    FIRST READING 1 Kings 19.1-4, 8-15a

A reading from the first book of KingsNow Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all theprophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, May thegods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not makeyour life like that of one of them. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he

came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went adays journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it andprayed that he might die. I have had enough, Lord , he said. Take my life; I amno better than my ancestors. So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened bythat food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, themountain of God. He replied, I have been very zealous for the Lord GodAlmighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, andput your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they

are trying to kill me too. The Lord said, Go out and stand on the mountain inthe presence of the Lord , for the Lord is about to pass by. Then a great andpowerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord ,but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but theLord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lordwas not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it,he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah? He replied, I have

been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected yourcovenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. Iam the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too. The Lord said tohim, Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When youget there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

    SECOND READING Galatians 3.10-14, 23-29

A reading from Pauls letter to the GalatiansFor all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: Cursedis everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the

Law. Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because therighteous will live by faith. The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says,The person who does these things will live by them. Christ redeemed us fromthe curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: Cursed iseveryone who is hung on a pole. He redeemed us in order that the blessing givento Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we

might receive the promise of the Spirit. Before the coming of this faith, we wereheld in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would berevealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justifiedby faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. So inChrist Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who werebaptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew norGentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one inChrist Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abrahams seed, and heirs

    according to the promise.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

    GOSPEL ACCLAMATIONAlleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL Luke 8.26-39A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. Ashe stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a longtime he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs.

When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice,What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, donot torment me, for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out ofthe man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and boundwith chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by thedemon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, What is your name? He said,Legion; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order themto go back into the abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was

feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave thempermission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, andthe herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When theswineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in thecountry. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came

to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feetof Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who hadseen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had beenhealed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes askedJesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boatand returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might

be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to your home, and declarehow much God has done for you. So he went away, proclaiming throughout thecity how much Jesus had done for him.

For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflections on the ReadingsLast weeks gospel reading demonstrated the power of forgiveness leading totransformation and new ways of being. It seems that wherever Jesus and hisfollowers go social and religious etiquette is flouted in the interests ofmarginalised people. In todays gospel story the theme continues. Jesus breaks all

conventions and niceties to restore an occasionally mentally deranged man to hiscommunity - and the good people of Gerasenes get a bit twitchy. I state theobvious when I say change to the status quo can engender anxiety in the human,Yet there is something else at work here and if we stay with the present andbreathe things can be different. The divine lure of God is always inviting us toparticipate in beauty, truth, adventure, zest, peace, and love -- and that same lureinvites us to recognize those same qualities in others. There is no beauty, truth, adventure, zest, peace, or love in the deliberate isolation of a troubled soul. Butthere is an abundance of those qualities when we learn to set aside ourpreconceived notions about others, and bridge the gap of isolation. This is howJesus chose to act toward this troubled man lurking in the cemetery of a Gentiletown. Jesus senses the mans vulnerability, and he enters into it. He chooses toassociate with, and converse with, this man who (in so many peoples eyes) wasntworth the effort. The fact that the people of this region met this kind of bridge-building with fear is not so surprising. Jesus had helped them see that this manwas not all that different than they were. Or -- perhaps more to the point -- Jesushelped them see that they were not all that different from this man who was

running around naked among the tombs and at times behaving in bizarre ways!Whichever way they saw it, they didnt much appreciate having the informationbrought to their attention, so they told Jesus to be on his way. But the Gerasenesalso didnt much like Jesus ability to transform the status quo into something newand unfamiliar; they much preferred to keep things as they once had been. It wassafer that way. But creative transformation is a threat to the status quo. Those wholike things to stay just the way they are tend to be those who work againstprogress, inclusion, and anything which calls for any kind of evolution. Living in

the status quo is another way of letting the past shape the present and the futurein a negative way. To live in this way is to live in fear; and fear can block ouracceptance of other people and be welcoming of those who seem strange, different or disturbed. This story invites all of us to open our eyes to see thevariety of diversity in the human experience as being a blessing, rather than aliability. The message and example of Jesus is to always widen our circle ofacceptance, and to celebrate the diversity of the human experience with a heart ofcompassion and solidarity.
