Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis:Acquired Demyelinating Disorders in Children and Adolescents…Symptoms, Evaluation, Treatment and Prognosis

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course is intended for primary care providers and specialists who see children and adolescents when they develop acute neurologic dysfunction. These events may be due to acquired demyelinating lesions of the Central Nervous System (CNS). This course will make attendees familiar with clinical findings which should suggest the possibility of acquired CNS demyelination. Typical imaging findings, laboratory diagnostic studies and protocols to differentiate from other neurologic syndromes will be discussed. Treatment of acute episodes and long term disease modifying therapies will be considered. Cognitive impact and social implications for children with acquired CNS demyelinating disorders and their families will be reviewed. Current and future research trends will be presented.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:• IdentifypresentingclinicalsymptomsofacquiredCNSdemyelinating

disorders in children and adolescents, including acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, clinically isolated syndromes, pediatric multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica.

• DifferentiateacquiredCNSdemyelinatingdisordersinchildrenandadolescents from other disorders which can mimic the same presentation

• Discussappropriateoptionsfortreatmentofacuteclinicaldemyelinatingevents as well as options for disease modifying therapies in children and adolescents

• Identifyneuroimagingchangesthatcharacterizeacquireddemyelinatingdisorders in children and adolescents

• Explaincognitiveandsocialramificationsofacquireddemyelinatingdisorders in children and adolescents as these affect the family unit

• Assess potential for ongoing research to guide development of future therapies
