I am highly pleased to serve as Chair of the Piedmont Community College

Board of Trustees! Most of my adult life, I have had the privilege of being involved with EDUCATION mainly here in Person County - teaching, serving as principal, director of special programs (including the arts) and assistant superintendent of K-5 curriculum and instruction – therefore I feel right at home working with my fellow trustees, the family of educators at Piedmont Community College, and with you, the citizens of Person and Caswell counties. The Board of Trustees has many responsibilities; however, the greatest desire of the Board is to embrace the mission, values, and vision of Piedmont Community

College, providing citizens the opportunity to acquire skills necessary to function in today’s global workforce, to live quality lives, and to contribute to the economic, educational, and cultural success of our communities today and for years to come. We encourage you to read this first edition of “PCC Today” as well as future editions, always remembering to take advantage of the opportunities offered to you. Piedmont Community College is the pride of the counties we serve! The College earned that

With activities in full swing at the Kirby Theater and its adjacent Kirby Gallery and recently-opened Kirby Studios learning spaces, uptown Roxboro is taking on a vibrant

artistic vibe, and people are making their way uptown to take advantage of the cultural opportunities there. Seeing the need for more space, Piedmont Community College has begun a campaign to bring the second floor of the Kirby Theater complex back to life. The “Kirby Rebirth: Upstairs-Uptown” project’s goal is to raise $236,500 to bring the approximately 6,000 square foot space up to minimum code by adding an elevator, a new staircase, and upgraded restrooms. Possible uses for the space include a multipurpose room that could be used for theater productions, business retreats, family reunions, and lecture series or as additional classroom space. Other areas of the newly renovated space could be used for an additional art gallery, instructor offices and an artist-in-residence program and/or studio rentals. PCC kicked off the public phase of the campaign in February with the announcement of a major matching gift of $50,000 from Roxboro Savings Bank. “We feel like this project will greatly benefit our community and our citizens,” said Jane Long, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Roxboro Savings Bank.

Person County PartnershipIn 2010, PCC and Person County formed a partnership to develop the Kirby Theater, Gallery and Studios, working with Person County Recreation, Arts, and Parks and the Arts Council of Person County as administrative partners. Since 2012, that effort has been led by Erin Ganey, director/instructor, Cultural Arts Program. Ganey holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University and a Master of Arts degree from The University of Westminster (England).

relocated from Main Street, Roxboro, to 204 W. Barden St., Roxboro in April. The move to the new facility, owned by Person County Government, was made possible through a partnership between the Person County Commissioners and PCC. The new space, renovated by PCC, offers a warm and inviting atmosphere to EOC clients. The program is funded through a federal TRiO Educational Opportunity Center grant to provide counseling and information services to prospective college students in Person County and 10 other area counties.

The PCC Bookstore on the Person County Campus is growing to better meet the needs of students, faculty, staff and the public. The expansion will include 1,200 square feet of renovated space and 1,500 square feet of new space. It also will feature an adjacent patio of approximately 1,300 square feet, providing a new gateway to the campus. General contractor Legacy Builders of Roxboro expects to complete the project in July.

New cabinetry, tile flooring, paint, and window treatments along with modern work stations provide an attractive and state-of-the-art learning lab for cosmetology students putting the facility on par with the Caswell County Campus Cosmetology lab, which began operating in Fall 2007. Cosmetology was one of the first programs offered by PCC in Person County. Classes were held in uptown Roxboro before moving to the current campus when it opened in 1977.

During 2012, PCC provided Continuing Education opportunities through its various program areas to over 12,300 individuals.

EDUCATION

Business Development and Entrepreneurship Center (BDEC)Served over 1,400 students through its online Ed2go programs; nearly 400 individuals through seminars and workshops; almost 100 small business clients; and helped with three business start-ups resulting in nine new jobs.

Adult Basic Skills, GED© Testing and English as a Second Language (ESL) Awarded 199 high school equivalency credentials at PCC 2012 graduation and enrolled 1,169 students in ABS/ESL/high school equivalency courses. Of the ABS students, 60% entered unsubsidized employment, 54% retained their current employment, 83% completed high school equivalency, and 53% entered postsecondary education.

Occupational ExtensionThe Paramedic Program received initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) in July 2012.

Held training and certification classes for the following: 115 training classes for local law enforcement agencies and the NC Department of Corrections, 1,766 students; 78 Medical Service Education classes, three EMT Basic Initial classes, and one Paramedic Initial class, 857 students; 48 Firefighter certification classes, 622 students; and 25 Health Care classes including 13 Nurse Aide 1 classes, 161 students; one Nurse Aide II class, seven students; and Nurse Aide I Refresher, Monitor Technician, and Medication Technician classes, 247 students.


CONTINUEYOUR DREAMIn January 2012, Human Resources Development (HRD) implemented the Workforce Certification Academy© to better serve the workforce development needs of Person and Caswell counties. PCC funded the project with a $70,000 Rural Community Mobilization Grant from the NC Rural Center. The program offers two primary areas of training: the Certified Production Technician (CPT) and the Certified Logistics Technician (CLT), both offering credentials through the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council. Five course cycles of CPT training were held in 2012 with 77 enrollees who earned the following industry-recognized credentials: 40 Safety, 32 Quality, 22 Production, 33 Maintenance, and 30 Certified Production Technician certificates. Sixty percent of CPT graduates obtained employment averaging $13.65 per hour; 43% of all Workforce Certification Academy© students have obtained employment averaging $12.16 per hour.

The CLT program was implemented in December 2012 with an initial enrollment of 19, 12 of whom received their CLT certification.

At its awards meeting, the NC Rural Center recognized PCC’s Workforce Certification Academy© as the project with the highest overall participant job placement wage rate.

Customized Training for Business and IndustryProvided customized training services for CertainTeed Gypsum, Eaton Corp., Spuntech Industries, Inc., and P&A Industrial Fabrications, serving 200 new employees and 300 existing employees over a three-year period.

Collaborated with the Person County Economic Developer to define, develop, and provide eligible customized training for potential new and expanding industry projects.

Staff Excellence Awards were presented to Randy Reynolds, Director, Business Development and Entrepreneurship Center; Eva Richmond, Secretary, Dean of Technical and Occupational Programs; and Kevin Tyburski, Webmaster/Graphic Designer. A cosmetology scholarship created by the family of Rossie Jeffers Holloway was presented for the first time in 2012. At left, Tiffany Cash, standing behind Mrs. Holloway’s mother with other family members, was named the first recipient of the Rossie Jeffers Holloway Memorial Scholarship Fund for Cosmetology Students. Cash, a wife and mother of two, expects to graduate in May 2013 and hopes to eventually own her own salon.

Holloway, who owned two hair salons, was described as a person who gave her life to others. “It is my job to tell the truth, help out when I can, and make others look and feel good…in that order,” she once said. The scholarship presentation was held during the opening of the newly renovated Cosmetology department on PCC’s Person County Campus.

Matthew Jones, President of PCC’s Student Government Association, is PCC’s nominee for the Gov. Robert W. Scott Leadership Award, presented by the NC Community College System. Jeannette Briggs, a student in PCC’s Computer Programming and Computer Information Technology programs, is PCC’s nominee for the NC Community College System’s Dallas Herring Achievement Award. She is one of 40 community and junior college students nationwide selected to participate in the National Community College Aerospace Scholars project at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL last fall. The PCC Alumni Partnership honored April Duckworth and Carla Johnson with an “Alumnus of the Year” award in early 2012. Duckworth and Johnson completed their Applied Science degree in Human Services Technology in 1995 and 1996 respectively. At the time of the award, the recipients were employed as family therapists-parent educators with the Person County Government Cooperative Extension Office.

Employees at Progress Energy’s Mayo Plant Raise Scholarship Endowment Funds

In less than one year, employees at Progress Energy’s Mayo Plant have raised $11,630 towards a scholarship endowment. The first scholarship was awarded to PCC GED graduate, Johnnetta Hamlett. “I really want to thank the employees at Progress Energy for allowing me to have this opportunity. Without it I would not have been able to return to school. I can’t thank them enough,” said Hamlett who is pursuing a degree in Medical Office Administration at the College.

PCC’s Person and Caswell County Campuses are now more energy efficient as a result of recent improvements. Both campuses have been retrofitted with energy efficient exterior lighting in the parking lots, breezeways, and grounds as well as light sensors and window film. The improvements, funded through two State Energy Grants from the North Carolina State Energy Office, should result in reduced energy costs for the College as well as being environmentally responsible.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges is currently completing its review of Piedmont Community College’s reaccreditation. SACS requires that an institution complete this review process every 10 years. As part of the review, PCC was required to: 1) complete a Compliance Certification document showing in detail that the College is in compliance with SACS Commission on Colleges standards; and 2) develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a major improvement project that addresses student learning and success. A large number of PCC faculty, staff, and students participated in these two reaccreditation efforts.

A team of educators reviewed PCC’s Compliance Certification report off-campus. Another team made an on-site visit on Oct. 2-4, 2012, to further review both the Compliance Certification and the QEP. The College is currently responding to findings from the October visit and expects to receive notice of its reaccreditation status this summer.

PCC selected Quantitative Reasoning for You (QR4U) as the topic for its five-year Quality Enhancement Plan. The purpose of PCC’s QEP is to improve students’ quantitative reasoning skills by implementing mathematics across the curriculum, using problem-solving and real-life applications. QR4U is the slogan to emphasize that quantitative reasoning is a skill that everyone needs in their daily lives. QR4U’s goals are: 1) to implement mathematics across the curriculum, using problem-solving and real-life applications; and 2) to improve students’ quantitative reasoning skills. Professional development activities have begun in preparation for implementing QR4U with students during Fall 2013.

The NC General Assembly passed the Omnibus Higher Education Act on May 10, 1963, creating the Department of Community Colleges by combining 20 industrial education centers, six community colleges, and five extension units.
