2014 Lotto Central League Petone FC vs Western Suburbs

Capital 3Petone FC vs Stokes Valley

Match Programme Saturday 23rd August

Hello and welcome to Memorial Park for our last Central League game for the 2014 season. Western Suburbs will provide another very tough challenge for Grant Plumbing Petone as we look to end the season on a high.

It is difficult not to use clichés, however this season has been a real case of what might have been. Soft goals and inconsistent performances have resulted in a mid table finish but this doesn’t reflect the quality we possess. The highlight was undoubtedly ending Miramar’s unbeaten season a few weeks ago and while performances of that level were sadly too few, it showcased the quality and potential this squad does have. Hopefully a good sign for next season! We continued to introduce and ease young players into 1st team football and their development has been a real success. It was also pleasing to see the response from some of our more ‘senior’ players who embraced the changes and worked damn hard. I believe we are capable of finishing much higher in the league next season and I know we have the talent and desire to do so.

Thank you to everyone involved with 1st team football this year. Your hard work and dedication has been greatly appreciated by everyone at Petone FC.

Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend. Remember, play hard but play fair.

Look, I know he hasn’t been gone for very long, but I thought if we got him to reminisce he might remember all the good times at Petone and come back from silly old Australia. He is only a season of games away from becoming a centurion after all. I know you’ll all agree this season hasn’t been the same without the two older “Blairs” so let’s see how Jono has been getting on without the Blues...

How long did you play/were you involved with the Club?

I have been bleeding blue my whole life until this year when I made the jump across the ditch. I started when I was 5 or 6 and I’ve been part of the first team for the past 4 or 5 years, though my memory doesn’t even go back that far haha.

Favourite memories of Petone Football Club?

Favourite memories would have to be all the events at the club and having a good laugh after each game.

Which players stood out during your time here?

There would have to be a few players that have stood out over my time here. Michael Pickering, Richard McLay and Leighton Arraj just to name a few. It’s been awesome being able to play with all my mates all the way through juniors and seniors. We had some great combos through the years and they’re just all round great players and mates.

Where do you currently live and what are you doing?

I currently live in Sydney, Australia and am testing my skills as a carpenter for Bellvarde constructions. They are a high-end residential building company and I’m loving it!!

What is your involvement in football today?

Just finished a season with Pagewood FC, it was a very physical league but if you know me, I thrive on that! It wasn’t quite at the same level as home but was still a good challenge. If I stick around long enough I will be trying to find a team that plays at a higher level next season.

What was your career highlight? Any regrets?

Highlight by far would be winning under 19’s with a great bunch of lads. My only regret would be missing out getting a golden boot award for the club when the great Sticky took the trophy off me after his playoff goals, after I had received it at prizegiving!

Who was your footballing idol when you were growing up?

Not a 100% sure, I never really followed any one player in particular. I just love playing with the boys back home, having a laugh and a good coldy after the game.

You may have recently seen me doing Facebook score updates on my cousin Richard McLay’s fancy telephone. Why am I not using my phone? Well I’m currently hacking away with a 1998 Nokia Silver Magic which doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles I’m afraid. So this obviously got me thinking maybe the Club should pay to get me a nice new phone? Doesn’t have to be anything super flash, certainly nothing more than $3k. This way I don’t have to pester young Richard and also see the grotty Snapchats he receives from his many female friends. Honestly some of the images coming into that phone are quite outrageous. He’s a lover not a fighter ol’ Richie!

Now the EPL has started and Manchester United are looking quality! Oh hang on… That’s what I wish was the case but yeah not the prettiest of starts under Mr van Gaal. Very sad to see Nani off on loan to Sporting Lisbon isn’t it? One of the all time great players, he really enjoyed belting the ball high into the stands at Old Trafford. Such a frustrating player and you get the feeling that Wayne Rooney wanted to physically assault him at times. Now if we can just get rid of Anderson, Young, Jones, Smalling…exciting times ahead! The main thing that caught my eye from the first round was the very sensual through ball by Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea’s second. That pass was sexier than Karen Olsen reading the weather on TV One..wooooo yeahhh! Also great to see the 7 foot 6 Chris Wood get a tidy finish too. He is a very big lad isn’t he? I’m still confident I could take him in a street brawl down Bracken.

I won’t be joining you all today as it is my daughter Frankie’s first birthday. I am going to get heavily involved in sausage rolls, cake and, probably, too many beers. I hope the Mighty Blues can get a win and end this season on a high. Like Liverpool fans love to say “next year is our year”.

C’mon the Blues!
