Notes ON THE PROGRAM

Mozart composed the Requiem forFranz Count von Walsegg, who wanteda special memorial in honor of his latewife: a Requiem to be played annuallyon the anniversary of her death. Awareof the tremendous talent he was hiring, von Walsegg paid well and gave Mozartfree rein. The superstitious and over-worked Mozart, in turn, procrastinated. He never managed to finish the workand was dictating portions of it to hisstudent, Franz Xavier Süßmayr, evenon the day of his death. His last act ofcomposition was to write out the firsteight bars of the Lacrymosa and gatherhis friends together to sing with himwhat he had written so far, but he col-lapsed and died several hours later. AfterMozart’s death, his widow Constanzeneeded the rest of the money from theunfinished commission. It was left toSüßmayr to finish the manuscript, aftera number of other composers turned itdown. Claiming to be very familiarwith Mozart’s ideas about the work, hefinished the missing parts. But since nooriginal manuscript pages of theSanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Deihave been found, there remains a run-ning argument among scholars as towhere Mozart ends and Süßmayr begins.Süßmayr provided more than the end-ing. Mozart had skipped around in hiscomposition of the piece; while we havethe complete autograph of the Offertory(the Domine Deus and Hostias), he left

incomplete the last four lines of theDies irae text—only eight measures ofthe Lacrymosa are in Mozart’s hand.Süßmayr, who was with Mozart at theend, probably knew what the composerhad intended for the completion of theLacrymosa, and perhaps for the otherunfinished movements as well. For theLux aeterna and Cum sanctis tuisfugue, he reused the introit and Kyrie. The work contains section after sectionof high drama and grippingly poignantmusic. Notably absent is any sense ofoptimism about a better life hereafter.Mozart’s unusually dark, bottom-heavy orchestration reinforces the grimmessage of the text. Mozart wrote forboth the chorus and soloists as if thefuture of their own souls were at stake. With terrifyingly accurate tone paint-ing, the chorus describes the tortures ofhell, at times demanding, at otherspleading for mercy and redemption. Wecan credit the composer with setting astandard for subsequent settings of theRequiem Mass, particularly for its cen-terpiece, the spine-chilling Dies irae. The Requiem was finally performed inmemoriam for the Countess vonWalsegg on December 14, 1793, butnot before it had been performed inJanuary of the same year as a benefitfor Constanze Mozart and her sons—with proper attribution.

I. Introitus Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis care veniet. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

II. Kyrie Kyrie, eleison. Christe, eleison. Kyrie, eleison.

III. Sequenz i. Dies irae Dies irae, dies illa Solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus,

Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. You are praised, God, in Zion, and homage will be paid to You in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, to You all flesh will come. Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them.

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

Day of wrath, day of anger will dissolve the world in ashes, as foretold by David and the Sibyl. Great trembling there will be

French organist and composer MauriceDuruflé began his musical career in thechoir of the cathedral of Rouen. Hecomposed orchestral, organ, and churchmusic, but the Requiem is consideredhis finest work, composed in 1947 oncommission from the French publish-ing company Durand. The Requiemcombines the medieval chant melodieswith modern orchestration and harmony. In his notes the composer wrote, “…Ihave attempted to penetrate to theessence of the Gregorian style, andhave tried to reconcile as far as possiblethe very flexible Gregorian rhythms…with the exigencies of modern notation.”

At the end of the liturgical requiemmass, the Responsory “Libera me,Domine, de morte aeterna” (“Free mefrom eternal death”), with its openinghorn blast representing the call to judg-ment, portrays the trembling soul injudgment before God. The baritonesoloist takes the role of the terrifiedsoul. Unwilling to end this gentle workon a note of terror, Duruflé, like Fauré,added an additional movement fromthe burial service, the antiphon InParadisum, which gently sets the soulon its journey to eternal peace.

quando judex est venturus, cuncta stricte discussurus!

ii. Tuba mirum Tuba mirum spargens sonum per sepulcra regionum, coget omnes ante thronum.

Mors stupebit et natura, cum resurget creatura, judicanti responsura.

Liber scriptus proferetur,in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.

Judex ergo cum sedebit, quidquid latet, apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus? quem patronum rogaturus, cum vix justus sit securus?

iii. Rex tremendae Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos savas gratis, salve me, fons pietatis.

iv. Recordare Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae; ne me perdas illa die.

Quaerens me, sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non sit cassus.

Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus: culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce, Deus.

Qui Mariam absolvisti, et latronem exaudisti, mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Preces meae non sunt dignae, sed tu, bonus, fac benigne, ne perenni cremer igne.

Inter oves locum praesta,

when the Judge descends from heaven to examine all things closely.

The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth’s sepulchres and gather all before the throne.

Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgement.

A book will be brought forth, in which all will be written, by which the world will be judged.

When the judge takes his place, what is hidden will be revealed, nothing will remain unavenged.

What shall a wretch like me say? Who shall intercede for me, when the just ones need mercy?

King of tremendous majesty, who freely saves those worthy ones, save me, source of mercy.

Remember, kind Jesus, my salvation caused your suffering; do not forsake me on that day.

Faint and weary you have sought me, redeemed me, suffering on the cross; may such great effort not be in vain.

Righteous judge of vengeance, grant me the gift of absolution before the day of retribution.

I moan as one who is guilty: owning my shame with a red face; suppliant before you, Lord.

You, who absolved Mary, and listened to the thief, give me hope also.

My prayers are unworthy, but, good Lord, have mercy, and rescue me from eternal fire.

Provide me a place among the sheep,

and separate me from the goats, guiding me to Your right hand.

When the accused are confounded, and doomed to flames of woe, call me among the blessed.

I kneel with submissive heart, my contrition is like ashes, help me in my final condition.

That day of tears and mourning, when from the ashes shall arise, all humanity to be judged. Spare us by your mercy, Lord, gentle Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of the faithful, departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit.

Deliver them from the lion's mouth, lest hell swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness.

Let the standard-bearer, holy Michael, bring them into holy light. Which was promised to Abraham and his descendants.
