what IS IT?Classical Conditioning is a form of
behavior modification. A subject learns to respond in a desired manner to a once neutral stimulus. This stimulus is repeatedly presented along side an unconditioned stimulus that elicits the desired response, and soon enough, the neutral stimulus conducts the same response as the unconditioned.

Ivan Pavlov’s Life(1849-1936)
Ivan was born in Ryazan, Russia. He was the son of Peter Dmitrievich Pavlov, the village priest. He discovered psychology was his favorite subject after he wrote his first ever paper on Pancreatic Nerves. Ivan won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1904. He was elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1907, and given the Honorary doctorate at Cambridge University in 1912. As you see, he had many accomplishments during his life of 89 years.

Pavlov wanted to learn about gastric function of dogs, so he rerouted his Kanine’s salivary glands to the outside of their cheeks. He noticed salivation occurring before the food was delivered, and became interested in what he later termed “psychic secretion.”

• Classical Conditioning is present when a song reminds you of a place or person. The song has conditioned you to think about that particular subject, even though you do not realize it!
• Jingles and advertisements allow you to think of a company’s product when you hear it’s name, slogan or jingle. This conditioning on your brain is done in a way that you don’t realize it’s happening!
• When the dismissal bell rings, you are aware it’s time to leave because you learn to become accustom to leaving at the sound of a bell.
