Getting into the Spirit of Tasmania

IF you’ve ever thought of taking your owncar to Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania, doit. The voyage across Bass Strait for the mostpart is quite a pleasant experience. I’d flown to Launceston to pick up a friend’scar to drive it to Sydney. Having not done the ferry trip before, Ididn’t know what to expect, as it was darkwhen my partner and I drove into Devonport. Where’s the terminal? No problem. Thereare signs everywhere and it’s very easy tofind. The boarding process was made simple bythe helpful and friendly shore staff whoguided us up a ramp and into the belly of thebig ship, Spirit of Tasmania. Two things you need to do: You must be atthe terminal no later than 45mins prior todeparture, otherwise you won’t get on, andremember the deck number where you leaveyour car, or you’ll have trouble locating itwhen you leave the ship in Melbourne onarrival. Several did, blocking others who couldn’tdrive off until the forgetful guests found theirvehicle. We were allocated an inside private cabin.Normally we’d have asked for a porthole cabinbut saw no point in paying extra as you don’tsee anything on the overnight crossing. The ship sailed on time at 7.30pm and soonthe public areas were buzzing, especially theSpirit Bar where AFL fans were watching a livematch on a big flat-screen TV. It was pleasing to see that drinks weren’toverpriced – you can’t bring your own boozeon board - a glass of fine Tassie Pinot Noir wasonly $8.50, however meals aren’t so cheap. We had a late lunch in Launceston andweren’t that hungry, but we thought, let’s goto the fine dining Leatherwood Restaurantand we’ll have just the one course for dinner, but to our dismay, we found that you had toorder a minimum of two courses at a pricey$56 pp, drinks extra. The place was almost deserted. Wonderwhy?

This month CW correspondentBarry Matheson utilised theservices of the iconic Spirit ofTasmania ferry and reviewedthe experience for our readers.

    A Diamond for his princess

LOVE was certainly in the air when MarkFerres and his partner Barb stepped onboardDiamond Princess, with the former preparingto propose to his beloved during Diamond’sformal night. Dalian to score new terminal THE Chinese port of Dalian, located on theYellow Sea at the southern tip of LiaodongPeninsula (the most northern ice-free port inChina), is planning on revitalising its facilities,in a bid to lure cruise ship business. According to reports, the Port has partneredwith the developer Dalian Port Real Estate, and will makeover two of its existing piers intoa development comprised of retail outlets, hotels, apartments and office areas, as well asa new cruise terminal. The plans are currently under wraps and indevelopment, with architects and designerscurrently working out the layout and look ofthe project.

The Captains Table Restaurant was morereasonable, with hot and cold dishes,canteen-style at $30 a head. Not surprisingly, there was a queue to get in. Needing directions to find the freeway fromMelbourne to Sydney, the Tourist Office onboard was helpful, but charged 50 cents for aphotocopy of a map showing the way, anun-necessary rip-off that leaves a bad taste. Our cabin was clean, with shower/toilet andcomfortable bed. The crossing was quiet and remarkablysmooth, given that Bass Strait can be prettyrough at times. If you want to splurge and travel in style,Deluxe Cabins located at the front of the shipare priced at $1,041 per couple including car& booking fee. Porthole Twin cabin Flexi fare is $789 percouple with car, Ocean Recliners for thebudget conscious cost $353 for two peopleand there are four berth cabins for those whowant to share with strangers costing $264 pp. Fares do fluctuate from day to day. The entire staff on the ship deserve a wordof praise. They were wonderful. The ship pulled in to the Port of Melbourneon time at 6am and we drove off soon aftereasily finding the Hume Highway to Sydney, thanks to our 50 cent map.

Iceland: All Steamed Upby: Roderick Eime aboard Ponant’s Le Boreal

The Icelandic horse is an attractive and good-naturedanimal and much loved by natives. I’m told they are also tasty.

Volcanism is the basis of Iceland’s creation and is on showat locations like Krysuvik.

Nowadays when you think of Iceland, you’re more likely to recalla land of financial catastrophes and unpronounceable volcanoesthan a vast Arctic island twice the size of Switzerland with aromantic Nordic heritage and strong, resourceful inhabitants. Arriving by aircraft will give you an immediate idea this is noordinary land. There is no passport control and no obviouscustoms barriers. The airline, Iceland Air, operates a fleet ofageing Boeing 757s and must be the largest single operator of thisorphan type from Seattle. The cabin crew are attractive females inclassic uniforms who, I’m sure, could evacuate the entire aircraftin 90 seconds even if all the passengers were unconscious. It’s abit of a bumpy landing, but then the windsock looks more like aset-square. I first heard of Reykjavik when the great Boris Spassky andBobby Fischer had their cold war chess showdown in 1972. Iimagined a land encased in a vast glacier and wondered why thesetwo chess masters would go to this unlikely place for a chessmatch on a card table in a giant ice field. The naming of Iceland and its massive neighbour, Greenland, isalso a story in itself. Iceland is green and Greenland is one massiveglacier, albeit a rapidly melting one these days. As a primer, the rolling screen on the Iceland Air seatback (theone you get when you don’t pay for the inflight movies) tells youIcelanders enjoy a high standard of living and with most of the300,000 nationals possessing a university degree yet the samepercentage continue to believe in elves. Makes you wonder whowas running the banks a few years back. The Prime Minister is a

woman and so is the head of the church and, so my guide tells mewith a smirk, men soon hope to have equality. Iceland commands a healthy tourism industry with visitorsarriving both by land and sea. While land-based visitors mightindulge in some hiking and climbing in the lunar-like landscape, seaborne arrivals will typically arrive at the wharf in Hafnarfjörður,the historic harbour which once housed Iceland’s famous fleet oftiny fishing boats and is home to the island’s mysterious elves. It’s easy to overlook some of the dinky little houses and folkmuseums along the wharf in your rush to get amongst the lavafields and opal-hued steam baths. Such is the imperative ofmodern tourism. But the iconic Blue Lagoon thermal baths are a great success, especially when you consider the whole thing began with a leakypower station. Today it seems every postcard and brochure willfeature these lurid ponds dotted with willing bathers lolling aboutin the steamy overflow. The gift shop must rival the island’sfishing industry for foreign exchange, with pricey salves, lotions, designer wear and trinkets marching out the door with theconstant stream of towel-toting tourists. Cruise tourists will typically embark on a range of shore toursthat include such natural attractions as the world’s originalgeyser, called Geysir, or Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall). TheReykjanes Peninsula is where buses head for the Blue Lagoonthermal spas in the Krysuvik area. The main shore tour operatorsare www.atlantik.is and www.re.is. Ask your ICCA agent for cruises that include Iceland.
