TRANSCRIPT
It’s a tough year all over Oregon for snow conditions. It seems as though when the eastern part of ourcounty has a lot of snow, we don’t¸ and the east has certainly been getting more than they want. If the past isany indicator we should have a bumper year next season. We need a good snow pack for a myriad of reasons.
Congratulations to the Central Oregon Snowbusters for a successful drag race event February 8th & 9th atWanoga Sno-park. Snow was iffy right up until the last minute, then it snowed, the track was groomed andeveryone had a good time. You can almost always count on Central Oregon snow. The drags are very popularand the Snowbusters appreciate the support of snowmobilers, many who travel a long distance to participate.
It’s not too late in the season for your club to plan an event for the charity of your choice or for the benefitof the Candlelighters. Please be sure to send the information on your event to me [email protected]. Please include the activity, volunteer hours and if your event was a Fundraiserinclude the dollar amount donated.
Our membership drive continues for the duration of our membership year. You still have time to plan A “takea friend snowmobiling” event for your club. You will acquaint someone with the sport of Snowmobiling andyou may pick up new members. Go to www.snowmobile.org/takeafriendsnowmobilingcampaign
Thank you to all club presidents, secretaries and all other club officers and members who have workedtogether to promote snowmobiling and have fun in the process. Thank you to the trail clearing crews who areout there in the spring, summer and fall doing trail maintenance work, stocking wood in the snow shelters, having summer work parties and BBQ’s. Thank you to the grooming chairs and their crews who have reallyhad a challenging year providing groomed trails for everyone. Many of you are using the grooming down timeto do the many other chores it’s hard to find the time for during the regular grooming season. Thank you aswell to the OSSA District Directors and the OSSA Directors at Large for guiding and overseeing it all. Kudosto one and all.
The North Santiam Snowmobile Club would like to express ourdeepest condolences to the Eilers family. One of our long timemembers Joy Eilers lost a six year battle to cancer on November 30,2013. Her smile is missed by all in our community, but mostly byher husband Doug Eilers & their four children & grandchildren.
Joy was an aggressive rider & loved the sport of snowmobiling. She would seek out the Hill teenage boys & keep up with them onhill climbs and races in open meadows. She supported the clubthrough her husband while he held the office of president formultiple years.
We are happy to say Doug continues to attend meetings & funevents for our club. He is a great wealth of knowledge & support &friend to our current president Kevin Hills.

The calendar shows that it is March but I think theweather man is confused! One day it is snowing andthe next it is 50+ degrees. With this crazy up and downsnow year comes some dangerous conditions. Therehave been several avalanches across the west includingone in the Baker area. A big "Thanks" to the PanhandleSnowmobile Club, their groomers and members whohelped the people injured in that avalanche.
Everyone needs to be aware of low snow areahazards. (rocks, down trees and stumps) Groomers areworking hard to keep areas open for riding. Be sure to"Thank" them when to see them on them trail.
We need to encourage people that have not renewedtheir membership this year to do so. The membershipcontest is in effect until the end of June. Remember ournumbers count will all of our land issues.
The drag races that were held at Wanoga snow parkby Central Oregon Snowbusters Snowmobile Club inFebruary proved to be quite interesting. On Wednesdayand Thursday before the races they were hauling insnow from all around to make the track and late Fridayand Saturday they were moving snow off the track, almost a blizzard. A great time was had by all whoattended.
The Candlelighters Play Day held at Crescent Lakewas another success, snow was low but 50 degreeweather made for lots of fun for the kids. If your clubdoes not have a charity that they support this is a greatone. Remember what ever your charity, pleases sendPeggy your volunteer forms. There are many otherevents scheduled around the state, so please check withyour clubs and get involved.
The LaPine Lodgepole Dodgers will be hosting theconvention in January of 2015. Mark your calendarand get ready for a great time.I
I think maybe it is time to remind everyone thatanyone that is involved in the clubs offices, grooming, trail clearing and all state offices are all volunteers andare very dedicated to OSSA and the sport ofsnowmobiling. That is why we have survived for 40+years! GET INVOLVED!!! Check with the websiteand respond to the issues that are affecting our sport.

Skyline Snowmobile Club
Skyline Snowmobile Club has not had a great winter on thesnow, but we do enjoy our dinner meetings! Last month we hada really wonderful door prize, a plant stand made by theprisoners at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institute in Pendleton.Another of their pieces was a door prize at convention this year. They do really nice work.
Some members had a good ride to Elk Flats on February 8,enjoyed good powder snow for a change as we have not hadgood snow to ride on this winter.
Our next ride is upcoming on February 22 to BlackMountain.
Right now we are getting some new snow, but last week wehad rain and lost some of our snow. We still have about 3 feetof snow at Tollgate and about 5 feet in the high country, which ishalf of normal.
We have 2 more rides coming up in March, and hope forsome good snow conditions for least last rides of the season.
A few of our members went to the convention and had agood time in spite of the lack of snow resulting in thecancellation of rides there.
Our next dinner meeting will be March 6 at the LongbranchCafé in Weston.

We can finally thank the Snow Gods for sending us overtwo feet of snow so we could groom a few miles of trails. However, the snow didn’t last too long. We were able to get inour February 11th meeting on the trail after a ride on the freshlygroomed trails. Rain was falling but that didn’t stop us fromriding. First time out for myself this year. Now once againwe’re waiting for more snow to fall in the lower elevations.
Only a short time left until we have our final meeting of theyear in April. We will need feet of snow in the next few weeks.
We added a couple new members which was reallyappreciated.
That’s about it from the Hood River Folks. We will beholding our March 11th meeting at The Charburger, 7 p.m.
Everyone ride safe and happy trails. Jerry Thomas, Gorge Goodtimers President

If you read last months report, you may remember us asking allof our fellow snowmobile-ers to “Pray for snow.” What we shouldhave clarified in our request was, “Pray for snow, but not ALL atonce.” In certain spots, we actually received almost three feet snowin less than two days. Needless to say, most of us actually got outand enjoyed our favorite winter sport.
The La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers were busy over the past month. Our annual poker ride was fun and well attended. Volunteers fromthe Dodgers and the Walker Rim Riders helped at the Mid-Willamette Candlelighters event at Crescent Lake, (see photos) andassisted the CO Snow Busters with the drag races at Wanoga SnowPark.
If you are not familiar with the Candlelighters, it’s a special non-profit organization that provides support to over a thousand familiesaffected by childhood cancer. The weather was beautiful and warm.Later in the day, jackets and gloves were coming off and the kidswere down to t-shirts. It didn’t matter to them at all that the snowwas not ideal… they still got their snowmobile rides, and later theywere treated to smores!!! Everyone who attended had a fantastictime!
A special note, the La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers are very proud tobe selected as the host club for the OSSA Snowmobile Conventionfor 2015. We look forward to this event, and getting to meet fellowsnowmobile enthusiast from around the state.

I just pulled up the extended forecast and it’s looking good for another series ofstorms landing in our mountains. Many club members have finally hit mileage in thehundred and are planning to put more on the remainer of the winter. Even with the lackof snow, the club has been growing and member enthusiasm has been high, resulting inanother successful family play day at Walton Lake Sno-Park, wrapping up the month ofJanuary.
Early February club members were able to just focus on riding as no events werescheduled. A club meeting at Meadow Lakes will end the month of February.Furthermore, a planned night ride and progressive dinner will be kicked off March 1st atWalton Lake Sno-Park, 6:00 p.m. Come on down, you won’t want to miss this event.
Rules of the Road — Road closures in the Lookout Mountain area remain in effectdue to a current Timer Sale in the area; just another reminder to stay off the plowed roadswith your snowmobile.

What a great and wonderful day! On Sunday, January 26th, withnear perfect weather, yet not so perfect snow, the annual Candlelightersfor Children with Cancer event came off with out a hitch at the CrescentLake Junction Snowmobile Park. Approximately fifty Candlelighterfamily members had a great day playing in the snow, taking sleigh rides, snowmobile rides, and sliding down the sledding hill. Unfortunately, thedog sleds could not participate this year due to the warm temperatureand low snow conditions. Everyone also feasted on a great lunch at theCrescent Lake Community Center. We served about 90 meals forfamily, support staff, volunteers, club members, and others. One greataddition this year and a big hit with the kids was the campfire and themaking of smores. Photos can be viewed on our facebook page.
It will be impossible to properly account for and thank all oursponsors and volunteers that made this such a wonderful and successfulevent. My apologies to all those that deserve praise and attention yet arenot properly thanked in this article. First, our thanks to the manyvolunteers from the Mt. Jefferson Snowmobile Club, the Lodge PoleDodgers, the Central Oregon Snowbusters, the Mt. Hood SnowmobileClub, the host Walker Rim Riders and event coordinators Steve andDoris Winegar. Thanks go to OSSA and staff, including President VeraRiser, Executive Director Peggy Spieger, Director John Spieger, andDistrict 4 Director Rick Bice.
This event could not have been accomplished with out the help ofthe Deschutes National Forrest and District Ranger Holly Jewkes whoapproved the permits and assigned her staff to assist. Thanks to MeriaPage, Special Events Coordinator for completing and processing thepermit, and to Snow Rangers Sam Cook and Dan Trapanise who wereon site and provided Forest Service items, talked to the kids and families, and patrolled the area assuring safety and providing any neededassistance.
Also, our thanks to food sponsors including Ray’s Food Place inOakridge, Cosmos Creations, NorPac Foods, and Gamberetti’sRestaurant in Salem. The food was prepared and served at the CrescentLake Community Center. Thank you to Dick Carlson, ExecutiveDirector of Central Cascades Fire and EMS for the use of their facilitywhere lunch was served, and to Sally Carlson who was the on siteNurse/EMT and 1st Medical Responder. Thanks to the Mogstad familyDuane & Joni Mogstad with Bonnie, Kirsten, Wendy Mogstad andMike Curtis for manning the warming hut. Dean Mogstad assisted withgiving rides. Thanks also to Ben Sunderland for his help in identifyingand setting up trails and coordination with the Forrest Service, and toMark Bolton who groomed the trails and built the sled hill.
Thanks also to Mark Sperling of Peak Performance in LaPine whobrought equipment and family to volunteer, and James Wilson andAaron Tervinia from the Boys Scouts of American at Camp Makuallaon Crescent Lake who provided communications and worked very hardon shaping the sled hill.
So you can see people came from all over the state and from manyareas of interest to make this activity the thrill that it is. Thanks again toevery one and we will see you again for next year’s Candlelighters eventin the snow.
The Walker Rim Riders are headquartered out of Crescent Lake. Please check our web site for more club activities these coming months. We have hundreds of miles of trails and a great grooming program. Here is an all-
new product that
falls under the
“fuel additive”
category from
Yamaha Motor
Corporation. It is
not a re-packaged
product that was
already on the
market – instead,
Yamaha engi-
neered and built
this product so it
is a proprietary
synthetic formula.
Normally when
we think of ethanol in our fuel we think of how
ethanol absorbs water and falls to the bottom of the
tank, but there are far more issues with the ever-in-
creasing amounts of ethanol in our fuel supply.
Yamaha technicians and engineers have to deal with
this on a daily basis and wanted to do something
about it. The Engine Med RX is different from a fuel
stabilizer; rather, it is an engine cleaner and cor-
rosion protection formula with outstanding de-car-
boning properties. Yep, gets rid of the carbon, so
this is an excellent treatment to keep your power
valves clean on two-strokes. On four-strokes this
will clean up the carbon deposits on the pistons,
cylinder heads and valves, just like it does on two-
strokes. If you are familiar with the “Ring Free”
product used by Yamaha dealers to de-carbon en-
gines, Engine Med RX uses the same stuff but with
far more corrosion inhibitors to combat the ethanol
residue.
Ethanol residue? Have you ever noticed a white
film on the inside of your gas cap when you take it
off to add fuel? We always thought this was some
sort of residue from the ethanol, and we were right
– it is a contaminant from the manufacturing of
ethanol and it is VERY corrosive. They’re called sul-
fate salts, specifically sulphuric acid, and it is very
aggressive at corroding the metals found in fuel
systems. With all of the electronic fuel injection
systems in use these days, fuel pumps are now in-
side the gas tanks so they are constantly exposed
to the ethanol and the corrosive effects of the by-
products. The corrosion inhibitors found in Engine
Med RX are specifically aimed at protecting steel,
aluminum, yellow metals and silver solder all the
way to E-20 blends.
We’ve examined test data provided by Yamaha
engineers on the benefits of Engine Med RX and it
scared the crap out of us to see what ethanol fuels
are doing (corrosion) to the metals in the fuel sys-
tem. We are already familiar with the benefits of
using Yamaha’s Ring Free, so when we learned
the new Engine Med RX was basically a consumer
version of Ring Free with corrosion protection, we
wanted a case of it right then and there. It comes
in smaller 3.2 ounce bottles that can be used with
5 gallons of fuel, or in larger 16 ounce bottles. It
should be used CONTINUOUSLY with every fill for
the best results and highest level of protection. It
is safe to use with Yamaha’s new Fuel Med RX
product (fuel stabilizer). Ask for Engine Med RX at
any Yamaha dealer, it just became available in
June. After seeing the test data and being edu-
cated by the Yamaha engineers we will now be
using it in ALL of our engines from this point for-
ward.

Did You Know...The longest snowmobile journey as recognized by the Guinness Book of
World Records was set by retired U.S. Marine Bob Davis, who logged
12,163 miles on his 2005 Yamaha RS Venture in a 60-day period between
January 11, 2008 and March 11, 2008. His sled already had nearly 24,000
miles on it when the quest began. Davis averaged 18 mpg over the life of
the sled. The valves were inspected at 22,000 miles and only three re-
quired adjustment. The original brake pads were changed at 22,12i7
miles and the original track was replaced at 15,593 miles. Drive belts av-
eraged 9,000 miles each, and the original factory engine lasted the entire
36,033 miles.
Over 85,000 full-time jobs are generated by the snowmobile industry in
North America. Those jobs are involved in manufacturing, dealerships
and tourism related businesses.

Since the new Ski-Doo models now store their spare drive belt
in the clutch cover, this has opened up some valuable real estate
on top of the CVT cover. Hmm, what could we put there that
would benefit from the warm location next to the engine and on
top of the clutches? How about a small storage bag to carry an
extra pair of goggles?
That is exactly what you can now get from Ski-Doo, a new
goggle bag that mounts on top of the CVT cover. Ski-Doo calls it
an “Oil Support Caddy/Goggle Bag” and tells us it is suitable for
an extra quart of oil or a spare set of goggles. Of course, this will
only work on those models fitted with the CVT cooling system,
which is pretty much all of the E-TEC sleds, but this fancy clutch
cover can be added to most any of the XP/XS sleds (#860 200
883).

2013 Polaris Pro-RMK models feature an all-new belt-drive
system that replaces the traditional chain and gears in the chain-
case. Officially called the QuickDrive Low Inertia Drive system, it
is the first belt drive system in an OEM production snowmobile.
The complete system – lightweight brake, extruded drive shaft
and maintenance-free belt drive reduces sled weight by more
than 6.5 pounds. Polaris claims this provides a 21% reduction in
rotational inertia for enhanced efficiency and acceleration. Getting
rid of this much rotating mass cannot be overstated – even if the
mass is not that far from the center of rotation, it will allow the
sled to spool up quicker, which will provide even better response
and acceleration, maximizing the available power and getting it
to the snow even more effectively. According to Polaris, this
amounts to the rider being able to apply five pounds less of force
to get the sled to do what they want it to. The belt drive pulleys
are nickel-plated for wear and corrosion resistance.
