THE COLLECTUndaunted you seek the lost, O God, exultant you bring home the found: touchour hearts with grateful wonder at the tenderness of your forbearing love; grantus delight in the mercy that has found us; and bring all to rejoice at the feast offorgiven sinners. FIRST READING Jeremiah 4.11 -12, 22-28A reading from the prophet Jeremiah

    At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, A scorching wind from thebarren heights in the desert blows towards my people, but not to winnow orcleanse; a wind too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce myjudgments against them. My people are fools; they do not know me. They aresenseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; theyknow not how to do good. I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty;

and at the heavens, and their light was gone. I looked at the mountains, and theywere quaking; all the hills were swaying. I looked, and there were no people; everybird in the sky had flown away. I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert; all itstowns lay in ruins before the Lord , before his fierce anger. This is what the Lordsays: The whole land will be ruined, though I will not destroy it completely. Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above grow dark, because I havespoken and will not relent, I have decided and will not turn back.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 139.1-5, 12-18Response: The Lord is the refuge of the poor.

The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.'Corrupt are they, and abominable in their wickedness;there is no one that does good. The Lord has looked down from heavenupon the children of earth,

to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks after God............R But every one has turned back;all alike have become corrupt:there is none that does good; no, not one.

Have they no knowledge, those evildoers, who eat up my people as if they ate breadand do not call upon the Lord? There shall they be in great fear;for God is in the company of the righteous....................................R

Though they would confound the counsel of the poor,

yet the Lord shall be their refuge.O that Israel's salvation would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, then will Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad..........................................R

    SECOND READING 1 Timothy 1. 1-2, 12-19a

A reading from the first letter of Paul to TimothyPaul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Saviour and ofChrist Jesus our hope, To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy andpeace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank Christ Jesus ourLord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointingme to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and aviolent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. Thegrace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and lovethat are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance:Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. Butfor that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ

Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who wouldbelieve in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Timothy,my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once madeabout you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, holding on tofaith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have sufferedshipwreck with regard to the faith.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Luke 15. 1-10A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And thePharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomessinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable: Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine inthe wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he hasfound it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, hecalls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for Ihave found my sheep that was lost. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy inheaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people whoneed no repentance. Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one ofthem, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she findsit? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, saying,

Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    Reflections on the Readings

Much of the destruction and evil in our world is the result of ignorance and thefailure to recognise Gods presence and purpose so say the Lectionary readingsthis week. The suffering and injustice that this causes is an offense to God thatarouses Gods anger (Jeremiah) but, God is gracious, seeking out what is lost asin Jesus parables in Lukes Gospel and healing, restoring and forgiving those

who have done wrong (as in Davids Psalm and Pauls letter to Timothy). Morethan this, God so changes those on whom God pours Gods grace that theybecome agents of Gods grace and healing to others as Paul testified abouthimself. The other theme in the readings is the word lost, which has come tomean those who are not part of the church, or who dont believe in Christ as wedo, but in the biblical sense, there are still many lost people in the Church. If werehonest, we all have parts of us that are lost, and we all need to be found more andmore. In the light of this, our calling in Christ is to confront the foolishness, ignorance and evil within ourselves, and allow Christ to find, save and transformus. Its a tough and challenging thing to acknowledge the places where we areunjust or destructive, and to do the work of repentance in order to be changed, which is integral to our calling as people of the way. The tough questions, then, this week are these: Where do we still need to confront injustice and lostness inourselves? and In what ways can we offer ourselves to be agents of healing, graceand change in our communities?
