The woman’s response is straightforward and perhaps holds somewhat of a challenge in it: “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” The revelation of who Jesus is begins right away; it’s a revelation that progresses as this dialogue continues: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman then asks the next obvious and logical thing: “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well i s deep. Where do you get that living water?” Well, the conversation continues and ultimately the woman finds that Jesus is none other than the Messiah himself. And in the midst of this revelation, the woman herself is also revealed. Jesus tells her, “Go, call your husband.” When she replies that she has no husband, her marital history is laid out in its entirety: “You have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” Now we don’t know from this passage if the woman has been the object of serial tragedies, if her five husbands died in succession. And stories that demonize her, implying that no respectable woman would come to the well in the heat of the day, are less than helpful. But what we are told is that when the woman goes back to the city to tell people about her encounter with Jesus, she says predominantly one thing: “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done!” What this Samaritan woman experienced at the well was not primarily judgment, but the grace of being known. Jesus offers her living water at the same moment that he acknowledges her as she truly isthe Samaritan woman is both fully known and fully loved. Well, we find this same beauty in a church family, a place where we risk knowing each other and being known by each other. In a world that teaches us to fear rejection and failure, the grace of being both fully known (with all of our faults) and fully accepted and loved is a rare commodity indeed. And when and where we see this grace in the Church (or anywhere else), it is nothing less than a reflection of God’s love for us. Such a reflection is especially important in the season of Lent—the part of the church year when we’re called to a period of prayer, self-examination, and repentance. For self-examination requires a willingness to be vulnerable and honestto see ourselves with all of our gifts and all of our faults. And we are only able to do that in light of the fact that God’s love for us always precedes any worthiness on our own part. Knowing ourselves as known and loved is really the only way we can have the courage to see ourselves as we truly are, and so to change those things that need to be changed. So, during this season of Lent, may we experience the grace of being known. May we come and see a man who tells us everything we have ever done, and may that encounter change us forever. Yours in Christ, Teri

"From the Peter's Pence archives--March 2009"

Dear St. Peter’s Church Family,

One of the truly wonderful things at St. Peter’s is the honesty that marks so many of the relationships in this place. People are known for who they truly are, and loved and accepted just as they are. I’ve been touched to see so many examples of this in our life together. This “grace of being known” always brings to mind for me the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, a story found in the fourth chapter of the gospel of John.

In this famous meeting of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, a striking intimacy marks the exchange between Jesus and the woman. “Give me a drink of water,” Jesus says. The woman’s response is straightforward and perhaps holds somewhat of a challenge in it: “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” The revelation of who Jesus is begins right away; it’s a revelation that progresses as this dialogue continues: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman then asks the next obvious and logical thing: “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?”

Well, the conversation continues and ultimately the woman finds that Jesus is none other than the Messiah himself. Jesus offers her living water at the same moment that he acknowledges her as she truly is—the Samaritan woman is both fully known and fully loved.

For self-examination requires a willingness to be vulnerable and honest—to see ourselves with all of our gifts and all of our faults.

Sunday Morning Adult Christian Education 8:45 am - Early Christianity: The Experience of the Divine (Library) Early Christianity is viewed as it appears in the New Testament and other early literature. The emphasis is upon religious experience, and what accounts for its continuing strength in what is called a "Post Christian World." What were the forces driving the phenomenal growth of Christianity in the first century? How did religious experience take on new forms as Christianity developed during the next three centuries? A video lecture series presented by Professor Luke Johnson of Emory University is used as the source of discussion for this series. 9:50 am Adult Forum (Library) Gerard Manley Hopkins was a late-Victorian poet whose work combined a traditional spiritual impulse with innovative poetic techniques. While initially challenging, even eccentric, his poetry crackles with energy and "strikes like lightnings" in its epiphanies. This three-week introduction will survey his poetic moods, from celebration to lament. Led by Jim Fowler.

The Steele Hays Memorial Labyrinth

The Steele Hays Memorial Labyrinth that will be built this spring in the courtyard of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church pays tribute to a kind, compassionate man who dedicated much of his life to justice. Steele served on the Arkansas Supreme Court from 1981 to 1995. He also served on the state Court of Appeals as one of the original members appointed by Governor Bill Clinton when the court was first created. In addition, he served as a Pulaski County circuit court judge in 1969-70, appointed by Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Before joining the bench, Hays had a distinguished career as a lawyer in Little Rock with Spitzberg, Mitchell & Hays, and served as secretary-treasurer of the Arkansas Bar Association. Steele also served as chancellor for the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas, and as president of the National Conference of Christians & Jews (Arkansas Chapter), Arkansas Lung Association, Youth Home, Inc., Arkansas Rice Depot, Conway and Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Clubs, as chairman of the Arkansas Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and on numerous other charitable boards. After retiring, he pursued his long-standing interest in Abraham Lincoln, researched and wrote many essays on Lincoln and presented these to scores of groups around the state. Steele was a great lover of birds and may have built enough birdhouses to house half the state’s bluebird population. He was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Conway. What is a Labyrinth? A labyrinth is an ancient pattern that dates back 5,000 years and is found in many cultures throughout the world. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path that winds its way to the center. Walking a labyrinth is a form of prayerful meditation. Labyrinths are used world-wide to center the mind, ground the body, promote reflection, and open the heart to transformation. How Can I Help Make the Steele Hay Memorial Labyrinth a Reality? If you would like to help make this labyrinth a reality, donations made be made payable to The St. Peter’s Labyrinth Fund and mailed to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 925 Mitchell Street, Conway, Arkansas, 72034.

Dear Family, It has been a long time, hasn't it? Far too many Sundays have gone by since I was last able to worship with you all. I miss that very much. Occasionally, I have an experience in worship that reminds me of my home. Most recently, I was at a service where the melody to sing, "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord..." resonated with me and I swore in that moment with my eyes closed I was standing right in the midst of you back in Arkansas, back in Conway, right back in the pews of St. Peter's. How I wish that had been so. It has been a long road this last year and a half and lot has happened. I moved from Arkansas over a year ago to serve in a young adult ministry of the national church called the Episcopal Service Corps. My time was spent living and ministering in the Baltimore, MD area. I had the great opportunity to work in parish and with a people much like that found at St. Peter's. I was the director of their youth ministry as well as spending part of my time working with a local community center's after-school program. This year was very fruitful as it has helped me to discern a call to work with youth. To that effect at the end of this previous service year, I began to consider my next steps. I began to look for work in full-time youth ministry but I had also applied for a second year in the Episcopal Service Corps. As God would have it, I have found myself in Boston serving another year in a parish again very similar to St. Peter's. I have been fortunate that the Episcopal Church no matter where I am always feels like home, even if it is not St. Peter's in the flesh. This year, I am working as what has been titled, "Pastoral Assistant." I do a lot of things under this title. I mostly help with worship throughout the week. From setting the alter table, to teaching and coordinating Sunday School, to regularly preaching. I also have been able to continue to do ministry with youth as the church shares a youth group with another local Episcopal parish. I am truly blessed. As of now, I have about four and half months left in my term. We end in June. There is a second-year track here in the Boston program. It is a possibility but as for me I am still discerning. As many college students in Conway are prone to talk about, it may be time to get out into the real world. I believe God is pulling my heart to just take the plunge. All of this of course is dependent on if I can find full-time ministry positions. I will keep looking and praying. And I will do this all, as we Episcopalians are oft to say, "With God's help." I wanted to write to you for two reasons. First, it has been too long and I know some of you must have wondered what I've been up to. Only a little trouble, I promise. The other is a bit more practical and boring. Not surprising to any of us, the program I am currently in as well as all types of programs like the Episcopal Service Corps are non-profits and acquire the majority of their funds through generous contributions. This is not a fundraising letter at least not in the traditional sense. I wanted to tell you what my life has been like and what it has been about because St. Peter's has played such a significant role in getting me to this point. St. Peter's was the first Episcopal Church I walked into and the first real church family I was graced to be given. It was a place I felt at home and grew. From the Esserts loving me and sponsoring me to make my Cursillo, to the nurturing words of Teri's sermons, to Beth Knife connecting me to my first ministry opportunities with Sylvia and the food pantry. It was when I went to Convention in Arkansas with St Peter's that I ran into the person who introduced me to the Episcopal Service Corps. St. Peter's is my firm foundation and I am building a house on it...A house that is still in-progress but I believe will be something of beauty at the end of days. So I ask not for you to support me but for your continued support. Perhaps, this means continued prayer as I know you do as I receive the e-mails every week and see my name in the prayers and petitions. I pray for you as well. Perhaps, it is in a simple note of love and encouragement. I get those now and then and they always lift my spirit. And perhaps, if you are able this continued support might take the form of a monetary contribution of your choosing. Your gifts, talents, and treasure are yours' to give and however you choose to do so God is well pleased. As well pleased as I have been to know you, continue to know you, and to always love you. I hope these words find you well and embrace you in my loving arms as I used to do to many of you during our long sessions of Peace-giving. Not every church has so much Peace to give but then again not every church is our St. Peter's. If you would like to reach me, my e-mail is: [email protected] and my phone number is: (501-)259-9604. Even if you just want to say hello, I would love to hear from you. Blessings of Peace and All My Love, Patrick Christopher Kangrga

Heifer Ranch Global Village:

Parent's please mark your calendars for April 26-27. Rev. Andrew Hybl will be taking our EYC students (6-12th grade) on a weekend immersion at Heifer Ranch Global Village. We will carpool to the Ranch at 8:00 a.m. on April 26. According to the staff at Heifer Ranch, "students will be immersed in an environment where nothing - shelter, food, water or cooking fuel - can be taken for granted. Participants will be responsible for preparing a meal with limited resources and spend a night in the Global Village." Last year’s trip to Heifer Ranch was an eye opening experience for everyone. Throughout the weekend, students are immersed in classes and hands-on experiences in which they examine issues of poverty, hunger, and health on a global scale. Students will also be challenged to find solutions for the problems we face on a global scale. This is a great weekend that your youth will not want to miss!!! Cost is $45.00 per student (scholarships available). Sign-up sheet is in the lobby.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Vestry Summary January 12, 2014 Attendees: LeRoy Hendricks, John Shute, John Vanderslice, Scotty Bell, Andrew Hybl, Jerry Adams, Wayne Stengel, Douglas Young, Kitson Roger, Jeanetta Darley, Kitson Roger, Sylvia Walker, Warren Readnour, Carolyn Scott, Teri Daily Opening Prayer: Teri Daily Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting: Douglas made a motion to accept minutes as presented. Jerry seconded the motion and all approved. Committee and Ministry Reports 1. Stewardship: Jerry Adams. The Stewardship Committee has been discussing contacting people

who pledged last year, but who have not pledged this year to date. 1. Finance Committee: John Shute. (Handouts: Statement of Financial Position, Profit and Loss

Budget vs. Actual, Consolidated Capital Campaign) There was a large gift given at the end of 2013: $200K will be put on the church’s mortgage principal. This means we could have the mortgage paid off by the end of the capital campaign. An additional $20K was put on the mortgage principal in 2013. The question was raised as to just make the large principal payment vs. re-financing the mortgage for a lower payment. No decision was made, more information is needed.

Capital Campaign: We are actually ahead on pledge payments. Staff raises were discussed and approved. Our entire Bethlehem House pledge was paid in 2013. We are $1300.00 short in our Share the Bounty pledge. Kitson will send a check to the diocese and let Mary Jane Hodges know that the funds are coming. John V made a motion that the budget presented, with adjustments, be approved. The motion was seconded and all approved. Jerry thanked John Shute and Kitson for their hard work in preparing the budget. Food Pantry: Sylvia Walker. In December, 136 households were served. At the end of March, Sylvia will step down as leader. Sylvia will stay on as a pantry volunteer. Old/Continuing Business Items: 1. Naming the Library: Teri Daily. The plan is to name the library in honor of Elizabeth Pope. 1. Courtyard Labyrinth Update: Teri Daily and Carolyn Scott. The labyrinth will be named for Steele

Hays. A brochure is in the works with information. We will reach out to the legal community as some in that community may wish to help with funding. Right now, we have approximately $12K, but need approximately $13K more. This should be installed by the Easter Vigil, if all goes as planned. Steve Hurd is working on the courtyard architectural drawing.

1. Parish Retreat: Teri Daily. Scheduled for March 7-9. Teri is meeting with Dee Sanders tomorrow

to discuss prices, registration forms, etc.

New Business Items 1. Delegates to Diocesan Convention: February 14-15 at Christ Episcopal Church and Episcopal

Collegiate School. Paul McCowan has volunteered to be a delegate this year. Jerry Adams and Carolyn Scott have volunteered to go as well. John Shute will go as an alternate. Douglas made a motion, seconded by John V to approve these individuals for convention, and all approved.

2. Nominees for the Vestry: Kelley King, Jay Ruud and Liz Larson have all agreed to serve on the vestry.

1. Art, Pray, Love: There are 22 artists who will be here and some musical artists as well..

Everything is on schedule for the event on January 25th. Rector’s Report: Teri Daily. Housing allowances for Teri and Andrew: Warren moved to approve the housing allowances as presented, with 2014 salary information updated. Family and Youth Minister: This position will start mid-year. Upcoming book study: Practicing the Way of Jesus. Junior Warden’s Report: Scotty Bell. There is a soft spot in the food pantry floor that needs to be addressed. The rubber seals on the stained glass windows also need to be fixed. Kitchen renovations will also get underway. The bell in the bell tower has been fixed. The roof over the offices and education wing has been leaking. Estimates have been received for both fixing and replacing the roof. Ric suggested that this not be done until the weather is warmer because the roof has to be taken off. Jerry suggested that Scotty discuss the roof vs. a/c repairs with the Jr. Warden’s committee and discern priorities. Jerry made a motion that we proceed on replacing the roof, as recommended by the Jr. Warden committee. Wayne seconded and all approved. Scotty asked if the kitchen stove and refrigerator should be replaced, and Scotty will get some numbers together for the next vestry meeting. Senior Warden’s Report: John Vanderslice. John feels overall St. Peter’s has had a great year. He thanked Scotty for his work as Junior Warden. Wayne thanked Teri and Andrew for all their dedication and work at St. Peter’s. Teri thanked John and Wayne for their work on the Vestry. Next Vestry Meeting: Tuesday January 28, 2014 at 6:00 pm. Worship Meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm.
