I wasn’t expecting that! Starting a new job can be daunting, but when arriving at Eden Animal Rescue as the new

Development Manager in September I couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome . Each day I count my blessing for being able to work with such dedicated individuals and for

such a worthy cause. Highlights for me have included the Open Day in my first week, meeting the team at the

Charity Shop and lending a hand, our AGM and the amazing generosity of the people that I met on the Max and Paddy walk in Keswick which was in support of EAR.

I always knew that this was a well known and well supported charity having lived nearby for so long however to see it with my own eyes has been tremendous!

You have created a most caring and welcoming sanctuary for both people who visit and the animals in our care. Each week there have been tears of happiness as animals have found their loving forever homes. For me there has been one extra special treat of the four-legged kind! I had the privilege of fostering 2

beautiful collie pups who were brought to us. I have bottle fed them through each night and Charlotte here at EAR looked after them during the day. Now that my other half has got over the shock(!!!) we have

agreed to adopt one of them! Eden will be joining our family very soon but will see his brother every day as Charlotte will be adopting Ollie.

Thank you all for everything that you do to keep our doors and cat flaps open! Lynn Healey, Development Manager

The Gardens Our gardens, under the talented care of Rob Holder, continue to go from strength to strength. There are more shrubs and the beautiful pansies continue to thrive in the colder weather and provide much needed colour at this time of year.

Judy Doldi has donated a second bench for people to sit on and enjoy the peace and quiet of the rescue. The cats who have residency at the front of the cattery facing the green and the car park always have plenty to watch during the day with the comings and goings of people arriving and they can watch the dogs being lead walked. However the cats who are in the quiet pens at the back of the cattery also need this stimulation. This is an area that we need to develop.

Another new addition to the Rescue is the Martin Cattery

The Martin Cattery has recently opened after a generous grant from the Anthony Martin Foundation and is named after the benefactor. The cattery is designed for our cats that like their independence and aren’t too fond of the human race. They are also known as our barn cats. These cats always prove a challenge to rehome and the Martin Cattery allows them the space and freedom to come and go as they wish while waiting to find their forever home. It provides warm, dry, safe accommodation with cosy beds, food and water and is self-contained. It allows EAR staff to monitor their wellbeing in a controlled environment. Libby, for example, became poorly and was transferred to the main cattery to enable staff to provide appropriate care. Once Libby was back on her paws, she returned to the Martin Cattery. It has proved a massive hit with the cats who are spending lots of time in it. Some cats, such as Katie, know exactly when it’s feeding time and will sit outside the cattery waiting impatiently for her breakfast. Her feline friends Fishy, Princess and Fluffy are often close by, watching from a safe distance, ready to charge at the food bowls when those pesky humans have left. From the photo you can see Fishy waiting patiently for her food to be delivered! We would welcome bird tables, bird baths and bird boxes which would enhance the wildlife of the Rescue centre which is another area we are trying to develop.

Membership. Unless you joined Eden Animal Rescue in a different month, most people renew their membership in January. Enclosed in this newsletter is a renewal form. There are now 3 ways of paying. So that we know that it is a membership payment please mark all correspondence and bank forms with ‘EAR membership’. If you do pay by standing order would you mind still returning your form to us with a note so we can ensure our records are correct. Many thanks for your continued support, it is much appreciated.

Shop Volunteers Needed

Eden Animal Rescue’s marvellous shop in Great Dockray, Penrith is always looking for hard working volunteers to help with sorting stock, pricing and front of house selling to our supportive followers. If you are a good communicator and like meeting people please contact Bill or Nina on 01768 890001 for a chat.

From Rescued dog to Rescue dog Remember Dave, one of the six puppies that were rescued from Ireland?

He had found a home with Mick from the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and has been accepted for SARDA (Search & Rescue Dog Association) training. He’s attended his first national weekend in the Peak District where he started in puppy class and he’s

already got ‘sit, wait, recall and return ball to hand’ nailed.

Handler Mick is looking to train him over the course of the next two years so he can step into the shoes of Bob who is Mick's current graded search dog. Bob is now becoming a little long in the tooth and approaching a well earned retirement from active service.

On Sunday 8th October the team were requested by North West Ambulance Service to attend an incident in the plantation under Alphin, where a teenage male had taken a fall of his mountain bike and sustained an injury.

This incident came not long after the Oldham dog handlers had finished hosting a SARDA training weekend in and around Chew Valley. Being still in the area, dog handler and former Team Leader Mick Nield was one of the first to respond to the incident. Now Mick’s current search dog Bob is a regular attendee on callouts however Dave the dog, Mick’s new puppy, is still only weeks old and has yet to experience an incident. Obviously rather than leaving Dave locked up Mick took him along in the team vehicle.

Dave isn’t allowed to go on the hill on a call and had to stay under supervision in the vehicle during the incident. However, never underestimate the value a new team member brings and on this occasion Dave proved the best First Aid is a bit of TLC ably provided whilst in the control vehicle en route to Tameside A&E. The journey seemed to be far less painful for Archie, the lad in question, with a little bit of puppy therapy...............Here’s to many more callouts Dave!

Could you make a difference? Do you want a job (voluntary of course!)? Have you got time to spare and oodles of patience? Do you give good cuddles?

Then read on........... We have a few volunteers who come to the rescue to spend their precious time with some of our timid cats who need that extra bit of time and patience to help them gain trust and form relationships with humans. Alison Howard is one such volunteer and here is what she says about her time at EAR; “I am new to Eden Animal Rescue as a volunteer cat cuddler. I have worked with many cats over the years both friendly and feral. I visit about twice weekly and every visit is different with new cats that have arrived and the ones that have been re-homed. I worked with one girl, Olivia who was very feral, we chatted, we sang and we stroked. Over time her confidence grew and she learned what love felt like, she is now the most beautiful girl. It took time and patience which I have to give. Another two of my favourite friends are little Tinkerbell and Rodney. Going into see them gets them up out of their beds, they get love and cuddles and they give back so much love. These visits give the cats so much to look forward too. I would urge anyone who could spare a

little time each week to give cat cuddling a go as what you give to them is very rewarding and I

personally go away knowing my visit was worthwhile as I see the difference it makes to our furry

friends.”

Who Rescued Who? I went out to rescue a dog that day to give him a really good life To take him away from the life he led and free him from trouble and strife I thought I would do him a favour and be a good person to him And go do my bit for the country - I didn’t go out on a whim But what do you think really did happen the day that I did my good deed? I discovered a love that I’d dreamed of and fulfilled in myself a strong need I now have a dog that I care for; I see things that I need to see That lovely dog that I rescued..........really ended up rescuing me!

Anonymous (but I’m sure lots of us who have rescued an animal will identify with it!)

A Golden Wedding Leads to a Welcome Bonus for Rescue Centre

Eden Animal Rescue welcomed a visit from Derek and Maureen Hodgson recently, following their Golden Wedding celebrations. Rather than receiving gifts the couple asked for donations which

would be split between the Great North Air Ambulance and Eden Animal Rescue. They presented a cheque for a fantastic £570!

In 2012 their daughter Alex Bell rehomed a beautiful Labrador x Border Collie called Bella. Bella lives with her doggy pal, Jack. Owner Alex said "I have to say adopting Bella was one of the best things we have ever done......we won't say we rescued, as we feel that she probably rescued us more than we could have rescued her". Mr and Mrs Hodgson, who had 3 generations of King Charles Cavaliers, said that the donation was for the care of the dogs, cats, kittens and bunnies in the centre's care. Lynn Healey the centre's Development Manager said "We couldn't open our doors without the generosity of supporters like Mr and Mrs Hodgson. Our vet bills alone exceed £3000 each month, so huge thanks from all of the team at Eden Animal Rescue"

Miss Santa Paws Miss Santa Paws was found abandoned on a country lane on a cold wet windy night in November with a badly broken leg, to fend for herself. She was about 8 weeks old and very friendly so we believe she must have belonged to someone. Miss Santa Paws was lucky that night, as a kind rescue angel took her in and cared for her until they took her to the vets the next day . The diagnosis wasn't good, she had sustained a severe fracture that was very unstable and displaced so unfortunately Miss Santa Paws had to have her right hind leg removed. There wasn't another option available as it appeared to have been broken for some time. The cost of this surgery was £308.84p, but the welfare of our animals is always the priority, our aim is to "Rescue, Care and Rehome", the cost is secondary.

Miss Santa Paws is now at the centre in our kitten unit receiving lots of TLC from staff and volunteers and recovering well from such huge life changing surgery. She is an absolute cuddle baby who loves attention.

She's eating well and is adapting amazingly well.

We are pleased to say she is reserved pending socialisation with another pet.

Posh Cats Many people have the misconception that all rescue cats are bedraggled moggies who come into the Rescue as a stray. However this is often not the case and over the past few years we have had several ‘posh’ breeds come into our care. These pedigree cats have included several of the stunning Ragdoll breed and recently we have re-homed two beautiful British Shorthaired cats. In September we had two groups of Siamese cats come in from two different places. One of the groups were very friendly and the other group was very scared of any form of human contact. One of this group, Clara, was very poorly with cat flu and was immediately isolated. We were very concerned about her and the prognosis did not look very good at all. Over the next few weeks she was given medication and lots of extra TLC and eventually began to perk up. All the volunteers fell in love with her. For people who do not know the Siamese breed they are very vocal and once Clara began to feel better her pathetic meows became stronger and she would tell you such a sad story and rub against your legs when you went in to clean her pen. One of the people who succumbed to Clara’s charms was Bill from the EAR shop who has re-homed her. Here he tells the story of the love affair.......... By one of those strange coincidences that life often throws up, the name Clara had been very much on my mind the week of the open day when I met Clara for the first time. I had been researching the original owner of one of the books in my library, Clara Teasdale - Human Clara was born in Penrith in 1896, the daughter of a local farmer, and her childhood years were full of tragedy as she lost two of her four siblings and her mother before she was fifteen, the most likely cause being consumption. I did not need the impetus of those sad family tragedies to feel additional empathy for Cat Clara, the sight of her runny nose and weeping eyes was more than enough, and the fact that she was all over me like a rash was the clincher - this was a cat who badly needed a special forever home. The only doubt was, how would she fit in with our other six cats! For the first three nights I slept downstairs to monitor how things developed. Our other cats are temperamentally very stable, and presented no problems at all, Clara, however, was determined to be Top Cat. If she wanted to sit on your lap and another cat was already established in that prime position, she would simply give them a nip and occupy the hurriedly vacated space. Patience was required, and over three weeks relationships gradually changed. When she realised that she did not have to fight for position or favour, she gradually (as the Borg menacingly state in Star Trek), became assimilated. We are quite happy to live with the long term effects of her cat flu, manifesting as extra veterinary visits, regular sneezing and dirty windows (she loves to sit on the windowsills above the radiators and her nasal detritus forms delicate patterns on the glass). As I write this she has just left my lap, adding a few letters to the page as she delicately steps across my computer keyboard, and is now warmly ensconced on a radiator. I should add that our radiators are cushioned with soft cat blankets to ensure a gentle diffusion of heat from radiator to cat. I just wish we had a man-sized

radiator - I would happily join her. Bill Crothers Hettie, Eric and Adam were a second group of Siamese cats who came in together and we were very loathe to split them up. We adopted our 3 gorgeous Siamese cats 1 week ago today so I thought I'd

share some photos. I can't believe how quickly they settled in after their long

journey south and arrival into a home with a cat already in situ. It's been

amazing and we are loving every minute. We can see how much they were

loved in their previous home by how happy and playful they have been here,

and we feel that they are a precious gift for us to continue to treasure. And

we will. And with grateful thanks to Sarah, Alex and all the staff and volunteers at EAR who

dedicate so much love and kindness to these animals in their care , whilst in pursuit of finding

their forever homes. Awesome team. Wendy (Hettie, Eric and Adam’s new Mum)

Sarah, Centre Manager says “All our animals want for Christmas is a home.....it’s not a lot to ask for......is it?”

We see many fantastic animals come and go at the rescue and we all have our own personal favourites! But some animals touch us all and that is particularly true of the ones that end up in our care for long periods. We currently have several animals that fall into this group that we would like to tell you about. Our hope is that the right person reads their stories and gets in touch… so they needn't spend Christmas in rescue. Spot is a lovely mature lady of 12 years and has been in care for over 2 years. We are looking for a super special mum who lives in a rural area and can offer her a nice quiet retirement home either permanently or as a long-term foster parent in which to spend her final years. Spot takes a while to get to know people and trust them but once she does, she is friendly and

loyal. She is healthy, active and enjoys her walks.

Willow is a 4 year old Presa Canario cross. She can be wary of strangers when she first meets them, especially men, but if she is approached in the right way she comes round very quickly. She is a sweet and affectionate dog once she knows you and will make a very loyal pet. She needs an experienced owner who has had large breeds before.

Lillian is a 4 year old female Shar Pei who needs a home with no young children and no other pets. She’s very friendly and affectionate once she bonds with you but can get jealous at times. She will benefit from someone who knows the breed and can give her some basic training.

Tilly is a 2 year old female Lurcher. She is a very friendly, loving girl who craves human

company. She gets very attached to her owner and has separation anxiety, she needs a

home where there is someone around most/all of the time, with someone who can put

time into improving this with her. Tilly is very friendly with other dogs and loves to play,

but would be best as the only dog at first.

Beeb is a 7 year old stunning male Lurcher who loves people and is very playful when out and

about. He can be temperamental with other dogs when out on walks and would need to be the

only pet.

Kai is a 9 year old male Staffie who is a friendly fellow. He really enjoys the

company of people but does not like other dogs or cats. Kai loves playing with toys

on our paddock and a home for Christmas for this lovely elderly gentleman would be the best

Christmas present he could get.

Rodney and Tinkerbell are 11 years old. They came in together after being

abandoned. Tinkerbell was quite unwell when she came to the centre and after tests we

have found out the she has diabetes and is now on insulin injections twice daily which

she is happy to have as they have made her feel much better. Rodney has had polyps

in his ears but they need no further treatment. He has a great personality and both

Rodney and his sister Tinkerbell will bring much love and joy to the lucky people who

offer them a second chance of happiness.

CJ is a domestic short haired tabby and white male. He needs a home that has someone

around most of the time as he loves company. He is a great adventurer so a rural home will

suit him best. He is very friendly most of the time but can sometimes be a little

temperamental. He could live with older children.

Are you the right person for one of these lovely animals????????

The Dog Socialisation Room (aka The Cuddle Lounge)

Along with a paddock run and a lead walk each dog has the opportunity to spend some time every day in close contact with a human in the dog socialisation room. This room has been designed to be like a home with settees, table and chairs, a television, a radio and curtains and offers the dogs an opportunity to become familiar with a

home environment. Dogs may find certain household noises frightening and in order to prepare them for everyday life there are appliances that make noises such as a tumble drier, hoover, a fan and a doorbell. Some of our dogs may never have experienced this and so by introducing them gradually to a new situation it improves their chance of a successful re-homing. In Rocky’s case, (pictured right) to reduce his stress, he first went into the room with his friend Pippa who gave him the confidence to explore his new surroundings. The dogs can also choose to be indoors or outdoors as there is a small enclosed garden. This allows a dog to explore both the indoor and outdoor environment at their leisure.

A Jolly Good Read—looking to buy a gift for an animal lover? Have you read a good animal related book that you really enjoyed and would like to recommend to other like minded animal lovers? If you want to share your views and write a short review of the book we could publish it in the next newsletter. Here are 2 books definitely worth reading:

Finding Harmony by Sally Hyder This is a heart warming true story about a remarkable dog that helped a family through the darkest of times. Sally Hyder was only 28 years old when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She was a keen mountaineer and had been training to be a Macmillan nurse to care for the terminally ill. Now confined to a wheelchair, Sally has help with everyday tasks from her Canine Partner, Harmony, who has enabled her to lead an independent life.

A Street Cat named Bob The moving, uplifting true story of an unlikely friendship between a man on the streets and the ginger cat who adopts him and helps him heal his life. Amazing relationship, leading to life changes for James. This book has now been made into a very enjoyable film.

Emma and Bonnie It is always a challenge to re-home a pair of cats together. Emma and Bonnie came in together and had such a strong bond that splitting them up was not an option. We are pleased to tell you that they have found their forever home together. Here they are all snuggled up together just a week after being re-homed. Thank you to their lovely new owners for adopting them and giving them a second chance of happiness.

Update on Molly

Remember the lovely Molly who had a heart operation whilst in EAR’s care?

Well here’s a quick update on how she is getting on. Her new owner, Jen, has

started to take her to agility training and she’s absolutely loving it.

Molly is going from strength to strength, enjoying walking on the local fells. In mid October she had her first agility training session. (I decided on lessons, I knew Molly would be fine, but wasn’t so sure about me!) On this first lesson we were taught how to get Molly to go over small jumps, and to go through a tunnel. From the start she was so excited that she was going quicker than I could, so we spent a

lot of time with me fumbling for the right words and Molly turning at high speed on the spot waiting. Our trainer Faye likened her to a washing machine on fast spin! Over the next few sessions we were introduced to other equipment and after four weeks we could put a short circuit together; over the A frame, three or four jumps, tunnel, back over jumps, and up and over the dog walk, (she walks up a slope across a plank at head height, down the other side), we also started to introduce her to the see-saw. This is all so exciting for Molly she frequently takes off on her own and does a few pieces of apparatus just for the sheer pleasure of running, jumping, and climbing. From the look on her face and the permanently wagging tail you can tell how much she is loving it. Molly also took part in the walk in aid of Eden Animal Rescue, organised by Kerry of ‘Max and Paddy in the Lake District’. There were dozens of people and dogs, all walking along the banks of Derwentwater. Most dogs went off lead where it was safe and there were no livestock, it was with great delight that I allowed Molly to run off lead too. She joined in with the others, but drew the line at joining with the many springer spaniels led by Max and Paddy at the half way point, who decided there would be nothing better than a cooling swim! What will Molly do next? Continue with her agility certainly, fell walking, but continuing her

general training and getting her to be even better than she already is.

Santa Paws Charity Walk Lingholm Kitchen Gardens, with Max and Paddy

What a fantastic day we had with Max and Paddy in Keswick this weekend. Once again, these two special Spaniels and lots of their wonderful followers did us proud. Our fantastic volunteer Jen brought her rescue

dog Molly and Lynn our Development Manager walked Tilly, a beautiful Lurcher who is looking for her forever home! Donations came from over 70 dog walkers and 50 well behaved dogs and like all good get togethers fancy dress was optional with some dogs wearing Xmas antler headbands! It was cold so no dogs would be swimming would they?????? But they did ............and thoroughly enjoyed it. We cannot thank you enough for the raft of donations! We were blown away by your generosity! (Lynn had a little tear!!) A huge thank you for ‘suppawting’ our walk today from The Lingholm Kitchen & Walled Garden and ACANA UK & Ireland for the all the treats. A massive thank you to all who braved the cold and brought gifts and donations for Eden Animal Rescue Tilly was checking out what treats were in the HUGE pile of gifts! We also received £85 in donations too! And thanks to the fantastic baker who raised £24.55 selling her Christmas cookies! It never fails to astonish us how truly generous people are, you were amazing thank you x Huge thanks too to Acana, sponsors of Max and Paddy. We can't wait for the next walk!

A year in the life of the Eden Animal Rescue Fundraisers...

What a busy year we have had! From bag packs to dog shows and sponsored walks our calendar of events continues to grow. Many of you hopefully have managed to get to some of our events and to those who have helped out and those who have supported and given we cannot thank you enough. A lot of planning goes into our big events. We nervously look at the long term weather forecast and keep our fingers crossed. Sometimes when we wake up and the date planned so long in advance turns out to be cold and rainy our hearts sink. However we try to keep optimistic and most of all we know our most dedicated volunteers and supporters will be there if they can. Our gazebos remain a challenge... Are there enough? Are they big enough and have we got all the right bits? We have laughed and cried at times when the wind is blowing and we seem to be missing that vital part that will keep them up. Luckily we always seem to have with us that great person who can solve any problem! The support from our local Community has been incredible this year. We would like to say a really big ‘Thank you’ to the Co-op, M&S, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s, Booths and Pets at Home for supporting us in so many different ways. It’s a great way of meeting the Public and raising awareness of what we do. We had exceptional fun at the two fashion shows held for us by M&Co in Penrith. After much encouragement and cajoling our nervous models I do believe would now not look out of place on the catwalk in Paris! Thank you to all of them for being so brave and to Bill, Nina, Janine, Steven and his staff for these lovely evenings. We have so many talented people who year after year choose to use their particular talent such as card making, crafts or baking to support the rescue. Our events just wouldn’t be a success if we did not have people like you. We want you to know just how appreciated you all are. To all the individuals who have donned a bright green fluorescent tabard and helped with our events be it bag packing, standing with a bucket in the freezing cold, manning a stall, organising raffles, making jam or helping out at our coffee mornings we would like to say a huge ‘Thank you’. Along the way we have met some fabulous people and it is heartening to see how generous individuals can be, not only by donating goods and money but that most precious commodity... your time. Our biggest challenge nowadays is often to find something different to do that will capture people’s interests and raise much needed funds. If you have any ideas or you would like to hold a fundraising event for us please do get in touch. Your help and ideas would be so welcome. By the way we have a bag pack at Morrison’s on Saturday 23rd December. Please help us fill the

rota, just an hour of your time would be a great help. Call Sandra if you can help on

07805878828.

So Long, Farewell....... Eden Animal Rescue would like to bid a fond farewell to two Trustees who have been involved with the charity for many years. Chris Ellison and Dawn Wicks are both standing down from the role of trustee. The charity is grateful for the time, commitment and passion that they have shown for and to EAR. Chris has been involved with the rescue and has spearheaded the fundraising team for many years raising thousands of pounds for the animals and will con-

tinue to support with fundraising. Dawn was a volunteer at Hardendale before she joined the Trustees and shared her extensive knowledge and expertise of both rabbits and cats and has particular knowledge regarding legisla-tion. She would like to give more time to her family but she will continue to volunteer at MHF. We are sure they will both continue to take an avid interest in the developments of the charity and wish them all the best in their future ventures.

Thank you to Appleby Co-op

We want to thank all of the wonderful Co-op members who have voted for Eden Animal Rescue! We have been presented with a donation of £1,925.79 through the marvellous Community Fund. We were one of three groups to be chosen to receive donations. Here we are being presented with the cheque by the lovely staff. We are very grateful.........thank you soooooooo much.

Miracles Can Happen! My beloved cat Ruby went missing early morning on the 12th September. The first

week I was frantic, as I'm sure my family, friends and colleagues will all agree with.

Facebook posts, searches, leaflets through doors, sleepless nights and lots of tears

and tantrums. It was totally out of character for her and she seemed to disappear

into thin air.

There were possible sightings and I actually convinced myself one of the sightings was her, rushed to the

house where this black long haired cat was sitting on the outside of a kitchen window with Chris my

husband watching from the car, shouting at me it wasn't her and to get back in the car.

I was willing it to be her even though deep down I knew it wasn't, I even picked this cat up and then when

she didn't have a tail the penny dropped and I was quickly whisked away with a very disapproving husband.

Sue Emmerson one of our long standing volunteers, started a Facebook page

sometime ago, for Lost and Found Pets in Penrith and carried on sharing my missing

post for Ruby when I had lost all hope.

Then on the evening of Sunday 26th November some 11 weeks later, I received a

message from Sue to say she didn't want to get my hopes up but a lady from

Penruddock some 7 miles from my home had messaged her after seeing the missing

post on her Facebook page about Ruby. She had sent Sue a picture which of course

Sue immediately sent to me. Instantly I knew it was her, but I didn't dare to believe it. But then the golden

moment when I was told this cat had been scanned for a chip and she had the chip number. It matched

Ruby's and Chris and I were at the farm in Penruddock within 20 minutes and Ruby was back home with

us. Yes there were tears! And not just mine!!!!

I can't stress how important it is that everyone microchips their cats, never to give up

hope and I never thought 11 weeks on Ruby would be home with us.

We as a family can never thank Sue enough for her dedication to helping not only Ruby

but other pets missing in our area and not just the cats that have owners but the poor

strays that don't. Boris, Percy and Tom to name just a few all came to the centre

through Sue’s love and dedication to helping the strays of Penrith.

Thank you to everyone that has sent good wishes to Ruby, she is doing well and for the

time being is well and truly grounded. Alex Bowness x

Online Shopping Many people nowadays shop from the comfort of their armchair via the internet using online shopping. There are sites such as fundraising.org.uk and giveasyoulive to name just a couple where it doesn’t cost a penny extra to use the site and they make a donation to your chosen charity (hopefully Eden Animal Rescue). It’s easy to set up and when you buy goods at sites like Amazon, groceries at Sainsbury's and M&S, and hotel/travel booking companies like booking.com a small percentage will go to Eden Animal Rescue. One of our supporters has been using it for a while and she has raised nearly £50 for EAR. So with over 1,000 supporters it’s well worth doing and such a quick and easy way to raise funds for us.

Leaving a Legacy

With Christmas just around the corner I’m sure lots of us are thinking about what we can give to others as a Christmas present.

This is obviously a difficult subject to write about, because no-one wants to think about dying. But, I would like to think that when the time comes I will have put my house in order and planned accordingly. I also want to think that I’ve made a difference to this world. It was thanks to some very thoughtful people and generous legacies that Eden Animal Rescue were able to buy our current property at Moorlands Head Farm.

Hopefully this helps you understand just how much leaving a legacy to EAR in your will could help. You have read the success stories in this and previous newsletters and we can only ensure the certain future of the animals and the charity with future legacies. We faced a tremendous challenge turning a farmhouse with a couple of barns and some good paddocks into a comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable an experience for our animals to live in. Over the last year we have worked hard at MHF and are very proud of all the developments. But our work is not finished and we have future plans for the property. We would like a dedicated groom room to be able to wash and bath the dogs when they come in from the muddy paddocks and we would like a small medical room where the animals can be treated by the vets and staff in a calm quiet place. Legacies continue to be so important in determining what we can do and our future direction. We fully appreciate that not everyone will be in a position where they can help in this way, but if you are then please read on......... There is a simple guide to help you through the process of remembering Eden Animal Rescue in your will. If you have already made a Will, and it is up to date, then you can add to it by having a solicitor draw up a codicil. This will leave the existing will completely unchanged and is simple and inexpensive to do. Alternatively, if you have not yet made a Will and you would like to pass on a legacy to EAR then you should seek the advice of a solicitor and ask them to draw up a Will based upon your wishes. We know not everyone will be able to do this, but if you can please consider donating to us.

What a difference a few weeks make! This is the lovely Alfie one of the 6 puppies brought to the Rescue from Ireland (he was called Bingo when he was in the Rescue). Here he is on the left just after he was re-homed . Now almost 5 months old (pictured right) and doing very well in his new home. His new family are very pleased with his progress. And so are we.

We love the ears Alfie!

Prizes. We are always looking for prizes for our events. They could be a small prize suitable for the tombola or a large prize of an offer of a day such as the off road driving prize in our last grand raffle. Unwanted gifts are always particularly welcome, some of which could be sold in our shop. If you have any such items you could donate then please contact the Centre or take them to the shop.

As you are planning your Christmas festivities? Please spare a thought for the animals who will be spending their Christmas at the rescue. We would be grateful for donations of tinned or pouches of cat food, dried cat food, scratching posts and toys to keep the cats and kittens happy. We currently have enough tinned/wet dog food, as we prefer to give them dried food (it seems to reduce tummy upsets), but we do need boxes of Bonio or Shape biscuits and dog toys. We would also appreciate boxes of washing powder, black bin bags, toilet rolls and the odd packet of biscuits for our deserving volunteers. Thank you
