PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - PASTOR KEN HARRIS Our first quarter of the 2020-2021 school term is now history. While it has been a very successful time in respect to containing COVID-19 and providing a quality education from a Christian perspective, it would be an understatement to say that it has not been without its challenges. Every single person who serves at UGCS has been asked to go above and beyond the call of duty. I trust that it has not gone unnoticed by the families we serve. Please pray for our personnel and encourage them whenever you have an opportunity to do so. Without them we could not exist. We will be kicking off our Fall Fundraiser on Thursday, November 19. This year our fundraising efforts are more crucial than ever due to the considerable cost of implementing our COVID-19 policies and protocols, adding additional faculty and staff, continually rising operating expenses, and necessary facility improvements. A recent publication revealed that among the leading Christian and private schools in the area, Union Grove Christian School tuition and fees were the lowest in the Triad. This is intentional since we strive to keep tuition as low as possible to make a quality, accredited Christian education as affordable as possible. Our fundraising needs to be intentional since our tuition and fees are not sufficient to meet our annual budget. Without fundraising and the considerable contributions of Union Grove Baptist Church, we would need to increase our tuition and fees significantly. Therefore, I am asking every family to do your best to participate in our fundraising efforts. If you choose not to do so, I would like to ask you to consider making a comparable donation instead. While we were told to expect a less successful World’s Finest Chocolate Fundraiser due to COVID-19, please help us by participating or by donating. 100% of cash donations go to UGCS and are tax-deductible. Everyone knows that communication is vital and that it is two-sided. We, along with our faculty, are attempting to communicate with you. Please be sure to read all the communication you receive from the administration and teachers and reply as promptly as possible when it is requested. Our first quarter of the 2020-2021 school term is now history. While it has been a very successful time in respect to containing COVID-19 and providing a quality education from a Christian perspective, it would be an understatement to say that it has not been without its challenges. • UGCS Fall Sports Recap & Special Recognition

The 2020 Fall Sports season at Union Grove was a memorable one. Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the uncertainty of sports even being played drove the headlines up to mere days before seasons were to start. Ever-changing policies, schedules, potential shutdowns, and even teams being in place were all in question. Nevertheless, when the season did start, Union Grove made its presence felt immediately in both soccer and volleyball.

In preparing for the season, varsity volleyball had several questions to resolve. Who would replace the graduated seniors? How would new coach Holly Sharp implement her style of play? With a blend of seniors Katelyn Rackard, Faith Hauser, and Madison Gentle leading, the Lady Patriots immediately made a statement to the league, running out to a 12-match win streak, dropping only 4 sets total along the way. UGCS lost in early October but the team regrouped and steamrolled to a Carolina Christian Conference Championship one week later. Coach Sharp won the Conference Coach of the Year award and UGCS set their focus on the State 2A Tournament.

A unique set of challenges occurred in the Quarterfinals Round of the State Tournament as four players on the team were sidelined due to being under quarantine for being exposed to the Coronavirus. None of the players ever tested positive or showed symptoms, but due to policy, were unavailable for the tournament run. In addition, UGCS was slotted to face off against the seven-time defending state champion Wilmington Christian Patriots. Undaunted, the Lady Patriots bent but did not break and won in four sets. The team was then faced with traveling to face the #1 seed from the East Region and newcomers to the State conference, Liberty Christian. Again, the Lady Patriots were not to be denied and won in four sets to move to the State Finals. In what turned out to be an exhaustive match for players and all of those watching in person and via livestream, the Lady Patriots became State Champions in a 5-set thriller over Wilson Christian. The state championship was the school’s first since 2002. Ironically, Coach Sharp was a player on the last state championship team and now got to experience the win with the newly crowned team as a coach. The Lady Patriots finished at 20 and 1 and won both conference and state tournaments!

For the men’s soccer team, there were plenty of holes to fill in the starting eleven. Losses to graduation of several seniors, including an All-State performer and another All-Region selection from the prior year, the team had to have other leaders step up. Two seniors on the team, Tanner Sizemore and Tyler Knuth-Winterfeldt were tasked with leading a talented, but youthful squad. Lofty goals were in sight, but uncertainty was still present. Out of the gate, UGCS served notice to other teams, winning their first five matches by scoring a total of 36 goals to only allowing 8. Unfortunately, due to some unlucky bounces and turn of events, UGCS dropped their first and only match of the regular season to rival and defending state champion Gospel Light 3 to 2. Having led most of the entire match, UGCS surrendered two second-half goals, including the game winner in the final 30 seconds. Discouraged by the loss, but emboldened by how they played overall, UGCS recovered to win the next eleven matches, including a revenge win against Gospel Light and a statement win over Alamance, another heated rival. The streak included a re-taking of the Conference Championship that was lost the year prior, with a dominant 8 to 0 win over Matthews Christian. With the payoff of the one-loss regular season meaning two home games in the NCCSA 2A State Tournament, UGCS dispatched the visiting East region teams Hilltop Christian and Liberty Christian to advance to the State tournament finals. In what turned out to be a defensive battle for the championship game, UGCS fell short to Wilson Christian. After a remarkable blocked penalty kick by Patriot keeper Hayden Michalak, Wilson Christian was able to punch in the rebound for the only score of the game. Unfortunately, this meant Wilson Christian ended the Patriots season yet again, with the prior two instances coming in the state quarterfinals in 2018 and 2019. The Patriots ended the season 16 and 2, and Coach Brian Sizemore was denied his 99th career win. The sixteen wins were the most by a Brian Sizemore-led squad and the 2021 graduating class ended their careers with 54 total soccer wins over a four-year period.

The Union Grove Middle School Athletics Program took another huge leap in the fall sports season. Both the volleyball and soccer teams competed for the conference championship and came up just a little short.

The volleyball team, with first year coach Rachael Grogan, had some very good wins against strong teams like Burlington Christian and Triad Baptist. They battled a solid Salem Baptist team during the regular season and lost to them in the finals. This year the volleyball team was able to see a few returning players step up and fill some much needed leadership roles.

The soccer team also had monumental success against Triad Baptist and Salem Baptist but could not surmount the strength of Burlington Christian throughout the season. The team played a very strong championship game against Burlington and held them to the fewest goals all year, however, they ended up just short of the championship.

We look forward to more growth in our middle school program in the future.

  • This year, the Union Grove Cross Country team found itself in a unique position. It not only had to replace a two-time State Runner-Up in Chris Grogan but also its long-time coach, Mr. Calley. The first step was to secure a coach that had a love for kids and a love for running. The amazing acquisition was solidified with the selection of first time coach, Grace Baugh. Baugh and her assistant coaches, Art & Amy Herns, were able to not only have a season training up new

runners and strengthening returning runners but to have a very successful season.

Union Grove hosted its Invitational Meet with 12 schools and 160 runners represented. Brad Wilkins finished in the top 10 in the boys’ race, and Sarah Brewster finished in first place in the girls’ race. Several runners suffered injuries that impacted the season but nothing impacted the season greater than the COVID-19 pandemic. Races were limited but by the grace of God, Union Grove was able to compete in a good number of races.

The varsity team wrapped up the season with a good showing in the 5K race at the NCCSA State Meet on October 29 with Brad Wilkins finishing third overall in the boys’ race with a time of 19:48. Sarah Brewster finished third overall in the girls’ race with a time of 24:10.

The middle school team finished strong at the State meet as well. In the 2.5 mile race, Addyson James clocked in at 20:09, Micah Ellis at 16:13 and Andrew Wilkins at 16:29. The middle school team finished third overall.

We look forward to what this group of young runners will do in the years to come.
