Sustainability

Stahl strongly believes in taking responsibility. We see it as an obligation to take a leading role in creating a more sustainable future. We believe, we have to use our innovation power to reduce the impact on the environment in each stage of the supply chain.

Stahl sustainability principle

Six steps towards a more sustainable future

Raw Materials General examples ■  Restricted substances have been

removed from our products ■  We use renewable and bio-based

feedstock and continue innovating to reduce the environmental impact of our products

■  Our suppliers have to comply to sustainability standards

> 1 STAHL EVO examples ■  Offer DMF(A)-free product solutions ■  No use of Mekoximes ■  Offer BTX-free product solutions

(Benzene, Toluene, Xylene)

Production General examples ■  We use water and energy efficiently ■  We minimise waste, effluents and

emissions ■  We offer a safe and healthy working

environment

> 2 STAHL EVO examples ■  Promote water-based products

wherever possible ■  Only STAHL EVO solvents without

DMF(A), without Mekoximes, without BTX in effluents and emission

Packaging & distribution General examples ■  We stimulate reduction of

packaging waste ■  We recycle raw material packaging ■  We combine orders to reduce fuel and

emissions

> 3 STAHL EVO example ■  No hazardous products

Product application General examples ■  We innovate to shorten the

manufacturing process, minimise water and energy usage, waste, effluents and emissions during manufacturing

■  We innovate to develop the safest chemistry to protect our and our clients’ employees

> 4 ■  We train our clients’ employees how to use our coatings in a safe way

STAHL EVO examples ■  No use of Dimethylformamide/DMF(A) ■  Introduce new products based on

renewable feed stocks ■  No use of BTX

Product use & maintenance General examples ■  No restricted substances are part of

the end product ■  We innovate to minimise the risk of

possible allergic reactions for the end consumer

> 5 STAHL EVO examples ■  No emission or odours of hazardous

products

End of life General examples ■  We innovate to minimise the impact of

products after a useful life ■  We innovate to contribute to

biodegradable leather, fabrics and other materials

■  We innovate to minimise emissions of harmful ingredients upon disposal

> 6 STAHL EVO examples ■  No waste of Dimethylformamide/

DMF(A) or Mekoximes or BTX

Unique Carbodiimide Crosslinkers for improved chemical resistance

To improve physical and chemical properties of your coatings and lacquers, Stahl offers Crosslinkers. Stahl offers VOC-free and isocyanate-free Crosslinkers. This patented technology is used worldwide to formulate high performance and more sustainable coatings and lacquers.

I imagine smooth and gentle surfaces with improved sustainability

If it can be imagined, it can be created

How can something so dull be so exciting? Polymatte®

Polymatte® gives an optimum matt finish that gives the total haptic and aesthetics required and desired by consumers.

This Polymatte® surface shown is one that is based on a unique continuous morphology made-up from (semi-)spherical PUR particles that are inherently created during film forming of the polyurethane coating.

We imagined smooth and gentle surfaces with improved sustainability. For our Green Polymatte® we use a Polyol that is derived from oil that come from farm crops cutting the cycle down to a few months.

The Polyol is derived from rapeseed that is mainly cultivated for animal food. The rapeseed Stahl uses can be sourced locally so a reduction in transportation of the raw materials benefits the environment.

I imagine high performing coatings produced in harmony with the environment

If it can be imagined, it can be created

Lowering the environmental impact of products is a priority for brands in apparel, home furnishing, automotive and industrial application. To support these brands, Stahl developed the extensive STAHL EVO range consisting of the next-gen polyurethane coatings for footwear, bags, garments, upholstery and car interiors.

STAHL EVO building blocks

The STAHL EVO base is the more sustainable alternative for the traditional coagulation base thanks to the Permutex® mechanical foam. Permutex® RC foam compounds are ready-for-use and result into consistent application with high performance. Permutex® mechanical foam can be used in transfer coating or as direct coating on textile.

Permutex®

PermaQure® The patented PermaQure® EVO base evolved out of classical high solids polyurethanes. PermaQure® products contain no volatile components at all and are therefore free of odour and emissions. Different from classic high solids, PermaQure® does not contain toxic blocking agents like Mekoximes. It provides a thick and durable coating layer with excellent hydrolysis resistance and can be compact or foamed. PermaQure® is specially designed for the transfer coating process.

Additives for optimal line performance and stability

Our portfolio offers an extensive variety of polymeric binders and finishes. At the same time, the right processing and application characteristics of lacquers and coatings make it difficult to rely on general purpose products. Therefore we created a comprehensive range of additives. To optimize line performance and stability of both waterborne and solventborne lacquering systems and to enhance specific surface coating properties.

Additives for optimal line performance and stability

Our range ■  LA: Levelling agent ■  RM: Rheology modifier (thickener) ■  DF: Defoamer ■  HM: Hand modifier ■  MA: General additives ■  WD: Waterborne duller ■  SD: Solventborne duller

We work together with our partners to provide them with the best possible solutions in process chemicals for leather products, performance coatings and polymers
