Hopefully it will be underway sometime next term. You may have also seen the recent announcement of school infrastructure projects. Our school was one of the schools identified on that list for building. We hope to have more exciting information on the project to share in the near future. One of the areas of focus in our three year plan has been work on learning intentions and success criteria . A learning intention for a lesson or series of lessons is a statement, created by the teacher or collaboratively with the class that describes clearly what the teacher wants the students to know, understand, and be able to do as a result of learning and teaching activities. Success criteria are linked to learning intentions. They are developed by the teacher and/or the student and describe what success looks like. They help the teacher and student to make judgements about the quality of student learning. Our staff and students are using these in a variety of ways which have enhanced student learning. Over the past two years we have used several professional learning sessions each term to learn more about these and also to develop staff expertise in their use. After each session staff have developed a specific goal in the area to work on. It has been great to hear and share the successes, teachers are having in using learning intentions and success criteria and building on their current expertise. Though people are using them in different ways they are being used very powerfully to frame the learning and make the learning purpose explicit and clear. In the upper primary work around collaboratively developing the intention and success criteria and using these for self assessment and critiquing is a very effective to develop student understanding of their own learning. They are very visible in rooms and children are using the language of the intentions to talk about and focus their learning. I have included some teacher feedback on their more recent goals later in this newsletter. Have a safe and happy holiday. Term 3 commences on Tuesday 18.7.17 for students. Gabrielle Buczynski

FROM THE PRINCIPAL We are currently finalising plans for a garden/ play area in our grounds. The area, close to the silver seats in our playground, will focus on providing veggie garden space and interactive play area. The P&C are fundraising to contribute to the plans.

They are very visible in rooms and children are using the language of the intentions to talk about and focus their learning. I have included some teacher feedback on their more recent goals later in this newsletter.

Have a safe and happy holiday. Term 3 commences on Tuesday 18.7.17 for students.

Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

From Mr Stone 4/5S

In 4/5S we used poetry to begin writing shared

learning intentions/success criteria (LI/SC) with the

class. Drafting the intention was harder than the

success criteria. Students had a good idea of what

was needed to construct an effective poem. We

decided to include listening too and acting upon

critique and feedback as an aspect for success. Also

looked at use of high quality language and

structure/punctuation for imagery and flow. The first

attempt was an effective learning intentions/success

criteria. Kids were heard referring back to it and the

step where evidence of revision forced several drafts

before publishing allowing for them to identify many

areas to improve.

From Ms El Marswi- Sinwan (KL)

I have predominantly used LISC during independent

and modelled writing, where the students are learning

the basic structure and specifics needed in a sentence,

i.e: capital letter. Throughout the sessions I refer back

to LISC and have got some student's to even correct

their own work. I have successfully implemented LISC

with kindy by also doing a reflection/discussion circle.

Students have shown and read their work aloud and

are able to say 'yes/no' I have done, used or achieved

this.

From Mrs Mufale 5/6M

The last few weeks my goal I’ve been focusing on

is co-constructing rubrics with 5/6M. The purpose of

my goal was to extend student’s knowledge of

success criteria from just a simple checklist to

an effective and differentiated list.

We recently created a rubric for persuasive writing. In

groups of three, students were asked to break one

success criteria into 5 levels (outstanding, high, sound,

basic and limited). We then combined all the groups

ideas to create a rubric. During our reflection, students

discussed how powerful rubrics can be at the

beginning of tasks or projects as they are a clear

indication of what the end product should look like.

Students were encouraged to self-assess their own

writing using the co-constructed rubric and to ask a

peer to use the rubric to provide feedback. This was

extremely powerful as students strived to move up the

rubric and levels in order to improve their writing.

5/6M are working towards creating more rubrics.

From Mrs Wierzbicki

I have been implementing LI/SC in my Stage 1

Reading Groups. As it is a targeting Reading Program,

I have found having LI/SC very useful as the students

are constantly referring back to it during the lesson

(My LI is 'We can be good readers). It also helps them

to remember the important components needed for

them to become successful readers and they get very

excited when they meet a SC during the lesson.

Debating

On Wednesday the 21st of June,

Pendle Hill Public School debated

against Merrylands Public School.

The topic for the debate was ‘We

should learn more about our world’.

We were the negative team. The

debaters were Sierra, Aanya,

Veanthan and Reethi. On the day of

the debate unfortunately Reethi (our

advisor) was sick. The debate kept us

on our toes all the way. The

chairman took a long time to decide

the winner. It all came down to

statistics the other team presented.

They won! We congratulated them

for their win!

SRC Fundraisers

The SRC have raised $349 over two

fundraising events this year. The first

being the Easter egg guessing

competition in Term One and the

other was a mufti day in Term Two

where all children got to dress up in

their favourite sport team colours.

There were many sports teams

represented on the day.

Money raised will go towards

purchasing school playground sports equipment. Thank you to all who participated in these events.
