Danville Area Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age in its programs and activities. Inquiries may be directed Jill A. Way, Danville, IL 61832-5199, 217-443-8756, or [email protected].

For a number of years now, Executive VP Dave Kietzmann has been advocating for the inclusion of academic deans on the College’s leadership team. “They provide a perspective on teaching and learn-ing—and the faculty viewpoint—that would greatly benefit my colleagues on the Administrative Council.”

EVP Kietzmann’s idea came to fruition this month when President Nacco invoked his dictatorial powers. He unilaterally banned all dissenters, nattering nabobs, and fried food. Then he dissolved the Administrative Council, which received its pink slip on Sept. 3.

The following Monday, on Sept. 9, a new leadership team—the College Cabinet—held its first meeting in the DACC Board room. President Nacco formed the Cabinet by rounding up the usual suspects from the original Administrative Council. Then on the advice of EVP Kietzmann, the president welcomed the College’s three academic deans as well as the director of Adult Education and Middle College to the team. The co-chairs of Governance (the coordinator of CQI and the coordinator of ATD) have also become Cabinet members.

One of the catalysts for this change was a recommendation from the HLC. Says President Nacco, “The HLC’s Institutional Actions Council said we ought to have an academic-assessment officer on the College Cabinet. We had an institutional-assessment officer on the Administrative Council in Bob Mattson, but no academic one. We also didn’t even have a Cabinet.”

So along with changing the name of the Administrative Council to College Cabinet, President Nacco appointed Dean Penny McConnell to the team with the new title of dean of Liberal Arts, Library, and Assessment.

Says EVP Kietzmann, “Dr. McConnell was the logical choice based on her role leading the assessment team along with Dr. (Abby) Hahne and Bob Mattson. And then Dr. Nacco and I thought that rather than having just one academic dean, we might as well bring them all in, including adult education and middle college, since all of them have a great deal to offer to the leadership team.”

Welcome to the Cabinet: Kathy Sturgeon, the dean of Math, Sciences, and Health Professions; Terri Cummings, the dean of Business & Technology; and Laura Williams, with the newly minted title of dean of Adult Education & Middle College.

Migrating to the Cabinet from the Administrative Council are Kerri Thurman, vice president of Operations; Jill Cranmore, VP of Human Resources; Mike Cunningham, VP of Administrative Services; Stacy Ehmen, VP of Student Services; Tammy Betancourt, VP of Finance; College Relations Executive Director Lara Conklin; Chief Diversity Officer (and AVP) Carla Boyd; American Job Center Executive Director (and AVP) Brian Hensgen; Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness & Strategic Planning Bob Mattson; and Foundation Executive Director Tonya Hill.

President Nacco also saw this as an opportunity to raise the profile of the Governance co-chairs by including them on the College Cabinet. “Ryan Wyckoff of CQI and Shanay Wright of ATD oversee college-wide employee committees that play a critical role in supporting the College mission. The inclusion of Governance leadership on the Cabinet is of paramount importance since the chief goal of the Cabinet is for members to share information about what their departments are doing.”

40th Annual DACC College Day DACC will be holding their 40th Annual College Day will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 in the Mary Miller Gymnasium. DACC students should take advantage of this opportunity to meet with representatives. Last year over 55 representatives from 10 different states were on campus from four-year colleges and universities, and technical schools.

The doors will open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 11:00 a.m. Please spread the word!

Note: On Thursday, September 19th, student parking behind Mary Miller Gymnasium will not be available until 11:00 a.m. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause.

A Note from President Nacco: I am writing to extend my personal thanks and appreciation to DACC’s Family Day Committee: Dave Kietzmann, Becky Doss, Brian Hensgen, Kerri Thurman, Tammy Betancourt, Paulina Padjen, Amie Musk, Shanay Wright, Brandice Connor, Stefanie Davis, and Carrie Reed. Through your collective vision, DACC had a banner day on Saturday (Sept. 7). Dozens of DACC colleagues and their families enjoyed the sun-splashed festivities at the American Legion.

Even though I may be leaving someone out (sorry about that!), I also have to commend other key contributors to the day’s success, including Brad Weaver, Brad and Dana Wheeler, Mark Barnes, Rob and Alyssa Doss, Noah Padjen, and Laura Hensgen.

I hope that Family Day continues to be an annual event at DACC. Coming together on such an occasion reminds us as well as our family members that the faculty and staff who work at DACC are a wonderful group of people.

Dr. Stephen NaccoPresident

Cabinet meetings will take place on most Mondays beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding on or before 11:30. In addition, President Nacco will continue meeting with the vice presidents for an hour or so every Wednesday to discuss personnel and confidential issues.

During the week of Board of Trustees meetings, Cabinet meetings will be held on Monday afternoons in an expanded form—with department directors included. “It’ll be similar to expanded administrative council,” says President Nacco, “with updated information on ‘Operation Graduation’ as well as an opportunity for employees to present their ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’ for a review by their peers.”

President Nacco might want to start vetting the presentations beforehand just in case somebody’s BHAG happens to be a military-style coup d'état of their dictator.

Vacancy Filled on SURS BoardMitchell Vogel, a SURS annuitant and former SURS board member, has been selected to fill a vacancy on the SURS Board of Trustees. The vacancy was created when elected annuitant board member John Engstrom resigned after the June 2019 board meeting.

The Illinois Pension Code directs the elected members of the board to fill any unexpired term of a fellow elected trustee by a majority vote.

Vogel was selected from over 30 annuitant application after an extensive interview process. His term expires in July 2021. Vogel is a retired professor from Northeastern Illinois University. He served on the SURS board from 2004 through 2015 and during his time on the board served as president four years, as chair of the Legislative and Corporate Governance Committees, and as a member of the Investment Committee.

The SURS Board of Trustees consists of 11 trustees: • four appointed by the governor• four active participants elected by current SURS

employees• two retired annuitants elected by the retired annuitants

in the SURS system, and • the appointed chairperson of the Illinois Board of

Higher Education who serves as the chairperson of the SURS Board of Trustees. (The current Chairperson is John Atkinson.)
