Educating problem-solvers and innovatorsABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

The School of Engineering at Penn State Behrend gives students the opportunity to learn in state-of-the-art facilities, conduct research with award-winning faculty, and be re-cruited by companies around the world. Ranked among the top undergraduate engineering programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report, the school offers both engineer-ing and engineering technology programs to accommodate diverse learning styles and career goals. Small class sizes allow students to work closely with faculty, while design and research projects, internships, and co-ops provide practical engineering experience. Graduates are recruited by compa-nies around the country and world; more than 95 percent are employed in their field within a year of graduation.

AccreditationThe following programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), abet.org: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Software Engineering.

The following programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET: Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology (A.ENGT.), and Mechani-cal Engineering Technology (A.ENGT.).

Undergraduate ResearchPenn State Behrend annually awards nearly $350,000 in undergraduate research grants to fund hands-on learning opportunities for its students. Every Behrend student is eligible for a grant (typically $1,200 a semester) after completing an application process that includes selecting a faculty mentor, developing a research project, and writing a formal proposal. Each spring the college hosts a regional undergraduate research conference where university students publically present their research and creative work.

Mechanical Engineering Technology, B.S.Mechanical Engineering Technology students are taught the application of mechanical theory in areas of computer-aided design and engineering, manufacturing processes, thermal and fluid sciences, materials, and mechanical design.

Plastics Engineering Technology, B.S. This plastics-specific major is one of only four accredited programs in the United States. Our program is a world leader in undergraduate applied research and development in plas-tics. Students learn about the design of plastics’ components and products, processing methods, and materials. They also study technical and management issues.

Software Engineering, B.S. Penn State Behrend has the only undergraduate Software En-gineering program within Penn State. Software engineers are programmers who analyze, design, implement, and maintain software systems; Money magazine has consistently listed software engineer as a Best Job in America in recent years.

Master of Manufacturing Management, M.M.M.Designed to meet the needs of industry leadership, the M.M.M. approaches manufacturing as a global enterprise requiring a unique set of engineering, business, quality, and communication skills. This 32-credit program typically can be completed in two years of part-time study.

Two-Year Associate Degrees Electrical Engineering Technology, A.ENGT.Mechanical Engineering Technology, A.ENGT.

Minors Penn State Behrend offers more than twenty minors from which students in the School of Engineering can choose to complement their major field of study. Two business minors are offered as part of the unique collaboration between the School of Engineering and the Black School of Business: Operations and Supply Chain Management and Technical Sales.

DEGREE PROGRAMSComputer Engineering, B.S.Immerse yourself in the creative processes used to design and produce the platforms that our digital world rests upon. You’ll examine the operation and application of computing equipment, from the smallest transistor to the latest archi-tectures, and apply what you’ve learned in self-directed research projects.

Computer Science, B.S.Computer Science students study the fundamentals— discrete math, data structures, and analysis and design of algorithms—before delving into hands-on projects related to rapidly-evolving technologies such as real-time operating systems, information security, image processing, computer graphics, data mining, and cryptography.

Electrical Engineering, B.S. Electrical engineers are problem-solvers well-versed in the design, analysis, and operation of electrical systems. Electri-cal engineering encompasses a large number of disciplines; electrical engineers specialize in areas such as microelec-tronics, communications, signal processing, control systems, computers, neural networks, and robotics.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, B.S.Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology Unique to Penn State Behrend, this major offers a strong foundation in electrical and electronic systems design, microprocessor applications, automation, instrumentation and control, computer programming, electrical testing, plant engineering, quality control management, and technical sales and service.

Industrial Engineering, B.S.Industrial Engineering gives students the opportunity to get involved in the design, operation, and improvement of a broad range of engineering, industrial, and business systems. Studies include calculus, science, probability and statistics, engineering economics, product and manufactur-ing system design, information technology, ergonomics, and optimization.

Interdisciplinary Business with Engineering Studies, B.S. One of only a handful of similar programs nationwide, IBE is a business degree jointly administered with the Black School of Business. The program prepares students to perform on the business side of a technical company in management, operations, sales, or quality.

Mechanical Engineering, B.S.Mechanical engineering is one of the largest engineering disciplines. Studies begin in mathematics, mechanics, and thermodynamics and progress to courses in machine design, heat transfer, and system dynamics. Mechanical engineers work in research and development, product design, manu-facturing, procurement, technical sales, and management.
