Aims & Outcomes:
• Aims: To understand the importance of visual direction within graphic design.
• To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction.
• To use pattern as a tool for the creation of visual direction in design.
• Outcomes: You will create a number of examples of visual direction using design elements. You will develop a design which used rhythm to create visual direction.

VISUAL DIRECTIONElements are arranged in a way that leads the viewer through the design, typically starting with an ‘entry point’.
![Page 4: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
VISUAL HIERARCHYElements are arranged in order of importance in the designs. Such things as size, weight and contrast are used to create a hierarchical structure.
Visual hierarchy naturally creates visual direction and structure in your designs
![Page 5: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
BALANCEElements are balanced visually within the overall space of the design. There are three types of balance:
Symmetrical balance
Asymmetrical balance
Radial balance
![Page 6: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
REPETITIONElements are repeated to make the design seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the design.

PATTERNPattern is the repeating of an object or symbol across the design. Pattern brings depth, texture, and Visual direction to a design

EMPHASISEmphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas.
The area could be different in size, colour, texture, shape, etc.
Closely related to Contrast
![Page 10: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
MOVEMENTMovement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas.
Movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and colour within the work of art.

PROPORTIONProportion relates to the visual size of elements on a page. This could be physical size, or visual weight using such things as Contrast or Emphasis within the design.
Proportions can be changed by such things as size, contrast, colour etc.
![Page 12: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
VARIETYVariety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.
Variety and Repetition can be seen as opposites but you can repeat a variety of objects.
![Page 13: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
UNITYUnity is the feeling of Harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.
![Page 14: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
CONTRASTThe arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.
![Page 15: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
ALIGNMENTElements are arranged on a page in alignment with each other or the edges of the page. Proper alignment in a design means that every element in it is visually connected to another element. Nothing feels out of place or disconnected when alignment has been handled well.”
Creates structure and accuracy within a design

Repetition
• Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
![Page 17: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Pattern
• Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
• Patterns in Photoshop & Illustrator

Design Principles:
• What principle do you see here and how is it working in the design?
• Rhythm is the repetition or alternation of elements, often with defined intervals between them.
• Rhythm can create a sense of movement, and can establish pattern and texture.
• Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement.
• Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing.

One Element, Many Patterns Design Problem 1
1. Devise a single element, such as a dot, diamond, squiggle, or square.
2. Copy and repeat the element in columns or rows to make an overall pattern. Once done create a copy of your work.
3. Vary the spacing of the elements in the rows to create variation. Create a number of different examples.
4. Continue to create new variations by varying the size of the elements, by creating overlapping rows of elements, and changing the color, size, and orientation of elements. Create a number of different examples.
5. Arrange and format your pattern elements to create visual direction in your design. Create a number of different examples.

Random Repeat Design Problem 2
• 1. To create a pattern that appears random but actually repeats, begin by creating a tile. The tile can be any shape that interlocks with other shapes. The tile shown here is square, but you can also work with diamonds, octagons, and irregular forms.
• 2. Anything can happen inside the tile, but the left and right edges and the top and bottom edges, must be repeatable if the same design tile is placed adjacent.
• 3. Test your tile by copying it and linking the copies together. Do the edge elements overlap correctly? Does a random appearance prevail, or do visual "events" begin to form that make the repeating structure obvious?

Bridge Task: Pattern – Wednesday 10th Jan.
• As well as continuing your research into promotional materials you need to do the following:
• Select at least three designs which use pattern in their creation and explain how the pattern is working in the design.
• Relate your reflections to other principles such as visual hierarchy, visual direction, movement and rhythm.
• Discuss how you can use pattern in your own design work.
![Page 33: Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern 06, 2017 · direction within graphic design. •To understand how the principle of pattern is utilised to create visual direction. •To use pattern](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022030413/5a9f36367f8b9a84178c834d/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
