Black History Month

Black History month is an annual celebration in

the UK of the contributions made by black

people to society. Throughout October, the

History Department is looking at 2000 years of

black British history with our students. We are

also developing our curriculum and will explore

more of the history of the contribution of BAME

(Black Asian Minority Ethnic) groups. Next week Ms Indra will give a school

assembly on the issue.

To find out more about it, visit https://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/

Ms Indra’s book recommendation is: 100 Great Black Britons by Patrick Vernon & Angelina Osborne.

Published in 2020.

One of the incidents students will study is the 1963 Bristol bus boycott.

In 1963, a man named Paul Stevenson

organised a campaign calling for people to

stop using the buses in Bristol because the

bus company had refused to hire black and

Asian people. At the time, there was a lot

of racism in the UK – when people are

treated badly or unfairly because of their

skin colour, culture or nationality. The

protest lasted for 4 months until the bus

company changed its hiring policy. This

protest led to the UK law being changed in

1965 to make racism in public places illegal.

Achievements and Successes

If your child has achieved any significant successes / awards / achievements we would love to hear

about them and share them more widely in Headlines as appropriate. e.g. sports; music; new skills etc.

Please email [email protected] and include a paragraph about their achievement and

a photo of the relevant event / ceremony /prize. Thank you.

Year 11

Wellbeing

A Space To Be… is a wellbeing project for young people aged 14–18. Workshops are based around

the collections of local museums and your child will work with artists using objects as inspiration for

making art, poetry and stories.

This is not art therapy, simply a way to give young people who are stressed, anxious or generally

feeling low some time out in a friendly, safe and supportive environment. Most importantly – they

don’t need any experience – everyone is welcome including complete beginners. It is NOT a formal

art class.

The workshops will start after half term and run until January and will be delivered online only until

at least Christmas. They are free and young people will take part in 8 sessions of 1.5 hrs each from

4.30pm to 6.00pm working in groups of around 10. Young people can try it out for a session before

making a final decision up until week 4.

How do I find out more?

A Space To Be… is managed by Herts County Council and funded by the National Lottery Heritage

Fund.
