What is Personality? The term personality derives from the ancient

Latin: Persona

Persona means Mask, a reference to the external appearance of the individual, as a role, but definition of personality is more than a role.

Personality psychologist are developing their

own theory based on their point of view, therefore there are many perspectives of personality referring to their own life experience.

individual (emotional, motivational, and cognitive process) – individual differences

The Psychoanalytic Approach: › People’s unconcious minds are largely responsible for

important differences in their behavior styles.

The Trait Approach:› People’s behavior influenced by various personality

characteristics

The Biological Approach:› Emphasize in predispositions and physiological

processes to explain individual differences in personality.

The Humanistic Approach:Identify personal responsibility and feelings of self-

acceptance as the key causes of differences in personality.

The Behavioral/Social Learning Approach:Consistent behavior patterns as the result of

conditioning and expectations

The Cognitive Approach:Look at differences in the way people process

information to explain differences in behavior.
