Introduction Why You Should Choose High-Quality Professional-Grade

Supplements

Are you wasting money on low-quality health supplements?

Many health conscious consumers are confused about how to choose high quality vitamin, mineral, nutritional and herbal supplements.

How do you choose products of consistently high quality and efficacy?

What factors are really important when it comes to choosing supplements?

When investing in your health, it’s important to select the highest quality professional nutritional supplements, so you can live long and live well. If you’re worried about cancer and other serious

illnesses – or if you’re rebuilding your health and well-being after periods of stress, surgery, chemotherapy, serious injury, or illness – knowing how to buy high-quality supplements make you a smart, savvy, and informed consumer.

In this report, you will learn the most essential questions to ask before making any supplement purchase. When you know how to select superior quality products based on solid information and science, you can be confident your selection is the best and safest safe choice for you and your family.

Don’t waste your money on low-quality products! Choose wisely so you can receive the most benefits from your supplements – and feel revitalized, energized, and healthy.

Sincerely,Dr. Nalini Chilkov, L.Ac., O.M.D.

7 Key Factors to Consider When Purchasing Nutritional Supplements and Herbal Products

1. Quality Control and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

If your objective is to nourish and sustain your health, then the quality of the supplementary products you use matters greatly.

If you’re extremely allergic, chemically sensitive, or immune-compromised, then you absolutely must choose products that are high in quality, purity, and safety.

Without some type of assurance regarding the raw materials used and warehouse practices, you could unintentionally be exposing yourself to harmful toxic elements

such as lead, arsenic, pesticides and potentially carcinogenic solvents – in the very products you take to boost and maintain your health!

Many cheap supplements brands do not accurately portray the contents of what they’re selling on their ingredient labels.

You’d be surprised to discover how common it is among cheaper brands to sell products in which the product inside the bottle does not match the contents on the label. Every pill, capsule, or teaspoon should match the label exactly. For example, if 1 capsule is supposed to contain 50mg, then it should not contain 45mg or 90mg.

When choosing a supplement brand, you ideally want to select a company that is dedicated to maintaining high standards in quality, purity, and safety. Professional grade or “pharmaceutical grade” supplement companies fully disclose everything in their products.

Here are a few “quality control” factors to be aware of:

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

Products must be made in safe, sanitary, well-controlled environments. The manufacturer must monitor all raw materials, all phases of production, and maintain proper storage conditions. Taking these steps indicates that a supplement manufacturer is quality-conscious, and that the supplement will be manufactured with consistent quality from batch to batch.

Contents that Match What’s Listed on the Ingredients Label

Tests have shown that contents of some supplements don’t match what is listed on the product label. Some products contain significantly less or more than the claimed amount of key ingredients. To get the highest value from your purchase, you must be assured that you’re getting the exact dose you expect from a product – in the potency and amounts declared on the label.

If the label says “100mg Vitamin C as ascorbic acid” or “50 mg of Niacin as Nicotinic Acid,” then the manufacturer should be able to produce a document upon request to prove these numbers are accurate for every

Factor/What to Look for: Questions to Ask:Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Has the product been made according

to FDA current “Good Manufacturing Practices” (GMP)? Are safe and sanitary manufacturing processes and well-controlled procedures used?

Contents that Match What’s Listed on the Ingredients Label

Does the product contains the exact ingredients listed on the label, in the declared potency and amounts?

No Harmful Levels of Specified Contaminants

Certificate of Authenticity (CTA) Is a Certificate of Authenticity (CTA) available for the product?

batch. You don’t want the label to just say “Vitamin B6.” You want to know whether it’s Pyridoxine HCl or the more active form, Pyridoxal 5’ Phosphate.

No Harmful Levels of Specified Contaminants

Does the product contain harmful levels of specified contaminants? Some supplements have been shown to contain harmful levels of certain heavy metals (e.g., lead and mercury), pesticides, bacteria, molds, toxins, or other contaminants. At specific levels, these contaminants can pose serious risks to your health.

Certificate of Authenticity (CTA)

A trustworthy company must be able to produce a CTA, a Certificate of Authenticity for every ingredient and every formula it uses in its products. The CTA report shows whether or not there are contaminants such as heavy metals (mercury, lead) or chemical exposures (pesticides) or solvents (hexane) in the product raw materials. Every batch has its own CTA.

When choosing a supplement, you may wish refer to the manufacturer’s website to read and view their quality control policies, product and ingredient disclosures, as well as their manufacturing practices.

Vitamin Supplement Companies are NOT Required to Follow Good Manufacturing Practices!

In the United States, the supplement industry was once largely unregulated and lacking in consistent standards. In recent years, great strides have been made to tighten up the industry with stricter and higher standards. These efforts have been met with both resistance and celebration, depending upon where your values lie.

Although over-regulation can feel like a stranglehold for supplement companies, it’s important for consumers to be able to trust the information on product labels. When it comes to the products we put into or onto our bodies, we need to know the label is accurate, so that we can make informed choices based on reliable information.

If we want to see documentation regarding any product, a manufacturer should be willing to provide that information.

Not all companies meet the high standards required of Good Manufacturing Practices. Those who do receive the GMP seal have proven that they are producing a consistently high quality product – from batch to batch, lot to lot, bottle to bottle, and tablet to tablet. Thus, they can proudly display the GMP seal on their labels and in their promotional materials. As a consumer, when you purchase a supplement containing the GMP label, you can buy with confidence, knowing that the product is well-made.

Good manufacturing practices are VOLUNTARY and not MANDATORY. That is why I, as a health care practitioner, have deep respect for companies that show leadership in this area. I respect supplement companies that adhere to high quality standards, whether they’re required to or not.

2. Pure, Safe Quality Ingredients

The next key question to ask is whether or not the supplement contains pure, safe quality ingredients. Just because a product says “natural” does not mean it is 100% chemical-free.

Read the label!

Avoid products that contain any of the following:

• Artificial flavorings, colorings, dyes, preservatives and chemical additives

• Artificial sweeteners• Aspartame or sucralose (sold as Splenda)• Genetically modified (GMO) ingredients

Artificial Flavorings, Chemicals and Sweeteners

If you have diabetes, pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance are at risk for or have cancer, be aware of the form of sweetening used in any supplement you take.

Why is this so important?

Extensive research shows that having higher levels of blood sugar and insulin (a hormone released in response to eating food with carbohydrates that include sweets, sugars, fruits and starches) is linked to increased incidence, progression, and risk of cancer.

Small amounts of natural sweeteners when ingested with food, fiber, healthy fats, and proteins do not typically cause unusually high spikes in blood sugar or insulin in most people.

Do NOT use products with aspartame (which may be toxic to the brain and nervous system) or sucralose, sold as Splenda (which may be toxic to the liver). Just because a product says “sugar-free” does not make it a safe or healthy choice. Sugar-free could mean it contains Splenda, which is a toxic chlorinated chemical. Although Splenda is promoted to be a safe and natural sugar substitute, it is not.

What About Stevia?

Many people ask about the natural (not artificial) sweetener, Stevia, which is used in many products. Stevia is a subtropical plant that originates in South America. It is also known as sweet leaf or sugar leaf. The leaves of the Stevia plant are up to 30-45 times sweeter than table sugar (sucrose) due to the presence of glycoside phytochemicals stevioside and rebaudiosideglycoside. Stevia is recognized as safe and does not trigger elevations in blood sugar or insulin, making it a good choice for people who are on low-carbohydrate and low-glycemic diets.

Genetically Modified (GMO) Ingredients

Choose companies committed to using only raw, organic materials that are not genetically altered. Many soy products today are made from genetically modified soybeans – so be well informed when using any supplement containing soy based ingredients.

We do not yet know if altering the design of nature will have negative consequences. But common sense tells us to be safe rather than sorry.

The receptors on our cells evolved in a “lock-and-key” relationship with natural molecules.

When we consume GMO foods, it is possible that altered signals and ‘mis-messaging’ will ensue, and that the beautiful orchestra of our biological systems will go from harmony to dissonance. This might be in the form of increased food sensitivities or more autoimmune disease, abnormal hormonal or immune regulation.

As a scientist, I respect the elegant wisdom of nature. It is my experience that if we partner with nature, rather than seek to manipulate and dominate it, we’ll be more likely to make safe and sensible choices, while preserving the ecology of our bodies upon which robust health depends.

3. What Dose are You Getting?

Beware of “Proprietary Blends” that Do Not Disclose Exact Doses

Some companies are more interested in protecting their special formulations than providing straightforward ingredient information to consumers. Out of a fear that someone will copy them, these companies often list all of the ingredients on the product label, but don’t include the exact doses. In this case, you don’t know how much of any given nutrient you’re actually getting.

For example, a company might sell a product that combines CoQ10, Resveratrol, and Querticin as a proprietary blend. This is a great

combinat ion for enhanc ing cel l protection and gene protection promoting an anti-cancer physiology, enhancing energy production, protecting telomeres (which is surmised to retard aging and extend life), and promoting antioxidant protection in the brain and blood vessels. However, it makes a big difference if you’re getting 10mg of CoQ10 or 100mg of CoQ10 per dose.

Caveat: As a health care professional concerned about exact doses, I have contacted companies who label their

products as proprietary (read: private secret) formula. l’ve asked companies to disclose the exact formulation and exact doses which were readily provided to me. I am not sure that this information would be released to the general public or to every health professional inquiry.

I do encourage you to ask. If a company is ethical and wants to keep your business, they should be responsible and provide that information for you. It is my opinion that any company that makes any product ingested or used topically should tell us exactly what we’re getting and how much.

I won’t use products from a company that won’t fully disclose all of the ingredients and exact dosage amounts.

4. Expiration Dates

Are you buying products that are close to the expiration date?

While it may be tempting to shop the internet for the best price, be sure that you know the company from whom you’re purchasing products vital to your health and wellness.

Some discounters do sell high quality products, but they’re often past the “sell date” or about to expire.

Proper Storage

Have the products you’re purchasing been properly stored?

It’s important that your supplier has properly stored all products in a temperature-controlled facility and ships heat-sensitive items with cold packs.

Many nutrients are extremely heat-sensitive and would be damaged by improper storage and shipping. I would not want to use any heat-damaged product that has been stored in a hot garage or warehouse, or shipped without a cold pack in hot weather.

Whether you shop online or in a store, be sure you know the practices and policies of your vendors so that nutritional quality and efficacy are ensured.

5. Are the Products Hypoallergenic? What does “hypoallergenic mean?

The term refers to products and ingredients that will not trigger an allergic reaction, including a delayed food sensitivity. The safest, purest products label the presence or absence of possible allergens.

What to look for:

• If you have a peanut allergy, only purchase products from a company that you know will label their products “manufactured in facility with peanut products.”

• If you’re sensitive to gluten, look for “gluten-free” products or for labels that clearly say, “Does Not Contain Gluten.”

• If you have dairy and milk allergies or sensitivities, look for “dairy-free” products.

If you’re sensitive to soy products, look for “soy-free” products. (Exception: you may still be able use products that contain soy lecithin without problems. This natural phospholipid substance does not typically contain the soy protein that may trigger an allergic reaction or delayed food sensitivity. Always consult your health care provider for guidelines. )

Always look at the product label!

6. What Kind of Capsules are Used?

If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you may wish to avoid supplements made with animal derived gelatin capsules. These may be made from the skin and bones of animals.

Vegan gelatin capsules are derived from plant fibers, such as cellulose. They are a bit harder to digest than gelatin capsules made from animals.

Vegetarian capsules are generally “preferred” by those wishing to avoid animal products for personal or religious reasons. In addition, vegetarian capsules typically comply with religious requirement of Kosher and Hallal dietary guidelines.

Cellulose plant based capsules also meet the requirements of vegetarian and vegan diets.

Soft gel caps are usually a mixture of gelatin and glycerine. Glycerine can be made either from animal fat or from vegetable oil. In the case of capsules, glycerine makes the wall of the capsules flexible instead of rigid and is used to enclose liquids such as Omega 3 EPA DHA fish oils or liquid vitamin or herbal ingredients such as Vitamin E or Liquid Ginseng Concentrate. Soft gel caps are typically easier to swallow than hard gel caps.

7. Quality of Herbal Products

Are you getting the most potent and active form of an herb? Is the correct plant is being used?

A complete plant name is like a person’s first and last name. A complete plant name tells you the exact, precise SPECIES of the plant used. If the label only says “Echinacea” o r “ S k u l l c a p ” ( w h i c h a r e commonly used names of herbs), you don’t really know what you’re getting.

Look for the complete botanical name of the source plant(s) from which the product is made.

For example: If you buy “Eichacea,” does the product contain Echinacea purpura or Echinacea angustifolia? These are two related, but different plants.

If you purchase a “Skullcap” supplement, are you purchasing the species Scutellaria lateriflora, Scutellaria baicalensis or Scutellaria barbata? These are THREE related but distinctly different healing plants with different constituents, healing properties, and uses.

In recent years, both in the United States and China there has been an interest in laboratory research that has been conducted on the effects of Scutellaria barbata on breast cancer cell biology and Scutellaria baicalensis on the biology of colon cancer cell biology. If you just ask for “Skullcap,” you might end up with Scutellaria lateriflora, which has been traditionally used to support normal sleep and relaxation.

All of these plants can be labeled as “Skullcap.” How are you supposed to know what exactly you’re buying? It’s best to use brands you trust and seek the guidance of a professional health care practitioner trained in herbal medicine.

Herbal Products: Are the Plants Organically Grown?

Are your herbal supplements free of chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides?

Does the company disclose where the product was grown, how it was harvested and collected, and how it was processed to preserve its healing and therapeutic properties?

Again, read the label, know who manufactures the product, and visit their website to learn about their policies and practices. Only by doing this will you be able to make educated decisions for you and your family.

Spend Your Money Wisely | Invest in Your Health

Selecting superior quality supplements does indeed make a significant difference in achieving a high level of health, vitality and longevity and in supporting a high quality of life and vibrant well-being – not to mention great peace of mind knowing you’ve truly made intelligent, well-informed, educated choices using products from trusted sources.

At the end of the day, look for trusted reliable brands that are science based, inspire confidence, and exceed industry standards.

From raw material selection through manufacturing, storage and shipping of the finished product, select products from companies that adhere to the strictest of quality control standards.

Every step of the process should be thoroughly documented, controlled and guaranteed to ensure that customers receive consistently potent and effective nutritional and herbal supplements every time.

A Personal Note from Dr. Nalini Chilkov

Having worked in the health care field for over 30 years, I know the supplement industry inside and out. I’ve personally been involved with every facet of the nutritional and herbal supplements world, from manufacturing and distribution, professional and consumer brands to wholesale and retail. For the most part, the average consumer doesn’t really know how to choose a superior quality supplement. They’re subject to consumer advertising and consumer literature, which may be biased, confusing, or contradictory.

Whether you’re purchasing vitamins, minerals, super foods, functional foods, powdered concentrates, protein powders, green drinks, or herbal and botanical products – it is far better to make educated and informed choices based on science and safety than to simply guess or buy supplements based on the lowest price.

Identify brands and manufacturers that have a proven track record of excellence and a commitment to all the principles, practices and values I’ve discussed in this report.

Over the last 30 years, I’ve had the honor, privilege, and great responsibility of advising my own patients, many of whom are or have been seriously ill. For this reason, I’m extremely particular, careful and meticulous when selecting the products that I use personally and recommend professionally.

After reading these guidelines, I hope you will become very particular and careful too!

May you live long and live well.
