It is a three-day festival which is

the end of the 30 days’ Ramadan

Fasting.

Many people wake up early on

the first day of the Ramadan

Feast. They put on their best

clothes, called ‘Bayramlık’

which they often buy

specifically for the occasion.

other name in Turkey called

The Candy Feast

On this day, people have a large

breakfast. This symbolizes the end of

the fasting period.

During Ramadan, people wake up before

sunrise and eat before the ezan(muslim

call to prayer). When the morning call to

prayer begins they stop eating and their

fasting begins.

People fast all day

until the sunset

call to prayer.

Then, with the

ezan they break

their fasting

especially with a

date or water.

On the day before the first

day of Muslims’ feasts

people go to graves and

pray for the dead. They

read The Quran and deliver

candies to the children.

On the first day of the

Ramadan feast , men go to

mosques and pray to Allah .

It is customary to visit one's

relatives, especially older ones, and kiss

their hand as a sign of respect. Children

go door-to-door, kissing hands of the

grown-ups and receiving sweets and

small amounts of money in return.

It is the most important religious festival

of the year and a four day holiday in

Turkey.

According to Islamic rules, every Muslim

who is wealthy enough must sacrifice a

farm animal for God. The meat from the

animal is then shared – one third saved for

the household, one third shared between

friends and neighbours and the final third

given to the poor.

Many shops, banks and businesses may be

closed for the duration of the festival.

Supermarkets usually remain open, but on

particular hours. Travel is also hectic at this

time, as people visit friends and relatives to

celebrate.

People give one third of the meat to

the poor.

Easter is celebrated every year in

spring.

Before this festival Assyrians fast

for 50 days according to the rules of

the church.

During this time Assyrians do not

use any animal food. They do not

eat anything from morning until

night. This feast lasts for 3 days.

On Easter’s first day Assyrians in

Midyat, point eggs, children go door-to-

door and people give them candies and

easter eggs. They go to church and pray

from 5 to 9.

On the second day, they go to

Assyrian graves and play with

their easter eggs. The game rule is

that if someone breaks your egg

your egg will be his.
