Caesar spends his evenings, far from his former junkyard days, relaxing on the couch and watching TV with his new mom and dad. Purple’sHappy New LifePurple’s APL story had a very sad beginning. Our Humane Investigations Department (our “Animal Cops”) received a call reporting an abandoned dog, alone in a junkyard, its only shelter in old cars surrounded by broken glass. When our officer arrived, Purple, a 3-year-old Shar-Pei mix, was very thin and scared and was wearing a very tight collar around his neck that was on its

way to becoming embedded, but he was as sweet as could be. Before he knew it, Purple was on his way to the APL, leaving his life as a junkyard dog behind.

Once at the APL, Purple got a good meal, lots of attention, and much needed medical care. His eyelids

were turned in causing his eyelashes to irritate his eyes, but our APL veterinarians were able to correct that with surgery. With this handsome guy ready for his new life, we decided to send him on an important “field trip” to WKYC’s “Good Company” on Channel 3. While Amy Hafner told his story, Purple, who was dressed to the “nines” in his colorful bandanna, turned on the charm.

Luckily for Purple, Sharon Florio saw the story. She and her family had just

lost their Shar-Pei mix, Sidney, at the age of 14. Sharon called her husband, crying while telling Purple’s story. They came right on down and met Purple with their daughter-in-law and two grandsons. Purple loved the children, loved the adults, and the deal was sealed.

Today Purple, renamed Caesar, is a beloved member of the Florio family. He loves his toys and carries them happily around the house. Caesar spends his evenings, far from his former junkyard days, relaxing on the couch and watching TV with his new mom and dad. In fact, Caesar’s dad has abandoned his “dogs sleep in the laundry room!” rule. Caesar’s loving mom reports, “I love waking up in the morning and seeing his wrinkled face next to mine, all wrapped up in his long criss-crossed legs! We love him so!”

Roo’s News

Executive Director Letter

Sharon Harveyand Roo

I like the number ten, and as this year just happens to be 2010 and the start of a new decade, I’d like to highlight ten incredible accomplishments that have allowed the Cleveland APL to better serve animals in our community:

10. With the help of an estate gift from Helen King Brydle, the APL’s old shelter was renovated, allowing us to provide state-of-the-art sheltering for homeless animals in a welcoming, customer-friendly environment for our clients;

9. With a grant from the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust, we started our dog transfer program, through which we have worked collaboratively with overcrowded shelters where dogs were facing euthanasia to bring them to the Cleveland APL for adoption; together we have saved the lives of 3,600 dogs over three years;

8. We started the Second Chance Program, allowing us to provide medical and surgical care for sick and injured animals who may not have received treatment in the past;

7. We ramped up our volunteer program and now have hundreds of amazing volunteers and foster families who, in 2009 alone, logged more than 55,000 hours as members of our APL team;

6. In 2009, we saved nearly 6,000 lives through a combination of creating great animal-adopter matches using our customer-friendly adoption process, by taking our fabulous animals on the road for Cats on Tour adoption events and partnering with PETCO, PetSmart, and Pet Supermarket stores for offsite cat, dog, and small mammal adoption events, and

finally, by working collaboratively with colleagues from other rescue groups to get animals whose needs aren’t best met in our shelter environment placed through their organizations;

5. With start-up grants from the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, the ASPCA, PetSmart Charities, the Ferry Family Foundation, and Build-a-Bear Foundation, we opened our Animal Welfare Spay/Neuter Clinic, where 5,514 free-roaming cats and 2,382 homeless animals from other shelters and rescue groups have been sterilized since February 2008;

4. In 2009, we investigated nearly 1,500 reports of animal cruelty throughout Cuyahoga County and rescued 528 animals from cruelty or neglect;

3. In 2009 alone, we sterilized more than 10,000 homeless animals;

2. In 2009 alone, we assisted more than 15,000 animals through our admissions, adoptions, humane investigations, dog transfer, and spay/neuter programs;

AND, last but not least … 1. We committed to keeping every healthy, friendly animal as long as it takes to find them a new home … no time limits … and we’ve SUCCEEDED!

Thank you all for being a part of every happy ending the Cleveland APL has created for the animals we are so very privileged to assist.

Making a Difference

The Cleveland APL Animal Welfare Clinic (AWC) is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic that provides high-quality, affordable surgery to other animal welfare groups, rescue groups, animal shelters, and feral cat caregivers. The goal of this clinic is to increase the number of animals in our region that are sterilized prior to adoption and decrease the number of homeless, free-roaming cats living on the streets.

In 2009, a total of 10,119 spay and neuter surgeries were performed in-house at the Cleveland APL. Of that number, 4,217 were Cleveland APL shelter animals that were sterilized before adoption. The Cleveland APL Animal Welfare Clinic performed 5,902 surgeries—4,359 were feral or homeless cats done through the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program and

1,543 were from other rescue groups and shelters.

In addition, a total of 223 animals were spayed or neutered through the PetFix Mobile Clinic. PetFix is a nonprofit mobile spay/neuter clinic that assists in reducing pet overpopulation by making spay/neuter surgeries affordable and accessible to low-income pet guardians, feral cat caregivers, and shelters and rescues in Northeast Ohio. PetFix provides its service once a month at the Cleveland APL.

The Cleveland Animal Protective League lovingly cares for thousands of homeless, injured and abused animals each year. For some, their cage at the APL, complete with a warm bed, toys, plenty of food and water, and lots of TLC, is the only “home” they have ever known. For others, it’s a temporary home until

they find the love of another family. For all of them, it’s the reason they’re getting a second chance. Our annual cage sponsors bring hope and comfort to our animals while they

wait for their future mom or dad to adopt them and take them home—permanently. We ask that you help us to provide all of the care and love

they need while they are with us by becoming a cage sponsor.

Your cage sponsorship will be recognized with a plaque on a cage in our cat, dog or small mammal adoption center areas. You may choose to make your cage sponsorship in honor or in memory of a special pet or person or you may choose to advertise your business. Cage sponsorships are renewable every year.

At the Cleveland Animal Protective League, healthy, friendly animals stay with us until they are adopted. We all know a cage in a shelter is not a permanent home, but with your cage sponsorship, we can make it a temporary home away from home until they have one of their own by providing all the care that is needed—and that they so rightfully deserve.

For cage sponsorship opportunities please see below.
