Many thanks to Eddie Shurbutt for using this space last month to give us a timely and valuable update on Holiday Safety during myabsence. Eddie, as most of you know, is the Safety Coordinator for our cadets and also contributes to the seniors on occasion. ThanksEddie! If you are like me and get the FAAs email safety alerts, you have probably noticed that a lot of emphasis is being put on pr eventingrunway incursions and taxiway incidents. The main causes of these events are distractions in the cockpit. What can cause aircrews to

become distracted? Unfortunately, some of the aids to our flying, such as smart phones, tablets, and laptop computers can be the verysource of many distractions. For example, some non-flying activities that illustrate the potential are:

    - Children using cellphones while crossing a street were found to be 43% more likely to be hit by a vehicle thanchildren not using them.

    - Pedestrian injuries in the 16 to 19 year old demographic have increased 25% in the last few years and are beinga ributed to increased cell phone use.

    - Sta s cs show that tex ng and driving is nearly four mes more dangerous than driving under the in uence ofalcohol or drugs.

The record books are full of examples of flying or taxiing activities that reinforce the dangers that these devices bring to aviation aswell:

    - One of my previous ar cles detailed how a cell phone ringing on an airliner takeo almost led to an aborted

takeo because it was erroneously assumed to be an alarm on the panel.

    - The aircrew members that over ew their des na on by 150 miles (while ignoring ATCs fran c calls) wereworking on their upcoming schedules on their laptops.

    - An Airbus captain le his cellphone on in ight and as he was making an approach to his des na on the textmessages that he received as he got within range of ground based towers distracted him so much that he nallyaborted the landing at 392 feet AGL because they had not lowered the landing gear.

    - A Boeing 737 crew missed a taxiway turn a er a long day of ying as the copilot was nishing inpu ng weightand balance info into the FMS.

As the last example above illustrates, you dont need a mobile device to divert your attention, the G1000 will work just fine . Routineconversation can be just as distracting as electronic devices; one of the reasons we should abide by sterile cockpit rules duringtaxiing and critical phases of flight. We all know the Wings position on cellphone use; they should be turned off while in the air. My recommendation is that, if y ou usethem on the ground after starting the engine, use the following procedures:

    - Try to complete all your communica on before star ng to taxi (just as you try to complete as much of thepre ight checklist as possible).

    - When it is not possible to complete your use of the phone on the ramp, such as when you obtain an IFRclearance over the phone (ATC requires you to be ready for immediate takeo , generally) then stop at a cleararea and complete the transac on while parked.

    - Turn all phones of prior to pulling into posi on for takeo .

Our mobile electronic devices bring a lot of information to us that, only a few years ago, was unavailable on all but the mostsophisticated of aircraft. Nexrad weather, excellent situational awareness, airport information, and restricted areas and MOA s are justa few of the advantages. Just dont forget that the primary reason we are in the cockpit at all is to fl y the aircraft fi rst!STAY SAFE!Ronald Harlan, Unit 118 Safety Officer

Share the Joy One of our responsibilities as Pilots is to share the joy we have of aviation with

others in a safe manner. In the CAP one of the opportunities we have to do that isby giving Cadet Orientation Rides (O - Rides). These are aircraft flights that last

about one hour following a syllabus that has been approved. Each Cadet isallowed five funded Powered Flights, and five funded Glider Flights. If you have

not had the pleasure of giving the First Flight to a Cadet you are truly missing agreat experience.Major Jim Gosnell

As we move toward the end of 2012 I am already getting inquiries about the Alabama Wing Annual Conference . I cantell you two very important pieces of information. First the conference will be held in Mobile Alabama . We are veryexcited about this opportunity to have our conference down on the coast in Mobile. Also our venue is the Battle HouseRenaissance Hotel and Spa. Contain the gasp and clapping!! The rates are fantastic (thanks to Meddie Clark) and thevenue probably one of the best, if not the best, hotel and convention location in the area. This is really going to be anice setting for our conference. The second piece of information that is critical for each of you is that the dates of theconference are March 15-17 2013 . Be sure to mark the dates!

The next item is that the conference hotel registration is actually open . For real. It really is available. I have attachedthe information below for those who want to go ahead and make a room reservation. We will be bringing up the ALWGConference registration online in early January, 2013.

Everyone is excited about our venue. We are planning a superb event with lots of training to be made available. Plannow to attend. Plan to stay the entire weekend. We will have special activities for you but plan some extra time to visitthe city and all the wonderful activities to do from shopping, to the museums, to the USS Alabama, to the beach. There is something for everyone.

ALWG Emergency Services Mission AircrewSchool Greetings All,

Some additional slots have opened up in the ALWG Emergency Services School'sMission Aircrew School. To ensure that we are optimizing training opportunities forthe members of this wing, we have reopened the application window until January6th so we can fill these open slots. Those interested in participating should applyby clicking on the "Aircrew School Application" link at http://wess.alwg.us .

Applicants will need to already be fully current and qualified Mission Scanners.

Mission Pilot and Mission Observer Trainees are highly encouraged to apply, butwe are also taking those members who are already qualified as Mission Pilot/Observer that are interested in enhancing their aircrew knowledge and skills(certainly something to keep in mind for the upcoming ALWG SAR Competition!)Cadets are welcome to participate as well so long as they are already Scannerqualified.

The third of five training weekends of the FY13 WESS training cycle will be heldJan 18 -20 and will begin the Mission Pilot / Mission Observer track of MAS. TheMission Scanner track has already concluded and was a huge success. Bycombining classroom presentations, tabletop & practical enrichment exercises, aswell as operational training sorties in a very structured, task based trainingenvironment, members receive an exceptionally high quality training experience. The course fee is $25 which helps offset the cost of training materials. Travel to/from the activity in corporate vehicles is reimbursable and lodging is provided onsite free of charge. Meals are a combination of bring -your -own and eating at localdining establishments. Each weekend, the activity begins at 7pm on Fridayevening (sign -in opens at 6:30) and concludes around noon on Sunday. Due tointensity and breadth of the training, it is necessary that participants attend everyweekend for the entire weekend and remain on site both Friday and Saturdaynights. Members from seven different squadrons participated in the MissionScanner track of MAS. Please seek them out to get a first hand account of whatWESS -MAS is like. Additional documents with "what to expect" and a packing listare available for download at wess.alwg.us .

Again, the application window will be open until January 6th. Should we havemore members apply than we have slots available, an announcement will bemade on January 8th of who will be attending. If you have any questionsregarding the Aircrew School component of WESS, please let me know. If youhave questions regarding WESS in general, please direct them to the activitydirector, LtCol Michael Long at [email protected] .

Once again the holiday season has come and gone and it is

ime to get back to our normal routines. I dont know aboutother people but I sometimes lose track of what day it is when Iam off work for the holidays. I can tell you this though, Januarywill be off and running shortly. The cadets will have their firstmeeting on Jan 3 and will meet at the Avondale park for PT.Maybe all the Senior Members should join them there and run/walk their mile, then transition to the Community Center for situps, push ups and sit and reach. After all the yummy stuff we

ate, I dont think it would hurt any of us to do that.Thank you to all the cadets and senior members that participated in the Missing Per-son search in the Auburn area on Dec 26 th. I know it was tough to leave the comfort ofyour home, with family and friends visiting to be a part of this. We left the airport at5:15am headed to Auburn and didnt get home until 8:30pm. It was cold, wet and thewind was blowing gales and we appreciate your willingness to serve.

On January 11 th, the Cadet Conference at Maxwell AFB will start and run through Jan13. Also on Jan 11 th, our Cyber-patriot Team will compete in the Semifinals of their com-petition. Good luck to our team and hope for you to make it to the finals in D.C.

January 18 th brings us the WESS training and we have some folks that need to dosome preparation before they leave. Check your gear, food, shelter and make sure tobring layers and a jacket because January is typically a very cold month. Hot Hands andToasty Toes are a welcome addition to your gear during this month as well. There will behot water available for instant oatmeal, grits, hot chocolate, etc. Before we know it, Janu-ary will be over.

Congratulations to Cadet John Daniel Smith to the rank of C/SMSgt. Also the ca-dets who participated in the Christmas Parade in Pell City did an amazing job and we are

so proud of each and every one of them. Continue on the good work in studying yourmodules and we are looking forward to another Great Year in Pell City CompositeSquadron!Maj. Cindy Bennett

OK Senior Members, the requirement is HERE! Earning your YeagerAward will be part of the requirements to advance from Captain to Majorstarting in March 2013. I had heard rumors that this was coming andnow its true. If you need help such as a hard copy of the book, Journeyof Flight, I will gladly see that you get one. If you would rather downloada copy or study it on the computer, I can give you directions to do thatas well. My contact information is [email protected] , justdrop me an email and I will get back to you. My cell number is 256 -225

In current events, NASA is promising that 2013 will be a year ofscience on the space station, doing more projects, studying the longterm effects of weightlessness on bone density and studying animals foreffects of drugs used in osteoporosis among other experiments.

In other space news scientists have identified the first meteorite tooriginate from Mars and claim that it holds 10 times more water thanany other space rock from Mars. So the search continues for evidencethat Mars once contained water sources.

There is a lot of information from different media sources aboutspace related news. It isnt hard to stay up -to-date on what ishappening in Aerospace and it is always interesting.

I hope that you keep learning something new every day andeveryone have a great month.

    From the Cadet Commander:

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years! With the holidays over, itis time to turn our attention back to CAP.

This week's focus will be on Leadership and Drill. I'll try get an email out aboutthat tonight. Our schedule for the month should follow the normal outline (PT,Leadership, CD, AE). There will be a planning session Thursday evening to mapout the quarterly schedule. All cadet staff members are requested to attend ifpossible. Fun Night will be the end this month!!

In a few months I will be stepping down form CC and staff positions will be avail-able. Cadets, please start thinking about what leadership position you would liketo fill, your qualifications and goals, both personal and for the squadron, that youwould like to see fulfilled while serving. We are always watching your attitude, growth and performance. More information will be available closer to time.

The NCSA deadline is coming up Jan 15th. If you would like to go to one (ormore), be sure to apply! Remember, you must have completed an encampment

to attend (with the exception of NESA). I do not know if NESA registration is upor not yet, but to apply you need to go through the NESA website NOT the NCSApage.

Pell City will be competing for a slot at finals for Cyber Patriot this Friday after-noon. Thoughts and prayers would be appreciated as we compete from 11am -5pm. As far as I know, we tied for 9th place in the CAP category out of 261 CAPteams that originally registered and the top 6 teams qualify. PC has a goodchance of making it!
