WelcometoHarrisburg!Thegoalforthisconferenceistostrengthenthebondbetweenart,designthinking,andeducation.WehaveinvitedkeynotespeakersthatwillhelpusexplorewhatdesigneducationisonFriday,findsomeideastostrengthentheteachingofdesignonSaturday,andmeetsometrulyinspiringdesignersonSaturdayandSunday. Ibelievethatteachingthedesignprocessassistsstudentsinthinkingcreatively,andthatteachingaboutdesignshouldbefundamentalinarteducation.Equippingstudentswiththeabilitytounderstandandemploydesignprocesseswillhelptoprepareour21stcenturystudentswhoareenteringaworkforcethatdesperatelyneedsemployeesthatarecreativeandabletosolveproblems.IDEO,anaward-winningglobaldesignfirmthattakesahuman-centered,design-basedapproachtohelpingorganizationsinthepublicandprivatesectorsinnovateandgrow,suggests: “Designthinkingisadeeplyhumanprocessthattapsintoabilitiesweallhavebutgetoverlookedbymoreconventionalproblem-solvingpractices.Itreliesonourabilitytobeintuitive,torecognizepatterns,toconstructideasthatareemotionallymeaningfulaswellasfunctional,andtoexpressourselvesthroughmeansbeyondwordsorsymbols.Nobodywantstorunanorganizationonfeeling,intuition,andinspiration,butanover-relianceontherationalandtheanalyticalcanbejustasrisky.Designthinkingprovidesanintegratedthirdway.”Asarteducators,wecantaketheleadonprovidingopportunitiesforourstudentstodevelopskillsthatwillbenefitthemintheircareerswellaftertheyleaveourclassrooms. TheconceptofholdingaPAEAConferenceusingDesignasathemewasbornfromaconversationbetweenseveralboardmembersandourloveofteachingdesign.WeknowtherearemanydesignloversinourvisualartsclassroomsacrossPennsylvaniaandwehopethatyouwillfindsupportandinspirationbyattendingthisconference.TheDesignConferencelogoisbasedonseveralideasthatwehopeyouwillenjoy:• Theshapeofthelogoisatrianglewhichisthemoststableofallformsbecauseitiswidest

atthebaseandtapersasitrises.EarlyEgyptianschosethisformfortheirmostsacredbuildings,recognizingit’sstrengthandstability.

• Thecolorsareblackplustheprimarycolorsusedinpublishing:cyan,magenta&yellow,betterknownasCMYK.

Each state will select a design which will be made into a 3’ x 5’ flag and flown in Washington, D.C. during the month of March.
