No Chair’s Report this time as our wonderful June retired at the beginning of May. She has done so much for Pembury in the past 10 years as Chairman and has, on many many occasions gone beyond the call of duty. She has been a source of inspiration to us all and we wish her well in her retirement.

On 14th May the Parish Council elected David Coleman as the new Chair.

THANK YOU. I am totally overwhelmed by the love and generosity you have shown me over my retirement. My lovely colleagues on the Parish Council organised a wonderful afternoon at the Village Hall with so many of you from the village who I have come to admire and care for. The hall was beautifully decorated, huge array of food and a stunning cake, and some really outstanding gifts for which I’m truly grateful.

That well-known thespian and playwright Patrick Gillan produced two playlets with the help of the Pembury Players in my honour! I hadn’t realised I used tasers on Councillors during meetings so I can only guess it’s the look I might have when something isn’t right! The other play was as Agony Aunt to our M.P. Greg Clark, not sure how he felt about that, but I think he took it in a good-natured way!

A huge thank you to my friends who gave speeches about my time on the Council - that was when a few tears started; in fact, it totally finished me off when I spotted my family who had come up from Somerset and Sally and Dave Osborn from Norfolk who I miss enormously.

It has been a huge honour to be part of a pro-active Council and to be in a position to help where I can. I am going to miss being part of this team but I do hope they will ask me to do a little bit in the future.

Thank you all for your cards and flowers and your good wishes, it all means so much to me.

Sincere Regards, June

PEMBURY PEOPLE - IDA CHAMINGS

This issue we feature a face that will be familiar to all in the Village. Ida Chamings is the Pharmacist at Pembury Pharmacy. So what is her story?

“It’s a long way from West Tyrone to Pembury and not just in miles. Home was a small hill farm in a remote area of Northern Ireland, speaking a language we called English but you would not recognise. Our mother’s death when we were very young meant that we were initially brought up by our father. The very close bond with him continued after he remarried. He had basic training in animal medicine and I was his faithful shadow, holding the syringe, learning to calculate the dose and injecting large animals and helping when they gave birth. No wonder a medical career beckoned, but in my case I wanted human rather than animal medicine.

Our peaceful remote existence was no guarantee of safety when the troubles started. Suddenly we had to lock doors and cars, and be careful everywhere we went. Social life for us as teenagers was seriously restricted, leading me and many of my friends to look at universities outside of Ireland. It was a great day when I walked out of Brighton station to look down Queens Road at the sunlight sparkling on the sea. I knew that only twenty-four hours earlier a young soldier had dropped on one knee training his rifle on me as I crossed a deserted street in grey Belfast. I knew I would never go back.

Work was essential to supplement my student grant – no loans and no debts back then, and Brighton provided plenty of opportunity. In the local pharmacy I learned to make huge quantities of cough mixture and indigestion remedies, all bottled up and neatly labelled. I was working in Boots when decimal currency was introduced to people who thought they were being robbed! How do you explain that half a crown is only worth twelve and a half pence?

I met my husband Tony in a pub. He had a white Triumph Herald which I named Gabriel, pretty obvious to anyone with a religious upbringing! Back then everyone had a nodding dog on the parcel shelf but we had a ginger cat. He came to Tony’s Mum’s house every Sunday for his roast beef. Eventually he deserted us for a warmer house next door but he had taught us to love the eccentricity of cats and to pander to their whims ever since.

Tony and I were married in Brighton and lived there for another three years, in a little terraced house with a tiny square of garden. I packed it with plants and wanted more space. Changes at work brought us to Edenbridge to a house with room for children. Danny was born in 1980 and I gave up work to be a mum. Six weeks later Tony was made redundant. Jobs were hard to obtain as recession took hold and I was very soon back to work as a locum pharmacist. Four years later Rob was born and I needed to be at home doing accounts for my husband’s thriving telecoms company.

I first came to Pembury pharmacy when Peter and Janet Ditchett retired and the new owners took over. At first I was the Wednesday locum but I must have impressed someone because I was asked to work full time. I offered to stay two years and here I am 15 years later.

There have been lots of changes in the last 15 years. My boys are both married, one about to do it for the second time, and three little grandchildren. The pharmacy has also seen

some changes. The first refit was dirty, stressful and sometimes dangerous but we had to work through it. Tempers often frayed. We only closed part of a Saturday when the wall and staircase were removed. Unfortunately the rubble was still there on Monday morning, so our pharmacy ladies had to sort those builders out.

More recently we had an extension built on the back of the dispensary, less traumatic than the last time and giving us so much more work space. This time we didn’t fight with the builders but blamed the architect when water poured through the ceiling. It all seems to be mended now but the bucket is always ready if we spot a drip!

I live in Pembury now but have not cut my ties with Edenbridge, remaining a member of the church and continuing to work with the Sunday School. We also own a plot of land where a new house will be built and a large muddy field to be turned into our dream garden.

Pembury is an interesting place to work, because it is a village whose people appreciate what they have and support local events. We frequently support charities where members of our staff are involved, most recently a cake sale to raise money for rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. You always donate generously and this is my opportunity to say thank you and long may you continue to visit the pharmacy.”

I am sure we would all like to say thank you to Ida and her team for helping to keep us all healthy.

RICHARD SNOW

REFURBISHED WAR MEMORIAL TO BE UNVEILED

National celebrations to mark the Centenary of the end of WW1 are taking place throughout the United Kingdom on Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 11.11.18 this year. Pembury will be marking the occasion by unveiling a newly refurbished and cleaned War Memorial on that day.

I have been passionate for some years about replacing the very tarnished metal plaques on the War Memorial. In addition I have found 8 spelling errors in the names on the Memorial. The Parish Council have kindly agreed to add one new name (Jim H. Woodhams) to the WW1 names and correct the existing errors. Money has been very generously donated locally by Kent County Councillor Paul Barrington-King, The Parish Council, The Pembury Society, Churches, local Businesses and individuals to carry out this work. The new plaques will be carved in stone and the work is being carried out by Burslem of Tunbridge Wells. Burslem will also be adding the names of Thomas G Cook and Jim H Woodhams to the wooden plaques in the Upper Church and cleaning them.

The “new” Memorial is due to be unveiled on Remembrance Sunday, where the Service will be held outside this year and all are invited to attend this special occasion. It is hoped that the Parade will start this year from the Recreation Ground. It is planned, weather permitting, that a 1930’s Tiger Moth will drop 10,000 Poppies.

In addition, David Dore, a local cinematographer, is kindly producing a film called “Pembury Remembers”, which will mark the occasion and include background material.

The names to be corrected are:

WW1Douglas Mac-Dougall (Should be MacDougall)

Albert Mc’Queen(should be McQueen)

Albert and Thomas Penticost (should be Pentecost)

Sydney Ratcliffe (should be Sidney)

WW2 – Edward Crossley(should be Edmund)

William Parks(should be Parkes)

John Philbeam (should be Pilbeam)

Further details will be available nearer the time.

Richard Snow

Pembury Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Snow for his brilliant efforts in raising the funds needed to replace the plaques on the village war memorial. With great passion, determination and energy he has single-handedly raised the amount needed to remove the brass plaques and replace them with stone. As we go to press, the amount raised stands at £8040 (£2000 of which has been donated by Paul Barrington-King from his members’ grant) - an outstanding achievement, thank you so much Richard!

Cllr Mrs Susan Sharp

HERITAGE WEEKEND - SEPTEMBER 14-16, 2018

FLOWER FESTIVAL – PARISH CHURCH (THE OLD CHURCH)

Following the article in the Spring Edition of the Pembury Village News a number of local businesses and organisations have expressed a wish to be involved in the Flower Festival for the Heritage weekend in September. The Browning Society will be represented, as the theme for the display will be based on one of his poems with an autumnal flavour!

If you have not been in touch, please don’t feel that it is too late. We are hoping for a church overflowing with flowers and floral displays to celebrate this building, which will be open for visitors for the weekend. On both Saturday and Sunday refreshments will be available throughout the day. Hopefully the weather will be kind, and as the Old Church is part of a group of local churches connected by footpaths, we also hope that walkers will take the opportunity to visit – there will be a plan of the footpaths available at the church.

On Saturday evening, September 15 there will be a concert featuring music by Mozart for piano, viola and clarinet, settings of “Browning songs” and other pieces. More information will be available in the village nearer the time.

Please do contact us if you are interested, in helping with the teas and coffees, with a donation of flowers from your garden and/or greenery, just with help or in being part of the flower display team. We hope it will be a special weekend to remember.

JUNE’S AFTERNOON TEA

At the turn of the New Year, our Chair at the Parish Council, June Crowhurst, announced that, reluctantly, the time had come for her to stand down from the many activities and duties involved in the role, and that this would take effect from May 2018.

It was decided that we could not let her go quietly, and so it was in an atmosphere of both joyfulness and sadness that a large group of friends, family, colleagues and fellow Councillors met in the Village Hall, on an early Spring afternoon, to celebrate the work and successes June has achieved as both a Councillor and then Chairman of Pembury Parish Council over the past 14 years.

The Hall was decked out with a nostalgic theme, floral bunting, tablecloths and napkins, with a showpiece samovar and the strains of Frank Sinatra in the background. A traditional English afternoon tea with cakes galore, savouries and June’s favourite cuppa were on hand for all guests, many of whom had travelled some distance to be there.

Everyone was entertained by members of Pembury Players who staged two very

humorous skits, imaginatively based on the fictional goings-on at the Parish Council, which caused much laughter at the expense of some rather well-known guests, who took it all in good part.

Speeches were given and presentations made, together with anecdotal memories of June’s service to the community and unanimous praise and thanks for everything she had accomplished.

A fabulous cake in June’s favourite colours was duly cut and shared, with party bags made up for those who had over indulged and could not manage one more mouthful!

There was much reminiscing and laughter as well as a few tears of sadness.

At the end of the afternoon, all agreed that this was not goodbye, just au revoir.

Cllr A Partridge

2ND PEMBURY RAINBOWS

25

Spring has finally sprung and thank goodness for it. We say hello to lighter evenings, better weather and all things fresh – a perfect fusion for Pembury Rainbows.

Our programme this term has also demonstrated an eclectic mix of colour, smell, touch and taste. We have been learning about ‘Our World’ and this has enabled us to explore such subjects as the wonderful Giant Panda and its plight and the Rainforests and their infinite but not sustainable wildlife. We’ve revelled in the festivities of the Chinese New Year and learned to sign our Promise using Makaton. The Rainbows’ horizons have certainly broadened.

During the February Half Term holiday, we had a heart-warming, albeit toe-freezing, day out to Wildwood, where we got to learn all about Arctic Foxes, Otters, Wallabies, Lynx and other fantastic animals. The girls were extraordinary in such unaccommodating temperatures, as were the hot chocolates at lunchtime!

In March, we enjoyed our first visit to Clip’n Climb and it certainly won’t be our last. Watching all the girls sitting and listening to their instructors, fully harnessed up, I couldn’t help but imagine they were all sat upon a plane, ready to take their first parachute jump……. ‘Where Eagles Dare’, so do 2nd Pembury Rainbows. And I haven’t yet ruled out that idea from my future programmes!

However, what we definitely have set in our future events is a joint activity day with 1st Pembury Beavers – ‘A Beaver and Rainbow Intergalactic Mission’, to boldly go where no Beaver or Rainbow has gone before! Our day is space-themed, and we shall be building rockets of all different shapes and sizes and testing their aerial limits. We will also be learning about the stars and creating our own edible constellations. And what would a space day be, without its alien life forms? Probably a little less fun so there will be slime and little green men to ensure our rocket party goes off with a ‘BANG’.

PEMBURY GARDENERS’ SOCIETY

COMMUNITY COFFEE SHOP

The Gardeners’ held their Spring show in the Baptist Church Hall on March 24th.

Society members’ fears that the prolonged cold and wet spring would have an adverse effect on their show unfortunately proved well-founded.

Daffodil enthusiasts were hardest hit with the season estimated to be three weeks late. This led to very few entries in the section whilst other spring flowers – the tulips and muscari hyacinths were also missing.

Brian Fryer found a nice vase of narcissi ‘Demmo’ to win best exhibit in the section as well as winning the best bloom award with the same variety. Veronica Knight took the award for a nicely staged bowl of mixed daffodils whilst Shirley Winters produced six beautiful helleborus blooms set on a board.

Floral art exhibits were again spectacular with Brenda Penfold winning the Doris Down cup and a rosette and certificate for ‘Best in Show’ award.

Christina Fryer headed the cookery section with most points whilst Margaret Pettitt took the Michael Pavely memorial cup for her neat handicraft entry.

The Society thanks the Baptist Church for making their premises available for the show at short notice and members now look forward to the Summer show at the Village Hall on 23rd June. It is hoped the weather will have warmed up by then and that the sweet peas and roses will be up to their usual standards.

Other awards were as follows:Hextable Cup – Brian FryerKent Federation Certificate – Shirley WintersDaffodil Society Medal – Brian FryerCookery – Kent Federation Certificate -Brenda Penfold

PEMBURY FILM SHOWS AND DANGEROUS DRIVING

When we were in our youth, every now and then on a Saturday there used to be a film show in the Village Institute, which is now the library. The film show used to be run by Mr Keep who used to own the Mill House along Redwings Lane. I can remember seeing what to us was a great adventure film starring Errol Flynn as a pirate. Mr Keep knew I kept rabbits and he told me one day that he had a chicken shed he wanted to get rid of and thought I could make use of it. I went to the Mill House and with a bit of adaptation it was just what I wanted but the problem was how to get it home, up the Mill Hill and Rowley Hill.

However, nearly opposite the Institute, there was a house which used to be occupied by Mr Sid Woods and his family. They used to run a garden nursery with greenhouses and it was from here that all the kids used to buy their daffodils for Mothers’ Day. He had a marvellous four-wheeled trolley with a front axle that could be steered by a long metal handle that you could even steer by standing on the back of the trolley. Mr Woods kindly let me borrow the trolley and with the help of my good friend Michael Waterman, off we went. It was difficult enough getting it down Rowley Hill but off we went along Redwings Lane. When we got to the

end of the lane we were faced with the short steep hill down to the Mill House. Mick lifted up the handle and said come on, get on and whilst he held the trolley back with one foot on the ground, on I got, one of the worst things I ever did.

Off we went at an incredible speed and thankfully the metal gates to the Mill House were open. How we got through them I shall never know but right in the middle of the drive was a beautiful round, raised flower bed surrounded by flat sandstone. We hit this head on, both of us being propelled forwards through the flowers and on to the drive the other side. What we did not realise that Mr Keep and his family and friends were sitting on the adjacent lawn having a tea party. Everything went very quiet, and thankfully Mick and I only picked up minor injuries. Obviously, Mr Keep then dashed to see what was going on and the only thing we could say was that we had come to collect the chicken house, well what else could we say?!

Hugh Boorman.

U3A

I have been trying to find a suitable word or phrase to define what our U3A is. Out of the many possible, one struck me as the most appropriate namely “community” in the sense of “a group of people having a particular characteristic in common”. What is it that characterises our U3A? I think it is that all our members are volunteers who are helpful, welcoming and enthusiastic both to impart their knowledge and experience, and to learn new things. This happens at our monthly meetings, at the many interest groups and in the course of the trips, holidays and other events we organise. For example, we have just had a day out in Cambridge and, through a guided tour, learned all about the history of the University, how one of its colleges (Pembroke) functions and the wonders of Kings College’s Chapel.

We have members drawn from a wide area around Pembury as well as from the village itself and there is no religious or political affiliation, or minimum or maximum age required to be able to join – anyone is eligible. So our U3A is not a closeted collective. Indeed we are outgoing and wish to participate fully in the wider community in the sense of the society of the entire village and its surrounding

locality. For that reason our flower arranging group members are taking part in the Pembury Flower Festival later this year, our U3A team (titled Up The Aged!) are defending their title as champions in the Village Quiz on 15th June and we will have a stand at the Pembury Fun Day on 9th June when we will show what we do and have members on hand to answer any questions. If you want to find out more about our U3A please look in at our stand or if you cannot make it that day please go to our website www.pemburyu3a.org where you will find a lot of information and contact addresses.

PADDOCK WOOD ADVICE CENTRE

HomelessnessShelter report that the three main reasons for having lost a last settled home, given by applicants for homelessness support from local councils are:

1. parents, friends or relatives unwilling or unable to continue to accommodate them

2. relationship breakdown, including domestic violence

3. loss of an assured shorthold tenancy

The Homelessness Reduction Act 2017The Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 came into force on 3 April 2018. The Act places duties on local housing authorities to intervene at earlier stages to prevent homelessness in their areas. It also requires housing authorities to provide homelessness services to all those affected, not just those who have ‘priority need’. These include:

• an enhanced prevention duty requiring housing authorities to work with people to prevent homelessness at an earlier stage; and

• a new duty for those who are already homeless requiring housing authorities to support households for 56 days to relieve their homelessness by helping them to secure accommodation.

If the local housing authority is satisfied that an applicant is homeless or threatened with homelessness, and eligible for assistance, the authority must now make an assessment of the applicant’s case and agree a personalised plan, regardless of their priority need.

What can we help with?Our experienced advisers are available to provide face to face, confidential and impartial advice in relation to homelessness and housing matters, including;

• What to do if you get a section 8 notice

• What to do if you get a section 21 notice

• Threatened or actual eviction

• Checking if you can apply for homeless help

• Applying for help if you’re homeless

• Challenging the council’s homeless decision

• Suitability of accommodation

For more information or help about homelessness, housing or general advice please contact the Paddock Wood Community Advice Centre at 64 Commercial Road, Paddock Wood, TN12 6DP Email: [email protected] Tel: 01892 838619

CRIME REPORT

Well, where has the time gone? The news on the crime front came as a bit of a shock as I expected a substantial reduction in the total figures against what was given for the previous quarter. Unfortunately, we have only a marginal reduction of three, down from 99 to 96. Whatever happens we must not let these figures lock ourselves away. We have to accept them and fight back - show that we are not going to join in the national rise in crime.

Pembury is our priority and violent crime again is rearing its ugly head - up from 38 to 43, 10 of which were domestic related. There were 3 assaults on Police, 2 robberies, 4 sexual offences, 4 public order offences, 2 malicious communications and so on.

Those listed as other offences have come down from 10 to 4; theft offences excluding motor vehicles have come down from 23 to 16 and burglary from residential has risen from 8 to 10. I am always stating that a lot of crimes that are committed could be prevented by all of us being a little more careful and perhaps more observant of what is going on around us. Perhaps we also need a little more Police presence to tell the would-be offender that Pembury is not the place to operate in.

Be careful out there, Hugh Boorman

LOCAL RESIDENTS, WE NEED YOU!

Volunteering can be wonderful and fulfilling, and it can provide help and support to those who need it the most.

At Macmillan Crossroads Care Kent & Medway Volunteer Service, we support people affected by cancer and their carers. Our team provide quality information and guidance, along with a helpful assessment process to understand what support is needed. Currently our volunteers provide:• companionship• emotional support• light housework or gardening • social outings• shopping• escorting to medical appointments

One of our valued volunteers Isabel has expressed the following; “I became aware of the Macmillan Crossroads volunteer opportunity whilst volunteering for Pilgrims Hospice and they asked me to come in for an interview. The rest is history (well over 3 years of it) I visit people in their homes, do bits of light gardening, light housework, shopping trips, health appointment visits and cups of tea and chats. I even get to work once again with students as I am lucky enough to be part of training and supporting 6th form

students in this type of care work. The rewards are immense, and I have learnt so much from these people about lives led, challenges faced and to still be faced - all is put into perspective. Life is for living and sharing even when time maybe in short supply. Give it a go. Every visit is different and being part of a team is very enjoyable.”

Can you spare some time each week? Do you have a good listening ear, the first and most important part of helping? Do you have a special interest or skill that someone could benefit from?

Volunteering is a very positive addition to your CV as it can demonstrate your commitment to a work ethic and your caring nature. There is also in-house training available for all volunteers and volunteering expenses can be reimbursed in line with our volunteering policy.

Local volunteers are required to help local people. At the moment, volunteers travel from all over the west Kent area to help local residents.

If you feel you’d like to make a difference when someone needs a helping hand, contact Jen or Charley on 01622 817114, or email: [email protected] or find us on Facebook Macmillan Crossroads Volunteer Service.

Richard Snow is responsible for updating the Village Diary, which can be viewed at www.pembury.org.

The diary serves two purposes. Firstly, to enable event organisers to check the diary before arranging an event to avoid clashes. Secondly to enable everyone to know what is happening in the village. It is important that information is sent to Richard at [email protected] with date, times,

title of event, venue and contact details.

Please note that to view the calendar you must be using a recent version of Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer (IE11 or later). Computers running Windows XP will only be able to

view the calendar using Firefox or Google Chrome.

Organisations – please contact me with your dates for inclusion in the next edition of the magazine:[email protected]
