Brian settled in Australia afterthe war, all of them marrying Aboriginal women. Jameswas offered Wandjabila, a station this side of Indulkana,at £2 per square mile. He and his brother Brian managedthis property, cutting down trees to feed their cattle evenduring the drought and Depression years of the 1920s,borrowing money from the government to keep going. But he was finally forced out for his family’s sake, leavingBrian to manage the property.

Bill’s father earned money by sinking wells around all thestations in the west of the State. Sinking wells in thosedays was hard manual labour, without the benefit of moderndrilling machines! Bill’s mother Bungalah (“Molly”) – aYankunytjatjara woman – worked in the hotel at Oodnadattaprior to meeting and marrying James.

Later, James, Bill and the family were shepherding sheepalong ancient trails to Mt Willoughby from Evelyn Downs.Molly’s father (Bill’s maternal grandfather), Wingillija, isburied at Mt Willoughby, the one million acre station whichstarts just north of Coober Pedy, extending north as faras Cadney Park and for tens of kilometres either side ofthe highway. Bill is now the owner and, in an Aboriginalsense, custodian of this land, which he and his son Williammanage with the assistance of other family members.

Bill, now still a strong, fit man of 82 years, was born in1933, before that other great conflagration and historicalmarker of Australian identity: World War II. He has strongchildhood memories of American army trucks thunderingthrough Coober Pedy on their way to the NorthernTerritory following the Japanese bombing of Darwin andBroome in 1942. Later he travelled with his close-knitfamily by camel to the Umeewarra Mission near PortAugusta, where he spent five formative years. He laterworked as a shearer on numerous stations between PortAugusta and Coober Pedy, until marrying his beautiful(late) wife Daphne (pictured left with a younger Bill). Fromthe late sixties to the early eighties, Bill was a lay preacherin the Brethren church: part of that time in Coober Pedy.

Here I shall describe one individual who combines inhimself much of that diversity; who lives most of histime on Mt Willoughby Station to the north of the townbut is widely-known in Coober Pedy itself, where he spentmany of his early years.

Bill Lennon is a man steeped in cultures and histories: thehistories of both European and Aboriginal Australia. Hisfather, James Michael Lennon, was an Irishman whofought in the Boer War – a colonial conflict commencingbefore Australian Federation that, from one viewpoint (like

HISTORICAL SOCIETY REVISITOLYMPIC OPAL FIELD

On Sunday 15th June, 24 people gathered to hearof some of the adventures the miners workingon the Olympic Field in the 1960’s, 70s and 80’

experienced.

Gordon Traeger dug the first shaft on the field to a depthof 65 feet in 1964, after a tip from an aboriginal man bythe name of Mulgathing Jack who had seen floaters onthe ground a few miles out of town. Gordon and hisbrother-in-law worked what they called Jack's Flat forsome months but, finding less than $2000 for all theirdigging, they changed the name to Jack's Flop.

It was 1966 when Joe Rief, Big John (Yanni Bospouros),Gregoris Digaletos and Nick Nathanael sunk a shaft inthe area Traeger had worked and found opal after onlya few weeks work. Their find started a rush to the fieldwith pegs put in everywhere. It is widely believed thatit was these Greek boys who gave the field it’s name, after Mt Olympus. They made a considerable fortunefrom opal over the 14 years they spent mining in CooberPedy, however on Monday 3rd March 1980, only daysbefore two of them planned to fly home to Greece tomarry their sweethearts all three of the Greek men inthe partnership were killed in a cave - in on their claim. The tragedy shocked the close knit mining town.

Jeff Fergusson told us how they had dug their shafts to60 feet in 3 days by hand, and the cost of a 200 litre drumof fuel delivered on the field was $18.00 in the 1960’s.

John Dunstan who worked on the Olympic field in theyears 1968-69 told us how they sunk 29 shafts that yearby hand. His family had pegged four claims on the field, but gave one away to a friend who was lucky enough tofind $70,00.00 of opal in the claim he had been given.John’s family found nothing in their three claims! Suchare the fortunes of opal mining.

On a lighter note we heard how some miners of doubtful

integrity were working their own claim day and night, unbeknown to their trusting partners!

It has always been felt that the Olympic field really wasn’tgood for the town as it often showed good trace that ledminers to spend too long chasing it, only to bedisappointed. Olympic however, is also renowned to haveproduced some of the best opal found on the Coober PedyOpal Fields. A small group of miners continue to workon the Olympic Field to this day.

Judy UnderwoodCPHS

Historical Society and opal miners gathering at the Olympic Field

Bill’s brother Barney, a contract shearer and then asuccessful opal miner in the district in the 1960s, hasgiven the family name to Coober Pedy’s Lennon Street, and to one of the town’s hills. Bill’s father and uncleeach tried their hands at opal mining, but it was brotherBarney who struck it rich, once making a $50,000 strikein the days when that was a lot of money. With it hebought an expensive car, a large dugout and muchassistance for the family. He was not the only familymember who made a name in the north of SouthAustralia, with Bill’s cousin Bob establishing a farm inMelrose and later on a large machinery firm in PortAugusta. Bill’s father’s sister, Mary, was matron inHawker Hospital for many years.

Bill himself followed his father onto the land, but in doingso also fulfilled his maternal ancestry. His mother’speople and histories have populated the landscape of MtWilloughby and its environs for thousands of years, andBill’s present home incorporates many ancient campingsites and trails, intermingled with legendary figures fromDreamtime stories.

Charlie Paris, Special Dog Reporter([email protected])

EmDee, my little assistant has made an importantdiscovery about her lineage. It was a chance look

on the computer one night, which has her silly littlehead spinning around.

She now thinks she is part of the royal family. She waslooking at some photos, and because I have some insideknowlege she asked me is that mum and her. I had tolook twice myself. It did look like mum and EmDee. Itwas a lady with skinny legs and sensible shoes. That’s agood description of my mum any day. I read the articleto find out it was the Queen of England and one of herdogs.

Any normal dog would leave it at that, but oh no notEmDee! There has always been a mystery about her familyand where she came from. I said to her have you everbeen to England, “not really” she said. “There you areEmDee, you’re not related to the Queen or her dogs”, Itold her.

To settle this once and for all, I did some research to findout what type of dog breed she is. I remember years agowhen she went to the vet: Uncle Roger, for the first time.He is very good at picking out what breed a dog is or hasin them. He took one look at EmDee, shrugged, and saidhe couldn’t begin to guess what she could be.

I can understand that she is more than a little curiousabout where she has come from and what her background is.

She has gone overboard with this royal thing.

Since she saw the Queen’s dogs, EmDee has been wearinga crown around the house, saying things like “Off withyour head” and “We are not amused” Just to embarrassme even more she has been writing to the Queen andcalling her Aunty Liz and her husband Uncle Phil. EmDeewants copies of blood lines and birth certificates.

She wants to know if any dogs have been dognapped bygypsies and taken to the outback town of Coober Pedy asstatus symbols!

Believe me she can be so annoying that potential dognappersprobably wouldn’t bother.

When EmDee and I were looking into the Queen’s familywe found out she is related to over 20% of the populationof Britain. She is related to 33 of the Presidents of theUSA.

That was all EmDee needed to start living in her royalfantasy world again. If the Queen is related to so manypeople, could Em Dee be related to all of their dogs?

We looked at people that are related to the Queen to see ifany of their dogs look like EmDee, and yes they did.

Elvis Presley: 11th cousin once removed.Marilyn Monroe: 12th cousinBarack Obama: Yes, a cousin also.

You can judge for yourself, do their dogs look like EmDee?

I’ve noticed these features in EmDee, and will see if theycheck out with a Dorgi.Short legs with great big feet,Crazy fluffy tail,Nice soft coat,Loving, loyal, licking, annoying, all at the same time,Gets in the way,Not real bright,Bone thief,Disobedient,Barks at nothing,A bit smelly.Good company.

There used to be Dachshund guard dogs at The Big Winchand many Coober Pedy dogs years ago looked a bit sausagedog-like. Maybe EmDee is a descendant of these? Herbig feet may have evolved for climbing over soft mullockheaps. Maybe she has become a Desert Dachshund, anew breed. Actually a dash hound could be any dog whoputs their feet up on the dashboard in the car, Hmmm.

“Despite the compelling evidence, I am teaching Em Deeto accept her lot in life, and say after me. “Charlie Paris isa Princess and I am a Desert Dash Hound.”

When I looked into it the Queen has a favourite dog calledCorgis, and there is no way that my little mate looks likea Corgi. However, years ago, one of those naughty littleCorgis mated with a Dachshund that belonged to PrincessMargaret, and that produced a short legged, long bodied, hairy mutt that is called a DORGI.

This is a little close to home because I have called EmDeea DORKI many times. ( in a loving sister like way, that is).

by Charlie Paris -Reporter to the Rich and Famous

It was this chance sighting of the royal ‘dorgi’s’that gave EmDee the strong impression she wasconnected to many important canine bloodlines

“I can see Em Dee’s point when I compare thetwo dorgi’s with Em Dee’s photo. There is indeeda very, very strong resemblance!”

Here we have Em Dee’s compelling evidence of a relationship to the dogs of the Rich and Famous

It is widely acknowledged that Elvis sang suchsongs as “Love Me Tender”, “Hound Dog”, andmany others to his one true love pictured here in arare moment with his back up Dorgi singer. (Seethe resemblance?) If it is true that Elvis Presley is11th cousin once removed from the royal familythen so could Em Dee be connected.

This uncanny resemblance was another clincherfor me. If Marilyn is a 12th cousin to the royalsthen all of these dorgi’s must defintely be sharinga strong family gene!

“Has Em Dee’s bloodline even infiltrated theWhite House? There are simply too manycoincidences to ignore!”

It is said that there are only 6 degrees of separation in theworld, so for every 6 people that you meet 1 in 6 of themwill be related to someone that you are related to.
