Conservative Minnesota Congress-

woman and Tea Party favorite

Michele Bachmann is leading the

pack of Republican presidential

candidates in a poll released late

last week by Communication Con-

cepts in Easton. Despite Bach-

mann’s lead among announced

candidates, most Republican pri-

mary voters — 29% — remain un-

decided in Pennsylvania.

The numbers show Bachmann is

preferred by 23% of Keystone

State Republicans, followed by

former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt

Romney with 16%, former Penn-

sylvania Sen. Rick Santorum with

13%, Texas Congressman Ron

Paul and former House Speaker

Newt Gingrich tied with 5% each.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Paw-

lenty is at 4%, and former pizza

company CEO Herman Cain regis-

ters 3%. Former Utah Gov. Jon

Huntsman, who recently entered

the race, has 1%.

While Bachmann is surging, Penn-

sylvania Republicans are asking

whether or not she will be able to

maintain her momentum. “Whether

or not she has staying power is the ques-

tion. Bachmann is the only candidate that

stirs passion in Pennsylvania Republican

voters at the moment. Her opponents, by

and large, including favorite son and fire-

brand conservative former Sen. Rick San-

torum, are not creating enthusiasm. This

suggests that as the field narrows, Bach-

mann’s lead could expand,” notes to John

Featherman, Republican commit-

teeman and former mayoral candi-

date.

Schuylkill Co. Republican Com-

mittee chairman and Party re-

former Joe Sterns views

Bachmann’s strong showing as a

sign Republican voters are ready

for a new direction. “That a rela-

tive unknown like Michele Bach-

mann would poll ahead of all other

GOP presidential candidates in

Pennsylvania, a state that’s histori-

cally been highly prone to the

‘Bob Dole Syndrome’, is a testa-

ment that we’re witnessing a rare

moment in politics, one in which

the people are thoroughly beat

down by politics as usual and

looking for someone who will end

it,” says Sterns.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Democ-

rats may see Bachmann’s nomina-

tion as instrumental to winning the

state for President Obama next

year. “I can’t imagine a better sce-

nario for the president to easily se-

cure reelection than by having the

Republicans nominate Congress-

woman Bachmann as his oppo-

nent,” says former Democratic

State Committeeman, attorney and

Party strategist Brett Stedman.

“President Obama’s strong show-

ing among moderates and inde-

pendents in 2008 would be

eclipsed in 2012 once the Con-

gresswoman’s extreme and contro-

versial statements reach the

mainstream media.”

The regional breakdowns show

Bachmann leading the other candi-

dates in every region of the state

except for Allegheny Co., where

Romney leads her by 10 points.

The Southwestern counties sur-

rounding Allegheny appear to be a

significant battleground as Bach-

mann and Romney are running

there at 29% and 22% respectively.

The story is slightly different in

Philadelphia, with Bachmann gar-

nering 22% compared to 12% for

Paul, 10% for Huntsman, and 6%

each for Cain, Romney and Paw-

lenty. The pivotal Southeastern re-

gion, including the vote-rich

Philadelphia collar counties, show

serious strength for Bachmann.

She presently earns 21% to Rom-

ney’s 16% in that area.

Locally, Democratic Ward Leader

Carol Jenkins of University City

agrees Obama would benefit from

facing Bachmann. “This would be

the dream for all adherents to the

Democratic Party to have Michele

Bachmann nominated because she

would have no chance to win a

general election in November

2012,” says Jenkins. “It is inter-

esting to see what traction such a

media savvy and media friendly

candidate like Bachmann is able to

generate.”

Republican Ward Leader Bill Petti-

grew of the 23rd and 54th Wards

and head of the GOP Riders organ-

ization, disagrees. “I believe the

American people are looking at a

Perry because unlike the other Re-

publicans in it, they haven’t lost an

election. They are a new fresh face

on the national scene and I believe

that’s what it will take to beat the

Obama Chicago machine,” con-

tends Pettigrew. He also suggests

that “the Republicans have an in-

credible AAA farm team in Chris

Christie, Paul Ryan and Marco

Rubio” that will help them build

for the future.

Pettigrew’s focus, however, re-

mains on the critical state and

local races coming in 2012. “As

much as I would love to defeat a

one-term Democrat for the presi-

dency, I am more excited by the

Congressional and Pennsylvania leg-

islative seats that will be in play

after redistricting,” he says.

Perhaps the most-surprising com-

ponent of the poll is the weakness

demonstrated by the only Pennsyl-

vanian in the race, former US Sen.

Rick Santorum. Santorum is run-

ning a distant third at 13%. Santo-

rum registers at just 10% in his

home county of Allegheny, 13% in

the central Pennsylvania “T” re-

gion where he traditionally per-

formed well in past statewide

races, and just 11% in the South-

west.

The poll was conducted on

Wednesday, Jun. 29, 2011 and sur-

veyed 622 Pennsylvania Republi-

can voters. The margin of error is

plus or minus 4%.

State Sen. Larry Farnese (D-

Phila.) announced yesterday UO

Real Estate, LLC, a division of

Urban Outfitters, Inc., has re-

ceived a $1.3 million State grant to

install a fuel-cell system that

would run off natural gas and cut

the company’s electricity usage in

half.

Farnese added the project will be

the first all-electric fuel-cell instal-

lation in Pennsylvania. The project

will result in an annual cost sav-

ings of approximately $407,949.

“Clean-energy innovation is in-

creasingly becoming a top priority

throughout the country and here in

Pennsylvania,” Farnese said. “This

cutting-edge project is a first for

Pennsylvania and could be the cat-

alyst for similar projects. These

clean energy projects help boost

Pennsylvania’s clean energy ef-

forts while providing cost savings

opportunities to local businesses. I

am pleased to announce this fund-

ing.”

UO Real Estate, LLC will work

with Bloom Energy to install a

600kW fuel cell system at their fa-

cility in the Philadelphia Navy

Yard.

The system will produce electric-

ity from natural gas with limited

emissions, which Farnese said will

minimize any environmental im-

pact from the system.

The funding for the project was

awarded through the Common-

wealth Financing Authority Alter-

native and Clean Energy Program.

Unveiling The Restored Gardens

Of The Rodin Museum

Leaders of the city’s cultural and philanthropic com-

munities will celebrate tomorrow morning the reju-

venation of the Rodin grounds and host tours of the

courtyard and exterior gardens, which now enhance

the entire block between 21st and 22nd Streets on the

Parkway.

The three-year collaborative project restores the

site’s harmony of art and nature. Bastille Day was

chosen for the unveiling to honor French sculptor

Auguste Rodin, as well as Paul Cret and Jacques

Gréber, original architects of the Rodin Museum and

garden and the Parkway.
