Book Background “Thunder Cake” is a sweet story about how a little girl’s grandmother helped her overcome her fear of thunderstorms by making Thunder Cake.

The book is written at a 3.5 grade level equivalent, so it would be suitable as an independent book choice for readers who’ve reached that level. Obviously, you could use it in your guided reading groups for children on the appropriate instructional reading level, as well. It also makes a fantastic read aloud, with many opportunities for dramatic interpretation of the onomatopoeia contained within the text.

This FREEBIE is part of a larger product in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. It’s a product that I created that contains 18 CCSS-aligned activities for each of the 6 levels of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. I originally created these Bloom’s Comprehension Toolkits (pictured below) as a way to meet the needs of students in my gifted kindergarten class who were reading above grade level. Finding fun, engaging activities that increased in complexity of thinking skills, but were still appropriate for my youngest students was NOT easy, so of course, I just made some up myself. If you find this character traits activity valuable, I hope you’ll consider checking out my other Bloom’s resources. You can click the pictures below to head to learn more. Be sure to “follow” my store so you’ll get updates about my latest products and sales!

PatriciaHello my name is:

Sometimes when we read, authors tell us things about the characters with their words. They say things like, “She was tall with red hair that reached down to the middle of her back;” or they may say, “He was the laziest man in the whole wide world.” Other times, though, we have infer what a character is like, based on things they SAY, things they DO, or how they act. Today, your job is to infer Patricia’s character traits. Look back in the text and find clues that will tell you about what Patricia is like as a person.

My Inferences about Patricia’s Character Traits

Answer Key

hiding under the bed

she grabbed her grandma

I was scared as we walked down the path

from the farmhouse…

she thought she was brave

“Thunder Cake? I stammered…”

she gathered the ingredients

…I was scared.

“I’m not brave, grandma. Remember, I was under the bed?”

From that time on, I never feared the voice of thunder

again.

I infer that Patricia was a scaredy cat in the beginning of the story. At the end of the story though, I infer that Patricia was brave, because she said she wasn’t afraid of

thunder anymore.

***Please note that these answers are not all-inclusive. Your student may find other things in the story to record. What is more important is that they draw logical conclusions about the character,

based on text evidence.***
