Introduction to Performance Series

Page 3: Performance series student set up and results

What is Performance Series?• New students in grades K-10 are required to take

placement tests before curriculum may be shipped. For k-1st grade, we have a paper test to email to the family. They will need to know to print the test in color and scan, fax or mail the results to us for review.

• The Performance Series placement test should be taken by students in 2nd –10th grade. The results of this test are used for initial placement of the student.

• Students are required to take the placement test again at the end of the first semester and at the end of the year to measure growth..

Testing Script (Parents, please read this script to your student) Today you will take a [subject] test. This test helps me and your advisors at Bridgeway Academy understand what you have learned so far and how they can help you learn more. Today’s test is a little like a paper and pencil test, where you read from a test booklet and fill in bubbles. And it’s a little like using a web page, because it’s on a computer. This test is different than other tests you’ve taken. If you get a question wrong, it will give you an easier one next. If you get a question right, it will give you a harder one next. This helps the test figure out exactly how much you know about [subject]. Do you have any questions about this? [pause] If you need help in any way, you can ask me during the test. Are you comfortable? Can you use your mouse? Can you see your computer screen clearly? [Pause] Select español in the bottom right-hand corner if you want to see the test instructions in Spanish. The questions are all multiple-choice. Be sure to pick the best answer. To pick an answer, click on the letter you want (like filling a bubble, but with the mouse) or anywhere on the answer itself. You can also type the letter you want on the keyboard. It’s very important to do your best and answer all items carefully. The test will stop if you are guessing. You will have to start over from the beginning if this happens. You can’t return to a question that you have already answered, and you can’t “skip ahead” without answering a question. If you need to stop the test, please tell me and I will help you. When you’re done, you will see “You have finished the test” on your screen. When you see that, come and get me. Do you have a question at this point? [Pause] Please read the testing instructions and begin the test.

Enter the Student ID from Kazeli, the student First Name, Last Name and Password. The Password should always be equal to the student’s first name. Enter the student’s entering grade level and gender. If available, also enter the student’s birthdate. If the student’s grade level is not known, ask the parents if they know the student’s approximate reading level and enter this as the grade level. Click NEXT.

Classes

• Classes are a grouping tool.

• Classes do not indicate test subject selection

• Each advisor should have their own class so that they can easily view their own list of students

Creating Student Account

• From the student contact card in Kazeli, send the “Proctoring the Placement Test” template email to the family.

Spoiled Tests

• A test will spoil if:– A student does not take enough time to

answer questions– Randomly chooses answers or uses any

detectable pattern to choose answers– If a test spoils, students can simply login

again to restart the test

Retrieving Placement Test Scores

• Review of the placement test should be completed within 5 Business days from when results are submitted, if possible. Placement should not be reviewed until all 3 subjects have been completed: math, language arts and reading.

•  • Finding Placement Scores in Performance Series

• Log into PerformanceSeries daily to find students who completed tests. (http://edperformance.com/)

• Go to Staff Login; Site ID: 59-8045-6297; Staff ID: (Varies with advisor); Password: bridgeway09

Understanding the Performance Series Profile

Report• Scaled Score

• The Scaled Score is comparable to an “educational yardstick.” The score ranges from 1300-3700. As a student “grows” throughout the year and over years, this is the score to look to monitor longitudinal progress.

• The scale stays the same throughout the program so that a student’s growth and progress can be tracked over an extended period of time

The Unit Score

• Advisors use the USR as an indicator to determine a particular unit in which a student has a displayed a strength or weakness (e.g., Reading – Vocabulary). TO use the score for this purpose the USR must not numerically overlap with the other unit-based scores, meaning the score range is entirely higher or lower than the numerical value of the other unit-based scores. To further illustrate the point of advisors determining a student’s strength or weakness area, refer to the steps below:

Page 27: Performance series student set up and results

Identify the upper and lower bound of a USR that appears to be lower or higher than other USRS. For example: The Vocabulary USR = (2100-2300-2500) and appears to be lower than one or more of the other USRs (indicating a potential area of weakness)

Page 28: Performance series student set up and results

• If trying to determine an area of weakness, compare the upper bound of the lowers/lower USR to the lower bounds of the other USRs. The upper bound of the USR in the unit of weakness must fall below and NOT equal the lower bound of all other USRs.

– For Example: Compare the upper bound of Vocabulary (2500) to the lower bounds of Long Passage (3040), Fiction (2990), and Nonfiction (2590). (2500) is entirely below the lower bounds of the other USRs with no numerical overlap,. Therefore, this student has a statistically significant area of weakness in Vocabulary.

• If trying to determine an area of strength, compare the lower bound of the highest/higher USR to the upper bounds of the other USRs. The lower bound of the USR is the unit of strength must be above and not equal to the upper bound of all other URSs.

– NOTE: If the unit-based scores all numerically overlap, the student does not have a statistically significant strength or weakness in

any unit.

Determining Instructional Next Steps

• Academic Advisor use the USR scores in combination with the unit-based Suggested Learning Objectives and the overall Scaled Score to determine instructional next steps. If a student demonstrates a strength or weakness in a particular unit, the advisor can strategically select Unit Study guides to send to the student to complete. The advisor will also review the student curriculum selection and make adjustments as necessary to strengthen the student in areas of weakness.
