Wildcat Words Dear Parents and Guardians,

Safety Matters

Springtime is a great time for parents/caregivers to

review their safety plans with children. We all know the

importance of safety belts and bike helmets, but does

your child also know:

1. Their address and have your phone number

memorized?

2. What your house rules are, if left unsupervised?

3. How and when to use 911?

4. Where to go and who to talk to in the event of

an emergency?

Other safety matters that can be part of your spring

cleaning are checking your fire alarm systems,

conducting a family safety drill, and discussing what your

child should do if ever they are confronted with a

situation that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

As a school, Osceola practices safety drills on a monthly

basis, and as a result, we feel prepared to deal with

emergencies should they arise. Emergencies usually

come unexpected, and having a plan is vital to the

health of our school and families. Thank you for being a

partner in assuring the safety for all of our children.

SJCSD ELEMENTARY OLYMPICS

Linking academics and CHARACTER COUNTS! through

athletic competition

Who: Attendees include SJCSD school-selected student

representatives, parents, teachers, administrators, and

community members. (Aside from school-based selection

criteria, qualifying students must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher

and demonstrate attributes of character counts).

What: This is a student-centered event highlighting physical

education and Character Counts! Participants will compete in

district elementary track and field events.

When: April 13, 2016 from 3:30 pm-7:30 pm

Where: The event will take place at St. Augustine High School.

Details: Parking for the event will be marked with signage. For

safety, only students, coaches, and county-selected event

volunteers will be allowed on the track and field. Students will

be recognized following each event. Elementary school

physical education (P.E.) teachers will serve as the school

team leader for student teams. No cleats or spikes please.

AR News Our students have worked very hard this year reading and earning AR

points. As the end of the year approaches we want to remind you

about our AR pool/movie reward. The cut-off date for earning points

will be Friday, April 22. This reward system should reflect a year-

long effort and not a two week push at the end. First grade: 30

points, Second grade: 50 points, Third grade: 65 points, Fourth grade:

80 points, and Fifth grade: 100 points. In addition, their

comprehension test scores must average 80%. Thank you for

encouraging your child to read.

PTO News and Spirit Night Reminder Osceola’s PTO is a nonprofit Parent/Teacher Organization whose membership includes all parents, legal guardians and staff at Osceola Elementary School. The PTO's mission is to promote open communication and understanding between parents and staff. The PTO sponsors assistance to teachers in the classroom setting, holds fund-raisers for supplemental educational materials and experiences, supports school and family social interaction, and provides a non-biased forum for sharing information on issues that impact our children. Manner of the Week: This week we will concentrate on manners at the table which includes: using utensils properly, using your fingers to eat finger food only, putting your napkin on your lap, asking politely for things out of reach rather than reaching for them, and pleasant conversation at the table.

2016-2017 Kindergarten Pre-Registration Osceola Elementary will hold pre-registration for children entering Kindergarten on the following dates: Monday, May 9 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. To be eligible for public kindergarten in St. Johns County, children must be 5 years old on or before September 1st and must reside in St. Johns County. Parents must register children at the school where they are zoned for the 2016-2017 school year. Please provide the following documentation to complete the registration process:

Child’s certified birth certificate

Current Physical (dated within one year of the start of school)

Florida Immunization Record (680 Form)

Proof of Residency. The required proof of residency

documentation has changed. Please visit

Registering Parent’s Driver’s License or ID Card

Parents are encouraged to register during the designated dates above so that schools can adequately prepare for the new school year.

VPK Registration Along with Kindergarten Pre-Registration, parents may also register students for VPK. Children must be 4 years old on or before September 1st to qualify. In order to register for VPK, you must have completed the VPK eligibility process through Episcopal Children’s Service (ECS), and have a Child Eligibility registration that are listed above. Please visit Osceola’s website for additional information and to schedule

your registration appointment.

FSA Testing Testing for 4th grade will resume on Monday, April 11th and 5th grade will start on Friday, April 15th. Please observe the following Testing Reminders.

Electronic Devices Policy—If students are found with ANY electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones and smartphones, during testing OR during breaks, their tests will be invalidated. The best practice would be for students to leave devices at home on the day of testing. Discussing Test Content after Testing—The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they affirm the Testing Rules Acknowledgment reads, “Because the content in all statewide assessments is secure, you may not discuss or reveal details about the writing prompt or passages after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online, for example, on websites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.” “Discussing” test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to blogs or social media websites, etc. While students may not share information about secure test content after testing, this policy is not intended to prevent students from discussing their testing experiences with their parents/families. Osceola SAC Team News

The Osceola SAC Team (School Advisory Committee) is made up of our

principal, Mrs. Waldrop along with a group of teachers, parents, support

staff and community members. The SAC is responsible for decisions

related to the implementation of Osceola’s School Improvement Plan. SAC

also discusses important items related to student achievement.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the ongoing improvement at

Osceola, please join us at our last SAC meeting to be held on Monday,

May 2nd at 3:30 pm. The Principal from Murray Middle School, Mr.

Schwarm, will be our guest speaker. Parents of upcoming 6th grade students

are encouraged to attend in order to learn important information about

the transition to Middle School. Free childcare is provided.
