Kershaw Area Deaths QUEEN ANN HILTON HINSON FLORENCE Queen Ann Hilton Hinson, 83, died peacefully on August 4, 2016, at McLeod Hospice House. Ms. Hinson was born in Lancaster County, South Car- olina, on September 27, 1932, to the late Willie Jackson Hilton and Pearlie Mae Morgan Hilton. She was a 1950 graduate of Flat Creek High School and worked numer- ous jobs, including over two decades at Evans Oil Company in Lancaster, before retiring from Wal- Mart in Florence. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Florence and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Ms. Hinson is sur- vived by her sons, James Roy Hinson (Tonya) of Lancaster, Reggie Hinson (Denise) of Lancast- er, and Richard Hin- son (Paula) of Flo- rence; a brother, W. J. Hilton (Marie) of Rogers, Arkansas; her granddaughters, Caroline Hinson of Columbia and Meredith Hinson of Florence; and sever- al nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her for- mer husband, Roy Hinson, Jr., and her siblings, Carrie Hilton Faulkenberry, Labon Hilton, Leland Hilton, Mildred Hilton Catoe, and Frank Hilton. A funeral service will be held at Waters- Powell Funeral Home in Florence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2016. The family will receive friends following the service. CHRISTINE L. KEENE YOUNG KERSHAW – A service to celebrate the life of Christine L. Keene Young, 57 of Kershaw, will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 16, in the sanctuary of Bethany Baptist Church, Westville. The family will receive friends fol- lowing the service in the church Family Life Center. A private burial will be held in the church cemetery. Mrs. Young died Friday, August 12. Born in South Bend, Indiana, she was a daughter of Bonnie VanDusen Keene and the late Carlton Lauren Keene. She was an employee of the Kershaw News Era, where she loved selling advertise- ments and layout design. Though, born a Yankee, Chris was a southerner at heart. She created a home populated with a family of dear friends. She touched the lives and hearts of many with her smile, songs and f a i t h . She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her mother of Cam- den; a daughter, Lindsay Kirchhoff and her husband Matt; a son, Andrew Potter and his wife Chimere; two grand- children; a sister, Beth Trautman and her husband Shawn Blankenship; 2 nephews and a niece. I walked into the room and said, “What’s going on here?” “I was wearing the hot pink dress,” my daughter cried, “and now she says her dress is hot pink.“ Both girls were wearing bathing suits. This was the first time I had ever seen feminine logic in its developing stages. The two young females were fight- ing because they were wearing the same imaginary dress. Vaughn said based on those interviews, school personnel determined that a crime had not been committed. The Lancaster Chapter of the Nation- al Action Network dis- agrees. The organiza- tion claims that derogatory comments from the students involved were heard by witnesses and not addressed by the school district’s inves- tigation. Vaughn said the reason is that the witnesses involved never mentioned such comments during the district’s investigation. He said any addi- tional information uncovered would be looked into by the school district. “We operated solely on the information that we had at the time. If any other information were to come out, we would listen to that informa- tion and make a deci- sion from there,” he said. The school district’s objectives when resolving incidents of this kind first involve correcting or punish- ing the behavior. Sec- ondly, Vaughn said, the district ensures that all necessary groups, such as law enforcement and par- ents, are notified of the incident. Based on the dis- trict’s policy, Vaughn believes the incident was fully investigated. “There’s no disput- ing that a bad deci- sion was made by a couple of students. Right now, there’s not any different info available that we don’t already have,” he said.
