CLASS: XII SUBJECT: ENGLISH CORE (Code No.301)

Background:

Students are expected to have acquired a reasonable degree of language proficiency in English by the time they come to senior secondary level and the course will aim, essentially, at promoting the higher- order language skills. For a large number of students, the higher secondary stage will be a preparation for the university, where a fairly high degree of proficiency in English may be required. But for another large group, the higher secondary stage may be a preparation for entry into the world of work. The Core Course should cater to both groups by promoting the language skills required for academic study as well as the language skills required for the workplace.

Objectives:

The general objectives at this stage are:

(i) Tolistenandcomprehendliveaswellasrecordedoralpresentationsonavarietyoftopics. (ii) To develop greater confidence and proficiency in the use of language skills necessary for

social and academic purpose. (iii) To participate in group discussions, interviews by making short oral presentation on given

topics. (iv) To perceive the overall meaning and organization of the text (i.e., the relationships of the

different "chunks" in the text to each other to identify the central/main point and supporting details etc.

(v) To build communicative competence in various registers of English. (vi) To promote advanced language skills with an aim to develop the skills of reasoning,

drawing inferences, etc. through meaningful activities.

(vii) To translate texts from mother tongue(s) into English and vice versa. (viii) To develop ability and knowledge required in order to engage in independent reflection and

enquiry.

At the end of this stage learners will be able to do the following:

Read and comprehend extended texts (prescribed and non-prescribed) in the following genres: science, fiction, drama, poetry, biography, autobiography, travel and sports literature etc.

Text-based writing (i.e. writing in response to questions or tasks based on prescribed or unseen texts) Understand and respond to lectures, speeches, etc.

Write expository / argumentative essays, explaining or developing a topic, arguing a case, etc.

Write formal/informal letters and applications for different purposes. Write items related to the workplace (minutes, memoranda, notices, summaries, reports etc. Filling up of forms, preparing CV, e-mail messages.

Making notes from reference materials, recorded talks etc.

Students are expected to develop the following study skills:

(i) Refer to dictionaries, encyclopedia, thesaurus and academic reference material. (ii) Select and extract relevant information, using reading skills of skimming and scanning. (iii) Understand the writer's attitude and bias. (iv) Comprehend the difference between what is said and what is implied. (v) Understand the language of propaganda and persuasion. SECTIONA: READING COMPREHENSION (30 Marks) The section A will have two passages: Reading Unseen Passage (20 Marks)

Note making (10 Marks) One unseen passage with a variety of very short answer, short answer and MCQ type questions to test comprehension, interpretation and inference. Vocabulary such as word formation and inference of meaning will also be tested. The total length of the passage will be between 800–900words.The passages will include one of the following: a) Factual passage, e.g., instructions, descriptions, reports. b) Descriptive passage involving opinion, e.g., argumentative, persuasive or interpretative text. c) Literary passage, e.g., extract from fiction, drama, poetry, essay or biography. A poem could be of28- 35 lines. The passage can be literary, factual or discursive to test comprehensions. The length of the passage should be between 800-900 words. d) A second passage of 800-900 words for note-making and abstraction.

SECTION B:WRITING SKILLS (30 Marks) Short Answer Questions: e.g., advertisement and notices, designing or drafting posters, writing formal and informal invitations and replies. Long Answer Questions: Letters based on verbal / visual input. Letter types include business or official letters (for making enquiries, registering complaints, asking for and giving information, placing orders and sending replies) Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest) Application for a job Very Long Answer Questions: Two compositions based on visual and/or verbal input may be descriptive or argumentati ve in nature such as an article, a debate or a speech or a report SECTION C : LITERATURE TEXTBOOKS AND LONG READING TEXT (40 Marks)

Long Answer Question - Based on texts to test global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the texts to bring out the key messages and values. Ø Prepare a chart illustrating stages of guest cycle with the help of different coloured sketch pens and display it in your practical lab.

Unit -2 Reception Ø Draw neat formats of Guest registration card and ‘C’ form on a chart paper. Ø In groups of 2 students, prepare a role play on the following situations and enact it in front of the class. The flow charts given in the lesson should act as the reference material for writing the role play. SQL commands: aggregation functions – having, group by, order

• Recursively find the factorial of a natural number.

• Read a file line by line and print it.

• Remove all the lines that contain the character `a' in a file and write it to another file.

• Write a Python function sin(x, n) to calculate the value of sin(x) using its Taylor series expansion up

to n terms. Compare the values of sin(x) for different values of n with the correct value.

• Write a random number generator that generates random numbers between 1 and 6 (simulates a

dice). � Write a recursive code to find the sum of all elements of a list.

• Write a recursive code to compute the n th Fibonacci number.

• Write a Python program to implement a stack and queue using a list data-structure.

• Write a recursive Python program to test if a string is a palindrome or not.

• Write a Python program to plot the function y = x 2 using the pyplot or matplotlib libraries.

• Create a graphical application that accepts user inputs, performs some operation on them, and

then writes the output on the screen. For example, write a small calculator. Use the tkinter library.

• Take a sample of 10 phishing e-mails and find the most common words.

4.2. Data Management: SQL and web-server

• Find the min, max, sum, and average of the marks in a student marks table.

• Find the total number of customers from each country in the table (customer ID, customer name,

country) using group by.

• Write a SQL query to order the (student ID, marks) table in descending order of the marks.

• Integrate SQL with Python by importing the MySQL module

• Write a Django based web server to parse a user request (POST), and write it to a CSV file.

5. Project The aim of the class project is to create something that is tangible and useful. This should

be done in groups of 2 to 3 students, and should be started by students at least 6 months before the

submission deadline. The aim here is to find a real world problem that is worthwhile to solve.

Students are encouraged to visit local businesses and ask them about the problems that they are

facing. For example, if a business is finding it hard to create invoices for filing GST claims, then

students can do a project that takes the raw data (list of transactions), groups the transactions by

category, accounts for the GST tax rates, and creates invoices in the appropriate format. Students

can be extremely creative here. They can use a wide variety of Python libraries to create user

friendly applications such as games, software for their school, software for their disabled fellow

students, and mobile applications, Of course to do some of this projects, some additional learning is

required; this should be encouraged. Students should know how to teach themselves. If three

people work on a project for 6 months, at least 500 lines of code is expected. The committee has

also been made aware about the degree of plagiarism in such projects. Teachers should take a very

strict look at this situation, and take very strict disciplinary action against students who are cheating

on lab assignments, or projects, or using pirated software to do the same. Everything that is

proposed can be achieved using absolutely free, and legitimate open source software.

The aim here is to find a real world problem that is worthwhile to solve. Students are encouraged to visit local businesses and ask them about the problems that they are facing. For example, if a business is finding it hard to create invoices for filing GST claims, then students can do a project that takes the raw data (list of transactions), groups the transactions by category, accounts for the GST tax rates, and creates invoices in the appropriate format. Students can be extremely creative here. They can use a wide variety of Python libraries to create user friendly applications such as games, software for their school, software for their disabled fellow students, and mobile applications, Of course to do some of this projects, some additional learning is required; this should be encouraged. Students should know how to teach themselves. If three people work on a project for 6 months, at least 500 lines of code is expected. The committee has also been made aware about the degree of plagiarism in such projects. Teachers should take a very strict look at this situation, and take very strict disciplinary action against students who are cheating on lab assignments, or projects, or using pirated software to do the same. Everything that is proposed can be achieved using absolutely free, and legitimate open source software. 5. Viva Voce

Students will be asked oral questions during practical examination to be conducted at the end of the course. The questions will be from the entire course covered in the academic session.
