PROGRAM NOTES That mysterious, high-pitched, whirring sound you may have been
hearing for the past few months can now be identified. It is Anton Chekhov spinning in his grave. In RLT's current production, an American adaptation of his naturalistic drama The Cherry Orchard, a unique transformation is taking place.
If you have ever been required to read a Chekhov play, you undoubtedly cried out to all who could hear, "Nothing happens! I don't understand it. It's boring!" Those who could hear more than likely would concur.
Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) is renown as a playwright which overshadows his successes as a physician and a writer of fiction. His atmospheric, seemingly unstructured dramas reject the clearly defined actions and character confrontations of conventional theater and focus on the innermost desires and fears of his characters. He reveals through impulsive asides and monologues which, generally are unacknowledged by the other characters, express lives isolated by obsessive preoccupations, self-accusations, and daydreams.
His major plays (The Three Sisters, The Sea Gull, and Uncle Vanya) were written for production by the young Moscow Art Theatre. His final play, The Cherry Orchard, was completed with great difficulty due to his battle with tuberculosis. In the spring of 1904 he attended its first performance. Its staging by Konstantin Stanislavsky, sentimentalized the characters and emphasized the tragic elements of the work. Chekhov, however, viewed the playas a comedy and insisted that the characters were ludricious in their poses as idealists, liberals, lovers of beauty, and victims of fate. Said Chekhov, "I desired something other. I only wished to tell people honestly. Look at yourselves, see how badly and boringly you behave."
In July of the same year he died. Tolstoy declared of his passing: "Chekhov is an incomparable artist, an artistof life. The worth of his creations consists of this - he is understood and accepted not only by every Russian but by all humanity."
We have taken great liberties in this American adaptation. The action takes place in rural Virginia between April and October, 1992. The essence of the drama is intact. Characters' names and obscure Russian events and issues have been changed to contemporary American ones to make the play more engaging to our audience. We hope it serves to illuminate the play's relevance to our society, depth of character, and most importantly, its humor.
