Welcome to Pennine Lancashire MuseumsWelcome to Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools and our brochure for 2014/2015.
WHY ARE PENNINE LANCASHIRE MUSEUMS SPECIAL?Pennine Lancashire is home to some of the North West’s most lavish museum collections and architectural gems, thanks partly to the enormous wealth made from weaving cotton during the Industrial Revolution. It was during this golden age that industrialists and merchants donated money to build and fill museums with art and treasures. 150 years on and museums across Pennine Lancashire have built up an unparalleled collection of art and historical artefacts with national and international significance.
In addition many of the museums and galleries in Pennine Lancashire are located in beautiful parks, landscapes and natural habitats providing an amazing legacy for indoor and outdoor learning.
MUSEUMS AND SCHOOLS PROGRAMMEPennine Lancashire Museums have been working as part of a national programme called Museums and Schools. This programme aims to strengthen links between schools and their local museums and is funded by Arts Council England and the Department for Education.
Throughout this programme we have reviewed all of our learning sessions across the 9 venues, partnered with Sir John Soane and V&A museums in London to gain national museum support and worked hand in hand with teachers to develop learning sessions and activities that best meet the needs of schools and pupils today.
4
WE ARE ON YOUR DOORSTEPFrom the map above you will see that you have a Pennine Lancashire Museum near to your school, and you may be within easy distance of a few of our venues. We hope this brochure encourages you to take a closer look at the excellent learning experiences available locally.

CASE STUDY
Working with Local TeachersSince October 2012 the Museums and Schools Programme has given us the chance to develop new learning sessions in our museums in a completely new way. Teachers have visited our museums and been inspired by the collections, buildings and the sounds.
You know best what will fit with the curriculum, be it old or new, and seeing our museums through your eyes has been amazing.
Working together, we have created literacy and music sessions in Helmshore and Queen Street mills, geography sessions in Gawthorpe Textile Collection and Hall, storytelling sessions in Blackburn Museum and art activities in Towneley Hall and Clitheroe Castle.
We look forward to working with more teachers in the future. Read the case studies on these pages of two teachers we have worked with, and come visit our museums and be inspired!
’Minibeasts’ trial session at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery.
Minibeasts with Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery
Kirsteen Walmsley, Bolton-by-Bowland CE Primary School I have always loved anything historical
– blame my parents for dragging me round castles and cathedrals as a child! Throughout secondary school I took ‘A’ levels in history, classics and archaeology, so really I had to become a teacher…or work on ‘Time Team’.
I have been teaching since 1995, initially in Blackburn, then in 1997 I ‘escaped to the country’ to teach at Bolton-by-Bowland CE Primary. We are a very tiny, rural primary school – just 2 classes. I have Early Years, Reception, Y1 and Y2 whilst 2 other teachers share the KS2 class.
I was drawn to this project, not just for the chance to visit such fantastic museums in London as the V&A, Sir John Soane’s and the Hunterian, but more as a chance to really have a voice as an infant teacher. More often than not, school trips are focused towards secondary school or KS2 children. KS1 children are too often
‘adapted for’ as a bit of an after- thought. Infant children are seldom given enough credit for what they can do, or what level of understanding they can achieve. I hope my interpretation of this project will go a little way towards addressing this misconception.
Currently I am teaching between Bolton-by-Bowland and Grindleton Infant classes (we share the same headteacher under a collaboration that has been in place for the last 5 years). We took both Infant classes to trial this project and they had an amazing time - mainly thanks to Steve’s unending knowledge of beetles (or coleoptera as we now know they are called).
I hope other schools try the project and get as much fun and learning out of it as we did.

Design Your Own Museum
When I heard about the Pennine Lancashire Museums project, I wanted to get involved as I saw it as in interesting opportunity to develop something that would broaden the experiences of the children who attend my school.
The idea of setting up a museum in the classroom isn’t new but after visiting several of the venues I saw that they offered both a wide range of experiences for children and expertise amongst their staff.
In the end I chose to work with three of the Pennine Lancashire museums – Helmshore Mill, Towneley Hall and Clitheroe Castle.
Our introductory visit was to Helmshore and there we learnt what a museum was for; we also went on a ‘town trail’ around the mill village and had a go at modelling our own mill village.
At Towneley Hall we did a carousel of activities, the museum staff taught
the children about how to handle objects safely and display them. We also did a fabulous art activity and had a guided walk in the woods, linked to our science topic.
Our final trip was to Clitheroe Castle where we learned how to write labels, how to make our displays interactive and found out from the shop and café staff what their jobs entailed.
Then during the summer term, the children from the two classes worked together to create their own exhibition at school, to which all the families in the school were invited.
I’ve really enjoyed the project and I’ve been delighted at how much has been done; working across whole terms has given us the opportunity to work in a cross-curricular way, drawing in the foundation subjects – art (all the children are completing their Discover level Arts Award), history and geography, as well.
One of the real benefits of the project has been the way in which the trips have really sparked the children’s interest and how their enthusiasm has drawn in their families.

Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools 2014/15Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery
As one of the first purpose built free museums to open outside of London in 1874, Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery houses a rich and fascinating collection covering fine art, decorative art, Egyptology, coins, manuscripts, natural history, social history and South Asia. A visit is a great way to inspire your pupils and support both teaching and learning in the classroom.
We have long experience of working with schools and our staff will help to bring your curriculum to life. We appreciate that all classes differ in their needs and abilities and are happy to tailor a session to your particular class, please contact us to discuss.
Through our partnership with Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools we are delighted to be able to offer two brand new learning sessions developed with local teachers that tailor the needs of pupils with the wonderful collections we have on offer.
If your pupils are studying ancient Egypt then come and see our Egyptology collection. The gallery, a dedicated Egyptology space, is home to the most requested and sought after item in the whole museum, the Mummy.
Parts of the Egyptian collection were collected by John Garstang who was not only one of the great early Egyptologists but also a son of Blackburn. Born and schooled in the town, the objects he gave to the museum give our Egyptian collection a link to both Blackburn and a country far away.
Special Collection
Come and see the ‘Cottontown’ Gallery which looks at the industrial history of the town, the ‘Skill and Labour’ gallery which focuses on the social history of the town after 1750 and the ‘Early History Gallery’ which looks at the history of Blackburn from the Iron Age until the 1750’s. Objects include power and hand looms, a cruck frame from a local inn and a collection of Victoriana from the town’s heyday.

We Visit YouPennine Lancashire Museums like to be as flexible as possible when it comes to bringing the curriculum to life for your pupils.
We recognise that sometimes it is more appropriate for our staff to come into school to deliver a session in your classroom. Our aim is to really bring the subject to life, getting your pupils all ‘fired up’ about a new topic or revising and reinforcing a topic that they’ve just finished.
For more information about our range of outreach sessions, contact Gill Brailey (01772 534090) or Stephen Irwin (01254 667130)
Each session offers the chance to handle and use genuine artefacts and replica objects. Some of our outreach sessions are delivered in costume – you could rent a Tommy for the day, or a Roman, or a Victorian schoolteacher…
Cost: £95 half day, £150 a full day

For more information on loan boxes from LCC please contact:
Carole Marsh on 01772 534067.Email: [email protected]
Charges apply for loan boxes but vary depending on the provider and number of loans. Full details are available from the contacts above.

Arts Award
Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools 2014/15
This is a great way for children and young people to be inspired by and enjoy the arts whilst achieving nationally recognised introductory and accredited awards. Did you know that your children can complete the key sections of their Arts Awards by working with Pennine Lancashire’s Museums? By taking part in a museum visit, children can discover rich cultural heritage from art and craft to sculpture, architecture and design.
In an innovative approach to the Discover and Explore Arts Award Levels, Pennine Lancashire Museums have produced bespoke log-books. These are a great way for children to collect evidence of their Arts Award journey both during their visit and back at school.
We hope you are inspired to help your children achieve Arts Awards. If so, please contact Steph Hawke at Curious Minds [email protected] and take a look at the Arts Award website www.artsaward.org.uk
As the North West Bridge Organisation, Curious Minds works with Arts Council England to connect children and young people with great art and culture. We are pleased to be working in partnership on the Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools Programme.
Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England working with Curious Minds.
