[ 2 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH

Abraham negotiates with God in Genesis 18 about the number of righteous men needed if

Sodom is to be spared. That number was ten. The number 10 is significant because it forms a

minyan, which is the minimum number of men needed for worship. That is also why Abraham

could not go below that number.

During this sequestration I hope we have found ways to create and maintain new forms of

worship, such as livestreamed Masses, or family prayer. In this time of separation and isolation

I thought of how our predicament, in a small way, parallels that of the Apostles. Recall, that for

most of the 50 days from the Resurrection to Pentecost they too were isolated, for fear of

being recognized. The 11 Apostles, forming a minyan, were able to worship in their traditional

manner. Then Pentecost arrived and everything changed. On that day Christ’s cowering followers stepped out into the

world forever changing it.

Bishops across the country are planning for the time our Church will resume public

worship. Limitations likely to be imposed. We should anticipate changes to some practices, the introduction of new

ones. Some changes may be temporary, some not. Irrespective of any change, we should open ourselves to them as

the faithful did on Pentecost.

This is an exciting time to be Catholic as we are about to experience the most interesting event since Vatican II.

Why would we want to miss being part of a Church that will be changing and adapting to our new (and hopefully

temporary) situation?

While online Mass offers a time of peace, prayer and reflection, it lacks so much. It

cannot provide the sense of community created when we gather for worship. Absent is the sound of music, voices

joining in the recitation of the Creed and the Our Father. Also missing is the sense and aromas found only inside our

Churches. Beyond all else, never will I ever take for granted the beauty of solace found in the Eucharist.

Three things in closing.

• First, I look forward to the time when we all can join together to celebrate, console and inspire each other. • Second, please keep the leaders of our Parish in your prayers. Ask that we be guided by the Spirit in all matters. • Third, if circumstances allow, please remember to continue supporting the Parish, whose expenses are ongoing.

Until we meet again may God peace and blessing be with you all.

Deacon Kevin

WEEK AT A GLANCE

USCCB Priority Resources as

Regards to COVID-19 Through the good leadership of our shepherds, the Church is experiencing the remarkable grace of spiritual closeness from a distance. To the extent you may find it helpful, the Conference has been collecting examples of how our community of faith has sought to remain with one another in prayer during these difficult times. You may find the list here: http://www.usccb.org/coronavirus In the days ahead, we will update this page as we find and you share additional resources. USCCB Public Affairs and Episcopal Resources teams are partnering also with the Office of Divine Worship, the Office of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, and other Conference colleagues to develop new resources to help the faithful in our home prayer. These are being prepared for Catholic Current. Those resources are here: https://catholiccurrent.org/covid19/

Stewards Cornerston Stewards Holy Spirit

Pentecost Sunday

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1

CORINTHIANS 12:7

For Stewards to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we must open our hearts and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit

to guide your thoughts, words and actions every day! Be grateful for all

the gifts God has given you! Regardless of our individual

circumstances, God has given all of us many blessings. What we do with

those gifts is our gift back to God! By generously sharing everything we have and everything we are, we become

more “God-centered” and less “s elf-centered” and our lives truly reflect

God’s light, love and mercy.
