DIVERSE. ACCESSIBLE. NATURAL ADVENTURES.The Peel Region is Western Australia’s most diverse region and 'must see' destination when visiting Perth. The area was originally home to the Bindjareb people of the Bibbulmun nation before European colonisation. The region is named after the Englishman Thomas Peel who arrived aboard the ship Gilmore in December 1829 with a group of settlers to start a settlement south of Woodman Point. After many mishaps and plagued by ill health Thomas Peel eventually brought his remaining settlers to the area known today as Mandurah.Today the Peel Region is Perth’s natural adventure playground made up of the City of Mandurah and surrounding Shires of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona and Boddington. The experiences range from fun at the coast to experiences in the bush. Zip along the estuary or take to the open ocean on a jet ski, go fishing, board a dolphin cruise, tee off at world-class golf courses, go mountain biking or hiking through jarrah forests, treetop climbing or wine tasting. The opportunities are endless.

HIKING

Camping & Caravanning

Mandurah and the Peel Region is the perfect destination for nature lovers and camping enthusiasts. Sleep under the stars at one of the region’s many national park camp sites, or stay at a lakeside tourist park and wake up to breathtaking views.

If you’re coming from Perth, stop and relax on the foothills of the Darling Ranges in the north, near the spectacular Serpentine Falls National Park. Or have a rest at the RV short stay area in Jarrahdale.

In Mandurah, you can either base yourself at the centrally located caravan parks, or about eight kilometres outside the city centre at Mandurah’s ‘Top Tourist’ four star caravan park. The historic town of Pinjarra, about 17 km from Mandurah, sits on the Murray River. There, you can camp right on the banks of the river in a beautiful camping area spread across four acres.

The many campgrounds at Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup have a range of different facilities including camp kitchens, gas barbecues and communal fire pits.

Day use areas offer opportunities to relax by the waterside or picnic, swim and kayak. The majority of campsites must be booked at least 24 hours in advance at parkstay.dpaw.wa.gov.au. The exception to this rule are Nanga Mill and Nanga Townsite which cannot be booked in advance and operate on a first come, first-served basis. Some hard surface, larger sites are available at Nanga Brook campsite for campervans, caravans and trailers.

Martin’s Tank Campground near Preston Beach operates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and is a beautiful place to camp between September and May. You can spot a wide range of migratory birds there.

More often than not you’ll see dolphins right in the heart of Mandurah. The waterways are also home to birds so bring binoculars to spot ospreys, spoonbills, egrets, sea eagles and kingfishers. Grab the ‘Peel Inlet & Harvey Estuary Water & Shorebirds Birdwatching Walking Trail Guide’ at the Mandurah Visitor Centre to explore the habitat of this abundant birdlife around the estuary. At the region’s wildlife parks, Peel Zoo in Pinjarra and Cohunu Koala Park in Byford, you can also get close to Australian wildlife like kangaroos, koalas and even Tasmanian devils.

ABORIGINAL CULTURE & HERITAGE

Aboriginal culture and heritage can be seen, heard and discovered all over the Peel Region.

There are plenty of places to find contemporary art, historical collections and local tours. Watch out for the tile mosaic on Mandurah’s Eastern Foreshore which was developed by Noongar Woman Sandra Hill acknowledging Aboriginal people in the area.

Meaning ‘Spirit of the totems’, Borrunga Park in the Mandurah suburb Dudley Park is a great place to understand the local Noongar culture.

At Winjan’s Campsite on McLarty Road in Mandurah (Halls Head), you’ll find six totem poles telling of the six seasons that the Noongar people used.

On McLarty Road in Pinjarra, a memorial and park commemorate the site of the Pinjarra Massacre which occurred in 1834 and claimed the lives of 70 Noongar people.

Guided tours and Aboriginal experiences are available locally in the Shire of Murray from Bindjareb Middars. Bookings on [email protected].

The real-life festival

that inspired the movie

Three Summers

PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY:

Every April in the heart of the Peel Region: An explosion of music, dance, colour, fun and sheer enjoyment! 12 stages pumping with folk, world and roots music plus a whole lot more spilling onto the tree-lined streets of the historic Fairbridge Village, Pinjarra.

Camp for the weekend or come for the day, and discover a treasure-trove of cultural delights.

fairbridgefestival.com.au

three summersA MOVIE BY BEN ELTON

Three Summers is the first movie to be shot entirely in the Peel Region and can be seen in cinemas in 2017. Production and post-production also took place in Western Australia in 2016.

Written and directed by Ben Elton, award-winning novelist, playwright, television writer and lyricist, Three Summers is described as a fusion of romance, music and political satire inspired by the Fairbridge Festival.

The international and domestic cast and crew, had every weekend free to explore and enjoy everything in the Peel Region. The producer Michael Wrenn shared his Top 5 Experiences with us.

WAROONA AGRICULTURAL SHOW Though it only happens once a year, being able to attend this show was a great occasion to engage with a key local event and also a chance to run into so many people who have been part of our production. The bantam hens and farriers competition was a highlight though I have too much imagination to watch the woodcutting for too long. It was great to sample the wines of Drakesbrook Fine Wines who donated product to the film. I also bought a hand crafted optical illusion chopping board which will look great at home with cheese on it.

THE WINE TREE, DWELLINGUP An oddly named cider brewery (and some wine to be fair) that makes up for it with old time charm. Situated just off the Bibbulmun Track, with the apple trees in blossom under the canopy of eucalypts and firs, it’s a great place to relax and imbibe. The pork scratchings were, as threatened, rather 'more ish' and, with a designated driver and a few pulls of the cider pump, a pleasure to indulge in.

FAIRBRIDGE VILLAGE, PINJARRA Fairbridge Village was our home for the 6 weeks of production, during which the venue effortlessly absorbed 70 crew, 36 cast, 1,000 extras, one circus tent and the recreation of our music festival as well as hosting multiple school groups, weddings and running its own services with ease and conviviality. It’s great for the whole production to have been able to spend a real patch of time in one place with the staff, peacocks and kangaroos (special shout out to caretakers John and Jason, Koodah Cornwall and Sue, our indigenous advisors, as well as local residents, Stephanie Smith our go-to person and CEO David Russel). We look forward to coming back next year to attend the Fairbridge Festival, Ben Elton's inspiration for the movie in the first place.

JARRA INFUSION CAFÉ, PINJARRA This café became the production's home away from home in our rare downtime. The raw cakes and paleo lasagne with the nut paste topping (who knew!) were a particular hit. The relaxed atmosphere and cosy furnishings were perfectly attuned to our folk festival world - the art department did a run on their hand made hats and art work which will all feature in the film. I wasn't brave enough to try the turmeric latte but maybe next time. Ask for Nic.

FRISKY DEER, MANDURAH There's much to love on the Mandurah waterfront from the local oysters at Stagedoor Waterfront Restaurant, the restaurant often frequented by our cast below The Sebel, or the pukka fish and chips at Cicerello's. But the stand out was the little bijou café and home decor venture, Frisky Deer, a short stroll from the boardwalk. Early starts during production meant we didn't get to use it as much as we would have liked - but whenever possible the cast would be picked up with their heads also filled with home decoration tips!

TOP THINGS TO DO

TAKE A CRUISE OR TRAIN RIDE

Explore Mandurah’s picturesque waterways and watch dolphins surfing the bow waves on one of the many cruises departing from Mandurah. Or hop on the Fun Train that takes you around Mandurah and stops at 10 designated stations around the city.

CATCH YOUR OWN DINNER

Mandurah is a popular place to go fishing and crabbing. Whether it’s a fishing charter or fishing boat hire, you’ll be casting that line. Try a deep sea fishing tour, or if you prefer a bit of independence, fishing boat hire may be more your thing. A fishing trip is guaranteed to be fun… but can you land that catch?

FUN ON THE WATER

Mandurah is a true aquatic playground. Hire a kayak, stand-up paddle, jetski or boat to explore the vast waterways. You can even enjoy a BBQ on the water. And if you’re up for it, experience the weightlessness of flyboarding, a must for all adrenaline junkies.

DINING WITH A VIEW!

Eat and drink your way through the many cafés, award-winning restaurants and ice creameries at Mandurah’s foreshore and at Dolphin Quay. Enjoy high tea, a casual family meal of golden fish and chips or savour grilled fish from a beach barbecue at sunset.

KIDS ACTIVITIES

Take the kids to King Carnival, WA’s oldest amusement park boasting 18-hole mini golf, rides, trampolines and water slides. Or bounce into Mandurah’s new indoor inflatable playground, one of the biggest in Australia.

EXPLORE THE CREERY WETLANDS

Creery Wetlands offers 30 acres of nature reserve in Mandurah which annually host over 130 different species of native and migratory birds. These include the tiny Red-necked Stint which weighs no more than a box of matches and flies to Mandurah from Siberia. The trail starts at Darwin Terrace, Mariner’s Cove.

DISCOVER THE THROMBOLITES

Less than half an hour’s drive south of Mandurah you’ll find Lake Clifton and the Yalgorup National Park. There, you’ll see the largest thrombolite reef in the Southern Hemisphere – living fossils that have sheltered in these waters for millennia.

ENJOY VISUAL ART

Feast your eyes, not just in galleries, but in public spaces. Two public art walking trails showcase amazing local art. The Contemporary Art Spaces (CASM) Gallery hosts regular exhibitions throughout the year and Mandurah’s foreshore is home to the Peel Region’s cultural hub with the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre presenting world-class performances.

MANDURAH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Every year, Mandurah turns into a little Las Vegas from December until mid-January. The Mandurah residents who live on the canals like to dress up their houses for Christmas and often spend a fortune on their Christmas lights decoration. The best way to watch this unique spectacle is from a boat. So get on a cruise and feel the festive spirit of the season.

FUN ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN

Cohunu Koala Park is a great way to get up close and personal with some of the unique Australian fauna. The kids can hand feed many of the free roaming animals - and even hold the koalas! A miniature railway zig-zags through the park during most weekends and public holidays, and is a great way to see everything. The skate parks in Serpentine, Jarrahdale and Mundijong will keep the older kids entertained.
