WORKSHOP A:

08:30 – 12:00 THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF WORKPLACE ASSESSMENT

COURSE DIRECTOR: Dr Paul Barach, Guest Professor, School of Medicine, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway

Course description:

The safety, reliability, and stability of the clinical workplace are continuously challenged. The public is demanding that assessment of professional competence and safe performance make significant progress in ensuring the public is treated by safe and reliable providers. Current developments are concentrated at the top of Miller’s pyramid: the ‘does’ level, while assessment at the lower layers, directed at (factual) knowledge, application of knowledge and demonstration of skills has a longer history and might even be qualified as ‘established’ assessment technology. Assessment at the top (‘does’) level is predominantly assessment in the workplace and is critical to achieving reliable and safe outcomes. We will explore optimal methods for exploring workplace performance, and make a case for investing in ‘work domain analysis’ to better understand how health teams function reliably within the wider healthcare organisation. We will review methods, tools and regulatory frameworks designed to more reliably assess clinical work.

Course objectives:

• Explore the principles of clinician assessment • Determine programmatic assessment that

relies on a systems approach to assessment underpinned by empirically grounded theory

• Identify a work domain analysis approach that can greatly enhance the engagement and awareness of clinicians

• Describe a suite of methods to diagnose work place non-technical skills as they relate to process and outcomes.

• Appreciate the importance, strengths and limits of a mixed methods approach to better understand the context of clinical work.

Key topics:

Assessment of professional competence, work place performance, expertise, experiential learning, team work assessment

WORKSHOP B:

13:00 – 17:30 CERTIFICATE LEAN HEALTHCARE: WHITE BELT COURSE

COURSE DIRECTORS: Dr Samer Ellahham, Chief Quality Officer, Senior Consultant, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Louis Brackel, Managing Partner, LeanResults, Co-Efficient Management Consulting, Utrecht, The Netherlands

Course description:

Successful implementation of Lean thinking improves quality, patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction and lowers cost. Lean management leads to a substantial improvement of performance.Lean was developed by the founder of Toyota, Sakichi Toyoda, and head of engineering Taiichi Ohno. Toyota was able to improve performance in all respects through the Lean philosophy and became one of the largest and most successful companies in the world.

Implementing Lean management requires profiled training and professional facilitation. In general it requires different thinking and change management. For successful implementation of Lean, it is crucial to have support from both the management and the employees.

Course objectives:

• Define Lean principles, patient expectations, value vs. non-value

• Describe the eight types of waste• Describe traditional vs. Lean improvement• Describe the steps to become a Lean Healthcare

Enterprise• Describe the benefits of becoming a Lean

Healthcare Enterprise• Define challenges within your own organisation• Describe outline of Certified Lean Black Belt for a

healthcare programme

Key topics:

Basics of Lean, Certified Lean Black Belt for a healthcare programme, Lean Healthcare Enterprise
