Welcome to Pennine Lancashire Museums Welcome to Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools 2015/16.

MUSEUMS AND SCHOOLSPennine Lancashire Museums are working as part of a National Programme called Museums and Schools with the aim of strengthening links between schools and their local museums. Through this programme in Pennine Lancashire, we aim to offer better, more relevant learning sessions that are developed with the help of and consultation with local teachers.

We have reviewed and refined many of our sessions in line with the new national curriculum and what local teachers and schools say they want from the museums they visit.

NEW FOR 2015/16Ribchester Roman Museum has joined Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools Programme. As the only specialist Roman Museum in the whole of the North West, it offers an amazing insight into this topic and a practical and interactive learning session for all.

Full details of their learning offer can be found on page 26.

DIGITAL REALITYWe’ve embraced the digital revolution and from Sept 2015 we are launching ‘Digital Reality’ in four museums. See page 6 for more details and be one of the first schools to experience this.

MORE ONLINEFrom July 2015 there will be many more learning resources available to view and download from our website learningwithplm.org.uk including video trailers showing the digital reality tours.

WHY ARE PENNINE LANCASHIRE MUSEUMS SO SPECIAL?Pennine Lancashire is home to some of the North West’s most lavish museum collections and architectural and historical gems. This is thanks partly to the enormous wealth made from weaving cotton during the Industrial Revolution and also due to the importance of the region in both Norman and Roman times.

Pennine Lancashire Museums have built up an unparalleled collection of art and historical artefacts with national and international significance. In addition many of the museums and galleries are located in beautiful parks, landscapes and natural habitats providing an exceptional indoor and outdoor learning experience.

Digital Reality in our Museums

learningwithplm.org.uk/digital-reality

See films, hear sounds and noises, get close ups of working machinery and have a fun yet in depth learning experience which brings the museum alive and shows you parts you cannot reach on a normal tour or learning session.

Throughout the museums there are activation points that trigger films, sounds and animations for you to watch and hear through hand held tablets.

The four Digital Reality Tours are:

Helmshore Mills Textile Museum – Meet Eddie your personal virtual guide who will take you round the mill to hear and see the machinery.

Queen Street Mill Textile Museum – Hear about the textile industry as it really was. This tour will dispel many of the myths that have grown up around the textile industry.

Clitheroe Castle Museum – Go time travelling around the castle and its keep and see it build up over time with the help of Gareth the Wyvern Dragon

Turton Tower – Soundscapes help you imagine what life was like living at Turton Tower via soundclips being played as you move from room to room.

These tours will be launched throughout the rest of 2015 and 2016 and can be used as an addition to your learning session or as a stand alone. Trailers showing what you can expect at each venue can be viewed at learningwithplm.org.uk/digital-reality

Ask about digital reality tours when you enquire about your learning session.

Four Pennine Lancashire Museums are unveiling a brand new experience for pupils and teachers. Digital reality tours have been created which offer a great new way to experience the museum, its stories, history and characters.

We Visit YouPennine Lancashire Museums like to be as flexible as possible when it comes to bringing the curriculum to life for your pupils.

We recognise that sometimes it is more appropriate for our staff to come into school to deliver a session in your classroom. Our aim is to really bring the subject to life, getting your pupils all ‘fired up’ about a new topic or revising and reinforcing a topic that they’ve just finished.

Each session offers the chance to handle and use genuine artefacts and replica objects. Some of our outreach sessions are delivered in costume – you could rent a Tommy for the day, or a Roman, or a Victorian schoolteacher…

For more information about our range of outreach sessions, contact Gill Brailey 01772 534090 or Stephen Irwin 01254 667130

Cost: £95 half day, £150 a full day

Our loan boxes are a great way of bringing a little bit of the museum into your classroom. The boxes contain a wide range of historical artefacts, replica objects and useful resources and can be used to inspire a range of classroom activities which deliver desired learning outcomes with enjoyment and fun.

Loan Boxes

The objects may be handled by the children or used for a classroom display. There is nothing like the real thing to convey to a child how heavy a steel helmet is or the texture of an ancient Egyptian pot.

For more information on loan boxes from Lancashire County Council Museum Loans Service please contact:

Arts Award

This is a great way for children and young people to be inspired by and enjoy the arts whilst achieving nationally recognised introductory and accredited awards. Did you know that your children can complete the key sections of their Arts Awards by working with Pennine Lancashire’s Museums? By taking part in a museum visit, children can discover rich cultural heritage from art and craft to sculpture, architecture and design. In an innovative approach to the Discover and Explore Arts Award Levels, Pennine Lancashire Museums

have produced bespoke log-books. These are a great way for children to collect evidence of their Arts Award journey both during their visit and back at school.

Arts Award Discover or Explore can run alongside half a term’s work and a visit to one of our museums. Costs of moderation and certificates range from £1.25 to £10 depending on the Arts Award level and the numbers of pupils taking part. Interested in finding out more?

Contact Gill Brailey 01772 534090 or Steve Irwin 01254 667130

Take a look at the Arts Award website

As the North West Bridge Organisation, Curious Minds works with Arts Council England to connect children and young people with great art and culture. We are pleased to be working in partnership on the Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools Programme.

Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England working with Curious Minds.

Arts Award is all about encouraging and inspiring children and young people up to age 25 to find out about art and culture, take part in creative activities and share their learning.

“Inspired By…” Sessions just for teachers

These gave teachers the time and space to recharge their creative batteries and work with professional artists, designers and makers.

In 2014/15 teachers came to sessions at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum, the Haworth Art Gallery and Helmshore Mills Textile Museum and had an inspiring time, and most of all they asked for more of the same please!

For 2015/16 we are delighted to offer our own ‘Inspired By’ sessions where you can enjoy meeting other creative teachers, try out new techniques, develop your own creative talents and get inspiration to take back to the classroom.

Session dates and details will be featured on learningwithplm.org.uk and via Lancashire County Council’s schools portal.

Comments from teachers:

We have been inspired by the excellent Sanctuary teacher sessions held at the V&A, one of our national museum partners, so throughout 2014 and 2015 we worked with learning staff from the V&A to develop our own version of Sanctuary sessions.

‘Fab, refreshing, lively, uninhibiting – let’s get more going!’

‘I need to do more of this and see more galleries. Thanks for the inspiration.’

‘A great evening, entertaining, interesting and informative… thank you.’

If your pupils are studying ancient Egypt then come and see our Egyptology collection. The gallery, a dedicated Egyptology space, is home to the most requested and sought after item in the whole museum, the Mummy.

Parts of the Egyptian collection were collected by John Garstang who was not only one of the great early Egyptologists but also a son of Blackburn. Born and schooled in the town, the objects he gave to the museum give our Egyptian collection a link to both Blackburn and a country far away.

Half day / KS2/3 / History/Science

The immersive and experiential session gives pupils the opportunity to be an active part of the year 1066. They will witness the rise and fall of the last Anglo Saxon kings, be party to the invasions of both Vikings and Normans and participate in three battles. There will also be a chance to examine and handle Norman and Saxon arms and armour, study and compare the differences and see how they were used in battle.

Pupils will then use the skills and knowledge learned to design and construct armour …for an egg! They will test their armour using the ancient method of the ‘long drop’ to see who is crowned ‘Champion of the egg’.

Half day / KS2/3 / History/Science

Follow a historical, interactive and hands on tour of the Norman keep, whilst taking in the spectacular views over Clitheroe and the surrounding area. Find out how castles were built, what they were made from, how they were defended and how and why they changed.

Then get to grips with a range of exciting, hands-on-activities that will enliven and support a range of cross curricular skills. Build your own Motte and Bailey castle utilising key ideas you have learnt on the tour. Older pupils will explore the science behind trebuchets and catapults as they use these principles to attack an enemy castle.

Half day / KS1/2 / Literacy

Come and meet our Dragon Protection Officer and enrol in SWORD (Society for the Welfare Of Rare Dragons).

In this exciting and immersive session pupils will be taught all the skills they need to become a SWORD Ranger.

Pupils will discover the secret history of SWORD, how to identify different dragons, discover where they live, what they eat, their likes and dislikes, what makes them so scary, and how to care for them. They will explore and train in the sword and shield techniques that will keep them safe from angry dragons, and those skills needed to stop Dragon Slayers. Once the tasks are completed take a seat and hear the tale of ‘The Clitheroe Dragon’.

Half day / KS1 / Art

This art activity is based on the fabulous glass vases in our collection and is suitable for younger children. After being inspired by the real thing, the children get to recreate it in collage form.

Half day / KS2 / Art

Using the mosaic patterns and designs in our Tiffany collection as inspiration, this activity introduces your group to the technique of creating a mosaic using multi-coloured paper squares, rectangles and triangles.

Half day / KS1/2 / Art

This is an ideal activity to introduce your group to printing techniques. We will tailor it to your children depending on whether they are KS1 or KS2. The blocks are then used to create either a group banner or individual gift boxes.

Half day / KS3/4 / Art

We have a lot of experience working with SEN/CLD pupils and we’ve devised this session specifically for them. The children take part in a range of sensory art and craft activities based on the colours, patterns and shapes to be found in our galleries.

History is brought to life for your pupils at Queen Street Mill; the last surviving 19th century steam powered mill in the world!

Hear the clatter of 300 Lancashire power looms in our weaving shed and witness the heat, smells and noise of the historic steam engine ‘Peace’. Learn about the lives of people who worked at the mill and trace

the journey of how cotton yarn was transformed into woven calico. Our exciting session, the Queen Street Mill Maths Challenge, gives pupils the opportunity to apply maths to ‘real-life’ situations in the mill.

The most significant and now unique aspect of Queen Street’s collection is the machinery which has been preserved in situ in full working order, including the original Lancashire boiler, the steam engine Peace and the 19th century looms connected to it.

Find out about local inventor James Bullough who made important improvements to the design of the Lancashire Loom, which went on to revolutionise the textile manufacturing industry for a century.

Ribchester Roman Museum

Ribchester Roman Museum’s favourite objects include the replica of the Ribchester Parade Helmet and the impressive sculpture of a cavalryman riding down his Celtic adversary. The displays also delve into the Prehistoric past and are illustrated by wonderful objects like the amazingly well preserved Bronze Age sword and Iron Age brooches and carvings.

Visitors to the Museum can also see the granaries that were used for storing large volumes of wheat and other foodstuffs. Part of the defensive ditch that was dug around the fort can be seen in the field opposite the west gate of the fort and there are also remains of the Roman baths behind the primary school. The impressive columns that hold up the White Bull pub in the centre of the village are genuine Roman artefacts.

SPECIAL COLLECTION LOCAL STORY

In the reign of Emperor Vespasian (AD 69) an important Roman fort (Bremetennacum Veteranorum), was established to guard the Ribble Valley and the junction of several important roads at Ribchester.

Roman Ribchester is brought to life by dramatic displays, which contain a life size cavalryman, Roman legionary and exciting interactive exhibits. Columns have been erected for the first time in 2000 years and there are wonderful objects, including weaponry, jewellery and leatherwork.

Since 1914 there has been a purpose built museum to accommodate all the Roman material and cultural evidence discovered at the site. Ribchester Roman Museum, located in this picturesque and tranquil village, is Lancashire’s only specialist Roman Museum.

Ribchester is in increasing demand as an educational resource. The Museum caters for school parties of all ages and abilities but specialises in educational visits for primary school children studying the Romans as part of National Curriculum Key Stage 2.

26

Page 27: Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools Brochure 2015/16

3. Armour - One of the most exciting parts of the day is when children try on the replica armour and helmets. They learn about the most important equipment and weapons and what life would have been like in the Roman army.

4. Fort - Children are shown the visible remains of the fort outside the Museum. They include the granaries and west rampart. The class can also visit the remains of the bathhouse although they are not part of the tour. They are, however, well served by easily interpreted information boards.

Half day (2hrs) / KS2 / History

1. Introductory Talk - A short introductory talk sets the scene and includes where the Romans come from, the spread of the empire, the reasons for and the history of, the conquest of Britain, progress north and Ribchester: the fort and village settlement.

2. Roman Objects - The children are shown and are able to handle real Roman artefacts including fragments of pottery, bones and metal objects. They are encouraged to think about what they are handling by assessing physical features, function, design and value.

Pennine Lancashire Museums and Schools 2015/16

THE ROMANS

5. Museum - This part involves looking around the exhibition to look at the great diversity of Roman objects and vibrant displays including the recently installed interactive model of Roman Ribchester.

6. Project Time - Time can be set aside for pupils to undertake their own project under the guidance and supervision of the teacher in charge. Help is on hand to answer any questions.

7. Alternative formats - Educational sessions need not be rigid: if you would like us to emphasise a particular topic or have any other particular requirements, we will gladly discuss any suggestions or ideas you may have.
