WelcometoHarrisburg!Thegoalforthisconferenceistostrengthenthebondbetweenart,designthinking,andeducation.WehaveinvitedkeynotespeakersthatwillhelpusexplorewhatdesigneducationisonFriday,findsomeideastostrengthentheteachingofdesignonSaturday,andmeetsometrulyinspiringdesignersonSaturdayandSunday. Ibelievethatteachingthedesignprocessassistsstudentsinthinkingcreatively,andthatteachingaboutdesignshouldbefundamentalinarteducation.Equippingstudentswiththeabilitytounderstandandemploydesignprocesseswillhelptoprepareour21stcenturystudentswhoareenteringaworkforcethatdesperatelyneedsemployeesthatarecreativeandabletosolveproblems.IDEO,anaward-winningglobaldesignfirmthattakesahuman-centered,design-basedapproachtohelpingorganizationsinthepublicandprivatesectorsinnovateandgrow,suggests: “Designthinkingisadeeplyhumanprocessthattapsintoabilitiesweallhavebutgetoverlookedbymoreconventionalproblem-solvingpractices.Itreliesonourabilitytobeintuitive,torecognizepatterns,toconstructideasthatareemotionallymeaningfulaswellasfunctional,andtoexpressourselvesthroughmeansbeyondwordsorsymbols.Nobodywantstorunanorganizationonfeeling,intuition,andinspiration,butanover-relianceontherationalandtheanalyticalcanbejustasrisky.Designthinkingprovidesanintegratedthirdway.”Asarteducators,wecantaketheleadonprovidingopportunitiesforourstudentstodevelopskillsthatwillbenefitthemintheircareerswellaftertheyleaveourclassrooms. EmilyPilloton,founderofProjectHDesign,anon-profit,humanitariandesigncompany,whostated:“…theworkmeanssomething,andeverydaywefeelthatsomethingpositiveishappening.”Ihopeyoufindthatthisyear’sconferencehelpsyoutodiscoverthattheworkofdesigneducationdoesmeansomething,andthatyouleavetheconferencewithasensethatsomethingpositiveistrulytakingplaceinartclassroomsacrossPennsylvaniaaswecommittogethertoincreaseourattentiontodesigneducation.

TheconceptofholdingaPAEAConferenceusingDesignasathemewasbornfromaconversationbetweenseveralboardmembersandourloveofteachingdesign.WeknowtherearemanydesignloversinourvisualartsclassroomsacrossPennsylvaniaandwehopethatyouwillfindsupportandinspirationbyattendingthisconference.TheDesignConferencelogoisbasedonseveralideasthatwehopeyouwillenjoy:• Theshapeofthelogoisatrianglewhichisthemoststableofallformsbecauseitiswidest

atthebaseandtapersasitrises.EarlyEgyptianschosethisformfortheirmostsacredbuildings,recognizingit’sstrengthandstability.
