Sika Solutions for Floors in Car Parks

Car park flooring systems have many dif ferent requirements ranging from deck waterproofing and wear resistance to design possibilities. Sika has a wide portfolio of Sikafloor® car park systems specially designed for all of these different applications and requirements. The systems are based on epoxy technologies for the hard wearing surfaces and polyurethane resins for crack-bridging and waterproofing. From a technical point of view, the main function of these Sikafloor® deck systems is to protect the rein-forced concrete structure and prevent the ingress of water and corrosive de-icing salts. There-fore, crack-bridging properties are frequently essential to ac-commodate the thermal and dy-namic loading movement of the structure, especially on composite structures and in exposed areas. Ramps usually require the system to have a higher degree of slip resistance, plus they are much more exposed to mechanical stress, which the Sikafloor® sys-tems can easily accommodate.

Sikafloor® car park deck water-proofing systems can be designed to the colour and area demarcation scheme of your choice. A bright and well-lit car park helps to im-prove safety and security, plus this also makes the visitors feel more comfortable.

In car parks floor the joints can be sealed with Sikaflex® seal-ants, which are able to resist traffic loads from the cars and cleaning machines passing over them. They will retain their prop-erties in direct contact with oils and fuel, and withstand the weathering when used externally. Sikaflex® sealants have high me-chanical strength, high abrasion and chemical resistance with ex-cellent substrate adhesion in the joints.

Rizon Jet Hangar, Biggin Hill Airport, Kent, United Kingdom

Project:A new multi million pound private jet aircraft hangar with a floor area of 13’000 m2.

Sika solutions:A robust and abrasion resistant floor with a very high quality finish was required and this was provided using Sikafloor® EpoCem applied as a damp-proof membrane, followed by a Sikafloor® 3 mm self-levelling system. Walkways were marked with Sikafloor® coat- ings and given a matt finish. The kitchen and catering areas had a 9 mm screed of Sikafloor® Purcem. Battery rooms were pro-tected with a Sikafloor® chemically resis-tant and anti-static system. Workshops and other areas were sealed and protected with Sikafloor® coating systems. Additionally the hangar floor joints were all sealed with Sikaflex® sealants and the structural steel column bases were grouted with SikaGrout®.

Sika Solutions for Floors in Aircraft Hangars

Aircraft hangars are principally garages and maintenance work-shops for aircraft. Leaking hydraulic oils, cleaning chemicals and high mechanical loadings can all attack and damage the floors. Protection of the workforce with regard to preventing slips and falls with ade quate slip resistance, dis-charging static electrical charges to prevent instrument malfunction or even explosion in the event of a spark, can all be additional special requirements for hangar floors. Therefore a range of different so- lutions and systems could be re-quired. Sikafloor® flooring sys-tems for hangars can accom- modate the heavy loads in addi-tion to allowing freedom of floor surface design and fulfill all the requirement mentioned above. Easy cleaning and low mainte-nance costs with a long service life are also the essential perfor-mance of Sikafloor® for the opti-mum hangar flooring solutions.

As Sika systems are selected ac-cording to each area’s specific needs, the Sikafloor® systems will be durable and maintain their good appearance; whilst satisfying the health and safety criteria for the maintenance personnel.

These Sikafloor® solutions are 100% solids and solvent free, which also helps to ensure worker safety. They are fast curing, which puts the aircraft hangar back into service with an absolute mini-mum down time.

The Sikafloor® system technolo-gies are based on epoxy and polyurethane resins. The defined system build-ups are then tested accor ding to many different stan-dards regarding H&S, including AgBB, etc., which also serves to underline Sika’s strategy to be the leading flooring company with re-gard to sustainability.

Airport freight handling and other logistics areas include: ware-housing, loading bays, ramps etc., where the floors must be extremely abrasion and wear re- sistant due to the heavy traffic, plus the areas must also be dust-free and easy to clean. Sometimes these floors can require additional chemical or fire resistance, anti-slip properties, resistance to ex-tremes of hot or cold temperatures and other specific performance demands, according to the function of the areas. Sikafloor® Deco® Floor systems are certified to fulfil the specific needs of these fright and logistic areas and they have high aesthetic appearance.

Sikafloor® Deco® Floor systems are based on low emission, UV resistant, high performance epoxy resins that are tested according to

the stringent out-gassing proce-dures of the German AgBB scheme.

Their surface finishes can be ad-justed from smooth to highly slip resistant for safety and allow indi-vidual and decorative floor designs. These can also be used in com-mercial and retail areas, including restaurants baggage claim and all of the logistics areas in an airport.

Sikafloor® solutions for food pro-cessing areas are designed to protect concrete floors with an ap-propriate seamless and hygienic coating. In food areas the floors are typically exposed to all sorts of food products, including drink-ing water, hot oils, sugars and fruit acids, plus wide variations in temperature, exposure to clean-ing agents, etc., which could all cause serious damage to unpro-

tected concrete surfaces. These aggressive materials can also penetrate into the concrete sur-faces, resulting in the growth of dangerous bacteria. Polyure -thane resin modified cementi-tious screeds, such as Sikafloor® PurCem® systems, are fully resis-tant, durable and therefore ideal to meet all of the individual re-quirements.

To make the floor finishes seam-less and joint-free, Sikaflex® sealants are used to also seal the move ment and connection joints in all of these floor areas. These have high mechanical and chemical resistance, prevent dirt and bacteria build-up, are easy to clean and fully resistant to clean-ing agents and cleaning ma-chines. They cure bubble-free and are easy to apply.

Phuket International Airport,Thailand

Project:This is the second busiest airport in Thailand in terms of passenger numbers, as Phuket is one of the most popular resorts and tourist destinations in the country.

Sika solutions:Sika provided Sika® Deco® Floor systems for the floors in the baggage claim areas and the arrival areas to fulfil the requirements that included: being dust-free, with good re-sistance to mechanical abrasion and heavy foot traffic, ease of cleaning, plus the floors also had to be comfortable underfoot for standing passengers. Sika® Sarnafil® roofing membrane systems were also used for the terminal building roofs at the airport.

16 I 17

Nike Store, Thessaloniki, Greece

Project:This Nike store is in the Mediterranean Cosmos Mall, located east of Thessaloniki adjacent to the airport. This mall is currently the largest in Northern Greece, consisting of 220 stores, plus 37 restaurants and cafes. This particular floor’s requirements were for it to have an “athletic” look that fits with the Nike brand, it had to be installed and finished in 5 days, be pleasant underfoot for the customers, easy to maintain, easy to clean, and of course tough and resilient enough to withstand a lot of pedestrian traf-fic and still look good.

Sika solution:The flooring solution selected to fulfil all of these requirements was a Sika® Comfort- Floor® system – this produces a perma-nently elastic, polyurethane resin based floor. It is solvent free with very low VOC emissions, easy to maintain and has good mechanical resistance to withstand heavy pedestrian traffic. This Sika resin flooring system was combined with a wooden area in the centre of the store.

Sika Solutions for Floors in Public and Commercial Areas

Sika has developed Sika® Com-fortfloor® and Sika® Deco® Floor systems as durable and deco-rative flooring solutions espe-cially for use in the different public and commercial areas of an airpor t including retail and shopping areas, passenger lounges, restaurants and offices, because these areas has require-ments like high aesthetic floor surfaces, sound damping prop-erty, good indoor quality with lowest class of VOC emissions, according to guidelines and regu-lations, comfortable underfoot experience, easy to clean and maintain, etc.. These Sikafloor® ranges can have various system build-ups where dif ferent co-loured resins are combined with decorative coloured flakes and aggregates, which allows the customers to create many attrac-tive and individual finishes incl. extend the corporate identity onto the floors.

This Sika® Comfortfloor® and Sika® Deco® Floor range has been tested and approved to the most stringent global standards for VOC emissions including LEED, AgBB, AFSSET, M1 etc., plus they also have the lowest fire ratings.

The floor joints in these public and commercial areas can be durably sealed with Sikaflex® sealants. These are tough and resilient, with high mechanical resistance and provide a seam-less floor finish without risk of damage. They are also resistant to cleaning fluids and high pres-sure water cleaning machines.

Sika Solutions for Steel Structures

Functionality and flexibility are key design factors for the owners, their architects, and the management of airport terminals and hangars. Structural steelwork is generally the most suitable material to create these wide-span structures. However, the steel structure has very high demands not only for its function and aesthetic appear-ance, but also for its fire protec-tion property.

Sika has therefore developed specific coating systems com-bining fire protection and aes-thetics. Sika® Unitherm® is an ideal solution and its perform-ance is backed up by extensive references at airports and other public buildings. Sika® Unitherm® fire protection systems are intume-scent coatings, which are typically applied in layers from 0.5 – 3 mm thickness. They expand in fire situa tions to create an air filled insulation layer to protect the steel from high temperatures, which could otherwise result in structural failure.

For exposed areas of structural steelwork, where the focus is on protecting the steel against corro-sion, the SikaCor® range pro-vides durable coating solutions for all types and levels of corro-sion exposure.

Sika’s steel protection technolo-gies are based on epoxy, polyure-thane and other modified resins and the systems are available in an almost unlimited colour range to suit your design. This Sika® range also includes many prod-ucts for special application and they are developed with low VOC emissions and as high-build sys-tems to reduce application time and costs.

Sika has a proven global track re-cord and has achieved success in the protection of prestige steel structures all over the world on many different airport buildings and facilities. Sika systems also comply with the latest relevant standards including ISO 12944 for steel corrosion protection.

Typical Applications Sika Solutions Special CharacteristicsStructural steel SikaCor® Steel Protect VHS Multi-purpose coatings for the corrosion protection of steel structures.

Transport structures Sika® Poxicolor® Plus Very economic and durable corrosion protection coatings with low solvent content.

Fire protection Sika® Unitherm® DS Water based intumescent fire protection system. High performance and relatively low consumption.

Dubai International Airport, United Arab Emirates

Project:In phase II of this major airport development, seven “Emirates” aircraft hangars were also built for their aircraft service and mainte-nance, including their paint shop and large enough to accommodate all of the specialist functions and personnel required for this sophisticated operation – large enough in fact to be used for their fleet of giant Airbus A 380 aircraft.

Sika solutions:The structural steelwork for the hangars had to be protected against fire for a mini-mum of 60 minutes. This high performance fire protection was provided by the Sika® Unitherm® system. The structural steel on the pedestrian bridges from the terminal to the airplanes was also coated with the same system. The technical workshops needed to have wall surfaces with minimal VOC / AMC or particle emissions, therefore Sikagard® coating systems were applied on all of these walls to meet the necessary standards, plus the Sika® Permacor® system was used for the interior coating and lining of the drinking water storage tanks (ap-proved for potable water contact).

Airfield & Runways, Kloten Airport, Zurich, Switzerland

Project:For many years Sika has been the reliable partner to the owners and their professional construction teams in the expansion and refurbishment of this important airport in Switzerland, with Sika support “from the basement to the roof” with a full range of specialist solutions.

Sika solutions:Sika® ViscoCrete® technology and many other Sika concrete admixtures have been used extensively for the airfield concrete production, in order to create the majority of all of the different structures on the airfield – for the runways, taxiways and aprons. Sika has also provided SikaCem®, Sikadur® Pronto and SikaAntisol® for the repair and refurbishment of the concrete runways over the decades. The joints on the runways were sealed also with Sika sealants.

22 I 23

Sika provides admixtures to produce high-performance concrete for runways, taxi-ways and aprons at airports that has to meet very specific re-quirements. These large surface areas are fully exposed to heavy rainfall, intense frost, ice and snow, with frequent thermal shock conditions, plus high impact and abrasion stress. In addition, strong de-icing agents are used, frequent-ly with heavy duty mechanical ice and snow clearing machines. This further increases the demands on the concrete and especially on the edges of the slabs.

Aircraft traffic areas at airports are almost always now laid with concrete paving machines. These handle the relatively stiff con-crete mixes with a low water ce-ment ratio. Sika® ViscoCrete® technology is used for to maintain consistence with this high level of water reduction. SikaAer® is added to give the concrete in-

creased frost resistance, plus with SikaRapid® technology, high early strength is achieved.

With these concrete mixes the “shape” of the fresh concrete is maintained more effectively and greatly increased flexural strengths are also obtained. SikaFume® is used to increase pozzolanic reac-tions at the micro-level of the ag-gregate / hydrated cement contact zones, especially with crushed stone aggregates. After placement these concrete surfaces are pro-tected against premature drying out through evaporation with Sika® Antisol® curing compounds. The skid resistance of the surface can also be improved by an ex-posed aggregate finish created with Sika® Rugasol®.

When airfield concrete needs to be repaired, Sika also has excellent refurbishment solutions. Time is of the essence when repairing spalls, cracks and damage on airfields

which are still in daily use. In most cases, there are only a few hours during the night to carry out these repair works. Sikadur® Pronto mortars are fast curing, two part acrylic resin based systems that are ideal for repairing run-way damage. After the area is prepared by removing the dete-riorated material and thorough cleaning, the Sikadur® Pronto mortar is placed. The repair areas can also be fixed mechanically to the substrate with steel anchors to prevent any uplift possibilities. These repaired runway surfaces will be cured and ready for the first take-offs and landings in the morning.

To seal the joints on airfields and taxiways, Sika has devel-oped special Sikaflex® sealants with high tear resistance and flexibility, plus resistance to heavy mechanical stress and exposure to aircraft oils and fuels.

Sika Solutions for Concrete Structures

Concrete structures and elements make up the major part of airport buildings and structures. Sika provides admixtures and addi-tives that have been developed to support the production of high quality concretes for these structures.

Watertight concrete is frequently important, because airports are often located in wide flat areas where the ground water level can be very high. In addition, there are large paved areas which are exposed to heavy rainfall and flooded with surface water. Sika® ViscoCrete® and Sika® WT con-crete admixtures produce water-tight concrete that is ideal for the construction of watertight base-ments and underground facilities such as car parks and transport system tunnels.

For durable precast concrete ele-ments such as pillars, tunnel seg-ments, Sika® ViscoCrete® and Sika Rapid® technology is used to ensure their optimum rates of production and gain of strength, plus high quality units with an excellent surface finish are ob-tained.

Airport buildings usually have huge dimensions, especially the terminal check-in and baggage reclaim areas for example, so the large areas of concrete in these structures can be susceptible ex-posed to high shrinkage. The use of Sika® Control® technology can be used to restrict and control this problem.

From an aesthetic point of view, airport buildings are always ar-chitecturally challenging projects.

Through the use of Sika® PerFin® and Sika® ColorFlo®, a wide range of attractive coloured con-crete surfaces and textures can add to your design possibilities.

Hammamet International Airport, Enfidha, Tunisia

Project:This is a recently constructed airport locat-ed at Enfidha in Tunisia. It is a state-of-the-art international airport complex with first class shopping, restaurants, entertainment facilities and full services for airlines and their passengers. Sika provided a full range of systems to produce high performance concrete and many other specialist con-struction solutions for this airport project.

Sika solutions:Sikament® concrete admixtures were used to produce the concrete piles, the rein-forced concrete elements of the superstruc-ture and the floor slabs; Sika® ViscoCrete® technology was used to achieve a concrete strength of C35 at 72 hours for defined ar-eas; Sika WaterStops were cast into the concrete for sealing the expansion joints; Sika Separol® de-moulding agents were used where steel formwork was utilised. Sikadur® adhesives were used for anchoring steel bars and bolts for structural steelwork. Cement based non-shrink SikaGrout® was used to grout the column bases and other areas on the structure. The Sika® Carbodur® strengthening system was used to increase the design load bearing capacity of some elements.Sika® Ceram® adhesives were used for lay-ing the terminals sandstone floor tiles. Sika® Monotop® mortars were used for localised concrete repairs as the works progressed and were finished to the correct line and profile; plus SikaTop® mortars were used for the protective coating of drinking water storage reservoirs. Sikaflex® PU sealants were used for horizontal joint sealing be-tween concrete and asphalt surfaces, with Sikasil® silicone sealants used for sealing between granite and aluminium materials in the terminals; plus Sikasil® SG systems were used for structural glazing of the air-port terminal structures.

Henri Coandă International Airport New Terminal, Bucharest, Romania

Project:The airport was extended with a new termi-nal constructed rom 2009 to 2011.

Sika solution:Sika supplied 2000 m2 exterior bonding to the glass and steel facade with Sika® Tack® Panel system, 5000 m2 secondary glass window sealing with Sikasil® IG 25, 5000 m2 structural facade sealing with Sikasil® WS 605 S.

Sika Solutions for Building Facades

Modern airports are increasingly designed with large areas of glass and metal facades. The durability and appearance of curtain walling and other full and partially glazed structures are highly dependent on the use of the right structural glazing adhesives and weather-proof sealants. Sikasil® SG sys-tems are well established structural glazing adhesives which have been used to create many airport facades around the world. Sikasil® SG structural glazing adhesives can accept 30% higher design loads, which allows slimmer profiles and maxi-mum transparency.

For insulated glazing units (IG units), Sika provides Sikasil® SG secondary sealants. For high-performance Argon-filled insulat-ing glass units, Sikasil® IG-25

Typical Applications Sika Solutions Special CharacteristicsStructural glazing and weather sealing

Sikasil® SG / Sikasil® WS A range of silicone based adhesives and sealants for structural bonding and weather resistant sealing of glass and metal facades.

Insulating glass Sikasil® IG 2-component Silicone IG systems are secondary sealants for insulating glass. ETA approved for the use in IG and SG facades.

Panel bonding SikaTack® Panel System consisting of PU adhesives, spacer tapes and surface pre-treatments, for flexible bonding of non-glass facade panels.

Concrete facade joints Sikaflex® AT-Facade High quality 1-component sealant based on Sika’s Advanced Technology for movement joints in facades, also ideal for use on non-porous substrates.

For joints between different single glass elements, between insulating glass units or be-tween glass and metal frames, Sikasil® WS weatherproof seal-ants fulfil all of the require-ments. They have high elasticity and flexibility, excellent adhesion to glass and metal, superior UV light stability, outstanding weath-ering resistance, and full compat-ibility with Sikasil® IG sealants and SG adhesives.

For concrete facades, tight joints are the key to durability and en-ergy saving. Sika Sikaflex® joint sealing solutions for these movement and connection

joints in concrete facades have the proven performance to meet all of the requirements. These in-clude high tear resistance, low modulus even at low tempera-tures, excellent weathering resis-tance, high UV resistance and colour stability, good adhesion to both porous and non-porous sub-strates, over-paintability, etc..

For the glazed balustrades of ex-ternal visitor’s platforms, or inter-nal glazed partitions, the glass panels should be fixed to the floors with minimal stress trans-fer into the glass. With the elastic, damping SikaGlaze® GG system the bottom glass edge is securely embedded in the floor, or in metal U-channels, resulting in uniform stress distribution and minimal stress transfer to the glass.
