Say the verbs: In this exercise, students read the texts again and listen to the pronunciation of some underlined third person singular present simple verbs. Then students can record their own pronunciation of those verbs. 3. Let’s practise!: Now, students do some listening comprehension practice with a fill in the gaps activity for them to use prepositions and third person singular present simple verbs. 4. Speaking: this activity consists of students recording their own speeches about the life of three new characters. 5. Writing: now they can write a paragraph about somebody they know well, such as a member of their family or a friend. 6. Repeat: now students are presented with three simple present questions and their corresponding answers. They listen to their pronunciation, paying attention as well to intonation and rhythm and then, they record them. 7. Can your remember?: this activity reminds students of the structure of present simple questions with a drag and drop task. 8. Make sentences: now students must write their own questions and answers using the information provided in the charts, in order to revise present simple questions. 9. Let’s talk!: this activity proposes a dialogue between the student and a character from the computer. Based on sample recorded prompts, students record the correct questions to be asked to the character, who will answer them. 10. Listening: this task is for students to listen and choose the correct sentence out of those on the screen.

    11. Unfold and choose: now students must complete the provided sentences using the options they are given. 12. Vocabulary: this is a matching exercise for students to revise vocabulary about professions; they will have to match jobs and images. 13. What do they do?: now students must match jobs and the most common actions a profession involves. They have to join each job and its description using arrows. 14. Let’s drill it!: this is a traditional drill activity for students to listen and repeat sentences regarding what some people do in their jobs. 15. A long-distance job: this activity needs Internet connection. It consists of watching a video clip describing a typical day in the life of the character presented. 16. Comprehension: a listening comprehension activity about the information from previous exercise. 17. Against the clock!: this exercise is for students to practise producing simple present questions and revise times. 18. Dave Marshall’s day: students listen to three messages from people involved in Mr Marshall’s day, one his colleagues, the train ticket inspector and his wife. They watch and listen to the messages. This activity requires Internet connection. 19. Messages!: This time students must complete the messages they have just heard; they can watch and listen to them again. 20. Who? Where?: now they must decide who said each message and where the person who said it was at the time. 21. Recording: it’s time for students to record the messages they have been working with so far. They can listen to them and repeat them.

    22. What time is it?: students will revise different ways of expressing the time with this fill in the gaps activity. 23. Tell me the time: now students have a dialogue with the computer. The character asks them questions about times and they must answer them following sample patterns.

    CHAPTER TWO – FREE TIME 1. Presentation: In this exercise, students revise the days of the week. They listen to their pronunciation and read their spelling. 2. Meet Mr. King: Next, students read a text about a new character, Mr. King, and a typical day in his life. 3. Can you remember: students identify verbs from the previous text and match them with their corresponding meanings, moving them up and down until they are placed next to the correct meaning. 4. Tom King’s weekends: this exercise provides students with a video clip where Mr. King’s free time activities are described. The activity requires Internet connection. They can also read the text, if needed. In the second part, they must fill in the gaps with the missing information. 5. Grammar tips: students now read the text from the previous exercise and must identify third person singular simple present verbs. 6. What about you?: students read and listen to present simple questions about free time activities as well as their corresponding short answers. They must repeat them and record their voice. 7. Speaking: now students make a conversation; their role is to ask Tom King questions about his weekend. 8. Let’s practise!: this exercise consists of making full questions and answers by joining the different elements of the sentences together.

    9. Listening: now students listen to several sentences and they must choose the one they hear out of a couple of possible proposed ones. 10. Writing: following several prompts from a questionnaire, students must write about the characters presented and about themselves; this is a guided writing for them to practise affirmative and negative present simple sentences. 11. The other way round: students are presented with several positive and negative present simple sentences and they must turn it positive if they are negative and negative if they are positive. 12. Mistakes!: this is a multiple choice activity for students to choose the correct simple present sentences. 13. Vocabulary: students must identify various free time activities with their corresponding images. 14. Let’s talk!: students record the questions of a conversation about weekend activities. 15. Seasons: this is a revision task for students to read and listen to the way the words for seasons are written and pronounced in English. 16. Comprehension: students now read three texts about the way three people from different countries spend their free time; then, they have to answer some reading comprehension questions about them. 17. Something’s wrong!: students are presented with a summary of the texts from the previous activity and they must find the mistakes it contains.

    A long-distance job Mr. Dave Marshall, 43, is an ICT consultant. He is British, but he lives in Brussels, in Belgium. Mr. Marshall doesn't work in Belgium; he works in Avignon, France. Every Monday he leaves home at half past two in the morning and drives from his home to the railway station, where he leaves his car and gets on the train to Avignon. Then he catches a bus and he arrives at his office at eight o'clock. He works with his ICT customers from half past eight in the morning to half past two in the afternoon, and then leaves the office. He arrives home at ten in the evening. The journey there and back takes eleven hours and costs 75 euros! Fortunately, Dave works in France only once a week. And what does he do on the other days? He serves customers from home! He has around 20 customers all around Europe and he helps them with ICT

    CHAPTER TWO – FREE TIME

    Tom King’s weekends On Fridays I come home from CNN at about 1.00 in the morning and I just relax. On Friday nights I don’t go out, but sometimes a friend comes for a late dinner. He or she brings the beer and my wife cooks something quick. She loves cooking! We listen to my radio programme or we just chat. On Saturday mornings I get up at 12.00 and I go shopping. Then in the evenings I sometimes go to the cinema or the theatre with my family – I love plays! Afterwards we eat in my favourite Italian restaurant. On Sunday mornings I stay in bed late, I don’t get up until 13.00! Sometimes in the afternoon I visit my brother. He lives in the country and has two children. My three sons like playing with their cousins, but we leave early because my children and my niece and nephew go to bed at 8.00 on Sunday evenings! They go to school early on Monday!
