Welcome To The Philmont Training Center - As most Scouters know, the Philmont Scout Ranch offers a top-notch backcountry camping experience. Every Scout and leader are given a wilderness experience that lasts a lifetime. - What you might not know is that Philmont is also the premier volunteer training facility for the BSA. - For 10 weeks in the summer and 1 week in the fall, the Philmont Training Center hosts the best volunteer training, led by the top leaders in the organization (selected by the national committees of the BSA) to deliver the latest information, strategies, and practices to make your local Scouting programs a success. - The week-long courses focus on every level of the Scouting experience, from council and district operations to strengthening local units. - AND it can be a family “event”

• Younger brother of the men who formed
Phillips 66
• Formed his own oil company
• Dreamed of ranch life in the west
• Amassed over 300,000 acres
• Philanthropic, especially after selling his
company
• Donated over 127,000 acres to the BSA to
strengthen a boy’s character and physical
growth
• Throughout his life and at his death, he
gave away over half of his fortune

Waite Phillips. - Fortune made from oil - Younger brother of the men who formed Phillips 66 - Formed his own oil company - Dreamed of ranch life in the west - Amassed over 300,000 acres - Philanthropic, especially after selling his independent company - Donated over 127,000 acres to the BSA with the intent of strengthening the moral character and physical growth of young men - Throughout his life and at his death, he gave away over half of his fortune

• The summer of 1950 saw the beginning of what PTC is today.
• The program took off when the PTC begin offering family program, in addition to adult training by top-notch leaders.

Villa Philmonte: Summer Home of Waite Phillips - Boy Scouts started hiking the land even before he gave the first gift in 1938. - From the beginning, Mr. Phillips suggested to Scout officials that adult training could be offered on the donated property. - PTC, as we know it today, began in 1950 - From the beginning, one of the things that made PTC unique was that conferences included a program for Scouting families

Professionally-Trained Program Staff PTC staff are fun and energetic. They undergo a rigorous, comprehensive training schedule for their respective departments (Handicraft, COPE, Dining Hall, etc). Group Leaders lead a full program for family members during the day while conferences take place.

Family Program Groups Family program is offered to all ages, even infant- and nursery-aged children. The schedule (see slide 13) allows for: - Both parents to be in classes - One parent to be in a conference and the spouse to be in the Silverados program, or - Single parents to bring their families

Age-Appropriate Activities Family program groups participate in age-appropriate activities. Different groups have different schedules. Some examples: - Archery and air-rifle shooting - COPE Course (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience; high- and low-ropes course) - Dutch Oven cooking - Handicraft projects and instructional classes - Hikes within the Philmont backcountry - Horse rides or pony rides - Nature hikes - An overnighter in the Philmont backcountry - Tours of the Kit Carson Museum (Rayado) and the Villa Philmonte

Mountain Treks- Backpacking expedition for 14-20 year olds.

- Hiking itineraries are customized according to the skills of the individuals
- Every night is spent at a staffed backcountry camp
- Participants engage in the same activities as traditional treks
NAYLE (National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience)
- A co-ed, outdoor-based training in leadership and teamwork for 14-20 year olds.
- One week program at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, the foothills of the Tooth of Time
- Motivates participants to help others succeed through servant leadership
- Encourages ethical decision-making based on the Scout Oath & Scout Law, using positive reinforcement, and practicing servant leadership throughout life.

Conference Week Schedule The week-long conference and family program schedule is designed to provide families with the optimum amount of fun together and in their respective groups. - Check-in takes place on Sunday afternoon. If you have a Mountain Trek participant, they will meet their Ranger and depart soon after your arrival. - All meals are served in shifts in one of the two PTC Dining Halls. -Conferences and family program run on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Depending upon your specific conference, Wednesday might have a morning class session and an afternoon family time. - Evening activities take place every night, such as Cobbler Night, Western Night, Movie Night, and Opening & Closing Program. - Saturday morning, the Mountain Trek participants return to base camp, and it is departure time from your week at PTC.

Available activities include (but are certainly not limited to): -Hiking: Some of Philmont’s popular trails are available to PTC participants…Lovers’ Leap, T-Rex Print, Urraca Loop, and the Trail of Deer Nature Trail. (The Tooth of Time hike is reserved for certain older-aged groups of the PTC family program, depending upon amount of participants in the Trailblazer program) - Philmont’s Museums: Villa Philmonte, Seton Museum, Kit Carson Museum (Rayado) - The Village of Cimarron: rich with history of the American West - The Town of Taos: known for art galleries and restaurants. Check out the white water rafting! - The Town of Raton: visit and hike the Capulin volcano, and see the Boy Scout Museum
