President’s Message Hello Fellow Genealogist,

Hope everyone had a safe and Happy Holiday season. The Phelps County Genealogical Society has new officers to start off the New Year: President-Reba Fryer, Vice President-Phyllis Cooley, Treasurer-Bill Silleck, Recording Secretary-Mike Lusher, and Corresponding Secretary-Ruth Adair.

For those of you who don’t know me, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have lived in the Rolla area my entire life as has my husband Darren of 22 years. We have three children, two sons 19 and 16, and a 3 year old daughter. I started doing research about 15 years ago and joined the Society about a year later. I was not at all interested in my roots until I was asked to straighten out a problem with a cemetery and that is what got me going. Someone asked me how do you know who is buried in that spot; you were not around then. True, but I did have the documentation that said who was buried in that particular spot (the person buried there had died before I was born). However, they used to keep what is referred to as burial permits. So my research began. Why not find out who these people were that had died before I was born? What was their story and how did they get here? Needless to say, I was hooked.

I would like to take this time to thank the past Officers and volunteers for all the hard work and dedication that they contributed this past year, you know who you are. Some of you went above and beyond your roles as members and officers. It has been a very busy year for the Society, with the move across the parking lot to our new location in the Old Phelps County Courthouse. Shelves had to be made or put together, furniture acquired from various donors, and phones donated to make it a workable library. THANKS TO ALL. A special thanks to Sheila Wood for pulling it all together. We now have a very welcoming room for researchers and visitors to come to.

With the New Year have come some new items as well. We now have a new copier which was donated by a very dear person who saw a need and met that need for the society. We have also received by donation the new accounting software for the treasurer to provide the requested reports for the members. A very BIG THANKS to these two contributors. These items will provide a lot of benefit for the Phelps County Genealogical Society. Hope to see you all at the meetings in the future. Reba Fryer PCGS President

PCGS Quarterly − Volume 22 Number 1 − February 2006 3

Editor’s Message Hello all. As your new Quarterly editor, it is only right that I give you a little information about myself. My name is Steven Michael Lusher, but everyone calls me Mike. Only the IRS calls me Steven. I am an employee and a student at the University of Missouri-Rolla. I live in Rolla and have been a Phelps County resident since 1993. I have been a member of PCGS since the beginning of 2000. After my dad passed away in 1994, I began digging into our family history. Lo and behold, the Lusher side of the family took up residence in Phelps and Crawford counties sometime in the mid 1850’s. So moving from Franklin to Phelps county has been kind of a “homecoming” for me. Anyway, I’m fairly new to genealogy but I really enjoy it…discovering something new about your ancestors is exciting. I’m looking forward to the challenge of putting together the Quarterly in such a manner that folks who read it may also experience the joy and excitement of discovery.

Phelps County, Missouri Old Marriage Licenses/Certificates

The old marriage licenses/certificates listed below

may be claimed by a descendant of the participants.

This is a continuation of the old marriage licenses/certificates published in the 2002 quarterly number 3. Many of these licenses were claimed years ago, but the remaining old licenses were given to the Phelps County Genealogical Society so that we might find the family members who would like to have them. All you need to do to claim the license of your ancestor is to send a Number 10 (approx, 4-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches) self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with one first Class stamp (currently 37 cents). The licenses will be given away on a first come, first served basis, so someone may have already claimed the license you are interested in. The address is: Phelps County Genealogical Society P.O. I include it because it is one of the very first pieces of genealogical material encountered when I started my family research. Fairview Church was organized in 1878 by Rev. N. H. Buck, on the Salem road, five miles southeast of Rolla. They now have fifty-one members, who have been under the pastoral charge of Revs. Buck, I. Lunbeck, D. S. Dunlovey, Revelle, Poole, and I. J. K. Lunbeck. Their first members were the Hales, Lushers, Parks, Morris, and Castleman. They use a log school-house. The church was reorganized by Rev. B. F. Pool in 1886.

Glimpses. . .75 years ago…1931 From The Rolla Herald, Thursday February 5, 1931

HOTEL EDWIN LONG Hotel Edwin Long is the name of the new hotel being completed at the corner of Eight

and Pine streets in this city. This action was decided upon last Thursday at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Nation Building Company, with Mr. Aston, who has leased the hotel.

Many names have been suggested for this new hotel, but after considering everything, it was decided that it was fit and proper to name the hotel in honor of the man who had made his wealth in Rolla and whose wealth had made it possible to build this finest structure in Rolla.

Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Long came in Rolla almost with the beginning of Rolla. Every dollar they possessed was made in Rolla. They left their fortune to their only son, Edwin Long, who was successful in doubling his inheritance. Edwin Long’s sons are the financial backers of the hotel building. It was not their suggestion, however, that the hotel be named in honor of their father. It was the unanimous expression of the Board of Directors of the Building Company to honor the man who had been a former President of the National Bank, who had served the people as mayor of Rolla several terms, whose wealth had always been directed toward the upbuilding and development of Rolla. And thus it will bear his name.

PERSONALS Mrs. Jenson Tyson and Miss Ada Howell were in St. Louis Saturday---Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Smith were in St. Louis the first of this week---Mrs. S. L. SALTS ASSAULTS RUCKER As County Clerk B. H. Rucker was on his way to the Court House to attend the meeting of the County Court Tuesday morning, he was halted by Representative W. J. Salts, who began to upbraid Rucker for circulating statements regarding him (Salts) and Hohenschild relative to the recent investigation of the School of Mines. Rucker tried to pass the matter of pleasantly and told Salts that he did not care to discuss the subject with him but Salts followed up and denounced Rucker as a liar, which Rucker resented with a blow in Salt’s face with his fist. Salts at once jerked a 38-caliber revolver from his pocket which Rucker seized and held and made him put it back in his pocket until bystanders and City Marshal Dan McMasters rushed and separated them and Marshal McMasters took charge of the pistol and placed both under arrest. The trial of Salts for carrying concealed weapons will come up before Mayor Koch Friday.

Whist was the game, and Miss Mary J. McCrae and Miss Ida Smith winning the high score received the prizes, while Miss Lucille Harrison carried off the consolation. Delicious refreshments were served.

From The Rolla Weekly Herald, Thursday February 24, 1881

NOT GUILTY The Herald published a rumor a short time since that Rev. Jack Zeigler, pastor of the colored Baptist church in this city, had been refused the pulpit of that church for practices not strictly in accordance with the scripture. The charge was investigated by the church, and the Rev. Mr. Zeigler is fully exonerated, as the following report handed me by the Elder, shows: Rolla, Mo., Feb. 21st, 1881 It has been reported that the members of the colored Baptist church, of which the Rev. Jackson Zeigler has been pastor for the past ten years, did not admit him to the pulpit, and on this day the church convened together and pronounced that report all false, and to the injury of the colored preachers, and we would be glad for the people to read this for themselves, and to the ones who reported to the press, may the God of Heaven give him his just pay when he comes in the next world. Done by order of the church. Rev. James H. Chambers, Missionary of the Union Association.
