What do plantsneed to grow?Plants need water, air, and sunlight

to grow.

They need nutrients from the soil.

Nutrients help plants grow.

Plant Parts

A plant has four main parts.

It has roots, a stem, leaves, and fl owers.

A plant’s roots grow down into the soil.They hold the plant in place.

Stems and leaves seeklight as they grow.

Roots take in water from the soil.

Roots also take in nutrients from the soil.

Roots carry water and nutrients to the stem.

The stem holds up the plant.It carries water and nutrients to the

leaves.

Roots grow down.Stems, leaves, andflowers grow up.

They make food using air, water, and

energy from light.

Flowers make seeds.Seeds can grow into new plants.

How can theenvironment

change the wayplants grow?A change to the environment can

change how a plant grows.

Plants need the right amount of sunlightand water to grow and stay healthy.

Plants also need the right temperatures.

 Without enough water,plants can die.

Other Changes in Plants

Wind can change how plants grow.

Vines grow along the ground.

They change how they grow when theytouch another plant.

Plants get nutrients from the soil.

Some soil lacks enough nutrients.

This can cause plants to grow poorly.

help plants grow?A fl ower’s outside part is the petal.

The petal’s powder is pollen.

Pollen helps seeds grow inside fl owers.

Fruit grows around the seeds.It protects the seeds.

Seeds make new plants.

Inside each seed is a tiny plant.

The Life Cycle of a Peach Tree

A peach seed is planted.

If it gets enough water and air, it can

germinate, or begin to grow.The seed’s roots and stem grow.

Peach seeds comefrom a fruit.

 A seed germinatesinto a seedling.
